マルコの福音書 4章 35~41節
35 さてその日、夕方になって、イエスは弟子たちに「向こう岸へ渡ろう」と言われた。
36 そこで弟子たちは群衆を後に残して、イエスを舟に乗せたままお連れした。ほかの舟も一緒に行った。
37 すると、激しい突風が起こって波が舟の中にまで入り、舟は水でいっぱいになった。
38 ところがイエスは、船尾で枕をして眠っておられた。弟子たちはイエスを起こして、「先生。私たちが死んでも、かまわないのですか」と言った。
39 イエスは起き上がって風を叱りつけ、湖に「黙れ、静まれ」と言われた。すると風はやみ、すっかり凪になった。
40 イエスは彼らに言われた。「どうして怖がるのですか。まだ信仰がないのですか。」
41 彼らは非常に恐れて、互いに言った。「風や湖までが言うことを聞くとは、いったいこの方はどなたなのだろうか。」
背景
イエスはさまざまな状況においてその力を見せました。これまで、彼はその神聖な権威を
(1) 教えることにおいて（多くの人々が彼の卓越した教えに驚きました）。
(2) 癒しと悪霊を追い出すことにおいて。そして
(3) 罪を赦すことにおいて、示してきました。これがマルコによる福音書2章から3章で私たちが目にしたことです。そしてマルコによる福音書4章から5章では、マルコはイエスの力と権威が全く新しいレベルにあることを示す4つの奇跡を示しています。イエスは自然の力に対するその力を見せるのです。そして、今日の聖書の箇所は最初の奇跡です。

イエスは一日中、大勢の群衆に教えて語ることで忙しくしていました。それで、一日の終わり、夕方になった時、イエスは弟子たちに言いました、「向こう岸へ渡ろう」。彼は南東の岸に行くことを意味していました。イエスは弟子たちに異邦人の地域へ移動するように言ったのです。
私は、おそらくイエスは教えることで極度に疲れていたのだろうと思います。ですから、彼は群衆から離れて休む時間を求めていたのでしょう。
それで彼らは出発しました。彼ら、つまり弟子たちとイエスは、一緒に舟に乗りました。舟の大きさはわかりません。しかし、彼ら全員（イエスと弟子たち）が一緒に入れる舟でした。
37 すると、激しい突風が起こって波が舟の中にまで入り、舟は水でいっぱいになった。
一つの重要な観察は、イエスは良い休養の時間を得るに値していたのに、嵐が起こったということです。お分かりでしょうか？ですから、もしそれがイエスに起こったのであれば、私にも起こり得ると、そして起こるだろうと考えるべきです。そうです、あなたが安らぎの場所や時間に向かって幸せに進んでいて、それに値すると思っている時でも、嵐は起こるかもしれません。驚かないでください。いらいらしないでください。それは悪いことではありません。今日の聖書の箇所を学ぶことで、なぜそれが悪いことではないのかを学びましょう。
ガリラヤ湖はあなたが思っているよりもかなり大きいです。そして、ガリラヤ湖は危険なことがあります。それは四方を険しい丘に囲まれています。丘からの冷たい空気が湖の盆地にある暖かい空気と衝突し、突然で予期せぬ嵐を生み出します。
そして、今日の聖書の箇所で起こった嵐は小さなものではありませんでした。それは大きくて激しいものでした。真夜中でした。真っ暗で、光はありませんでした。波が舟に打ちつけていました。舟は浸水し、海の中で壊れて沈みそうになっていました。それは本当に恐ろしい状況です！
しかし、最も驚くべきことは、イエスが「枕をして眠って」いたことです（38節）。どうして彼は眠っていたのでしょうか？なぜ嵐の真っただ中の舟の中で眠っていたのでしょうか？おそらく、イエスは嵐が起こるずっと前に眠りに落ちていて、嵐が始まっても起きなかったのでしょう。イエスは長時間の教える奉仕の後、極度に疲れ果てていました。もちろん、彼は神ですが、同時に、完全に人間でもありました。イエスは私たちが持っているすべての身体的な限界と弱さを抱えて生きていました。
イエスが眠っているのを見てショックを受けた弟子たちは、彼を起こし、叫びました、「先生。私たちが死んでも、かまわないのですか」。私たちが溺れているのを、何とも思わないのですか。
もちろん、彼らの叫びは助けを求める必死の叫びでした。しかし同時に、それは非難でもありました。彼らはイエスにこう言っていたのです、「私たちはあなたに従いました。湖の向こう岸へ行こうと言ったのはあなたでした。私たちはあなたを助け、支えました。私たちはここで死ぬに値しません！」。
すると、絶対に驚くべきことが起こりました。39節 イエスは起き上がって風を叱りつけ、湖に「黙れ、静まれ」と言われた。すると風はやみ、すっかり凪になった。
イエスは風を叱りつけました。そして、湖を静めました。そして風も湖も従いました。そして「すっかり凪になった」のです（39節）。
この瞬間、弟子たちが受けた衝撃を想像できますか？彼らの衝撃は、彼らが持っていた旧約聖書の知識と関連していました。旧約聖書の多くの箇所で、神は創造主として描かれています。それは、被造物（全宇宙と自然）が神のしもべであり、彼の命令に従うことを意味します。（例：詩篇89:8-9 「万軍の神、主よ。主のように力ある者はだれがいるでしょう。…あなたは高ぶる海の勢いを治め、荒れ狂う波を静められます。」）ですから、弟子たちは、神だけが自然に命じることができると知っていました。神だけが波と風に命じることができるのです。そして、疲れのために眠っていた彼らの先生が目を覚まし、風と波を叱りつけ、それらが従ったのです！
ですから、結論は一つしかありませんでした。イエスは神でした！彼らの先生は神ご自身でした。波と風を静めることによって、イエスはその「自然に対する神聖な権威」を明確に示しました（M. Strauss）。そして彼は弟子たちの方を向いて言いました。40節「どうして怖がるのですか。まだ信仰がないのですか。」。
イエスは海を叱りつけ（39節）、40節では、二つの質問で弟子たちを叱りつけました。
Q1は彼らの恐れについてでした。「なぜそんなに怖がるのですか」。
Q2は彼らの信仰の欠如についてでした。「まだ信仰がないのですか」。
私たちは、恐れと信仰の欠如がしばしば一緒になることを知っています。私たちが恐れるとき、私たちは信仰を失います。私たちの信仰が弱いとき、私たちは恐れます。そして特に彼らの信仰について、イエスは非常に直接的な質問をしています。「まだ信仰がないのですか」。イエスが「まだ」と言ったとき、彼はこう言っていたのです。「あなたは私のすべての癒し、汚れた霊の追い出し、教え、そして罪の赦しを見てきたのに、どうしてまだ私を信頼しないのか？」。あなたはすべてを見てきたのに、なぜまだ信仰が欠けていて、私が誰であるかを知ることができないのか？

1. 堕落した被造物の回復のプレビュー
イエスが命令すると、激しい突風（37節）が大きな静けさ（39節）に変わったことに気づきましたか？自然がイエスに応答したのです。風と波はイエスの命令に従いました。これは驚くべきことのプレビューです。イエスが戻って来られるとき、彼が命令し、全被造物が回復されるのです。
アダムとエバが堕落したとき、被造物自体（自然全体）も共に堕落しました。だからこそ、使徒パウロはローマ人への手紙8章で、被造物全体が共にうめいていると言っているのです。これが、人間と自然の間で絶え間ない敵意がある理由です。全被造物は今、うめき、イエスの帰還を切望して待っています。しかし、イエスが戻って来られるとき、彼は新しい天と新しい地を創造します。これは今日の奇跡によってプレビューされています。イエスが命令し、自然が従ったのです。
2. 人生の嵐に直面したときの信仰
弟子たちの応答について考えてみてください。彼らは特別な人々でした。なぜか？イエスの内側の人々だったからです。彼らはイエスに近く、イエスが行い、教えたすべての素晴らしいことを見る特権を持っていました。それでも、彼らは嵐の中、イエスを信頼することができませんでした。彼らはパニックになり、イエスが彼らと一緒にいれば安全だと信じませんでした。
これはあなたにとってあまりにも身近に聞こえませんか？私には聞こえます。嵐が起こるとき、私は何をしますか？私はしばしばパニックになります。そしてどうするか？私は嵐の力を過大評価し始めます。そして、神の力を過小評価します。
では、人生の嵐に直面したとき、私たちは何をすべきでしょうか？私たちは単純にイエスの質問に戻るべきです。(1)「なぜそんなに怖がるのですか」。イエスは私たちに恐れるなと言っています。(2) 「まだ信仰がないのですか」。私たちはイエスを信頼すべきです。私たちは神を信頼すべきです。しかし、何のために信頼するのでしょうか？
彼がこの嵐を乗り越えさせてくれることを信頼すること。
嵐は悪いことではなく、私たちが神に依存することによって、神が私たちの人生で働くのを見るための素晴らしい機会であることを信頼すること。使徒パウロが第二コリント人への手紙12章10節で言ったことを思い出してください。「ですから、私は、キリストのために、弱さ、侮辱、苦痛、迫害、困難に甘んじています。なぜなら、私が弱いときにこそ、私は強いからです。」
結び
今日のテキストは私たちにこの質問をしています。「イエスとは誰か？」その答えはこうです。「イエスは神の子である」と。だからこそ、マルコはこの宣言によってマルコによる福音書を一種の「ブックエンド」のようにしています。

Mark 4:35-41
35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
CONTEXT
Jesus showed his power in different situations. So far, he has shown his divine authority
(1) in teaching (many were surprised by his excellent teaching);
(2) healing and casting out demons; and
(3) in forgiving sins. That’s what we have seen in Mark 2–3. Now in Mark 4–5, Mark shows four miracles that demonstrate the power and authority of Jesus at an entirely new level—Jesus demonstrates his power over the forces of nature. And our text today is the first miracle.
TEXT
Jesus had been busy teaching and speaking to a large crowd all day long. So, at the end of the day, when evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go across to the other side.” He meant to say to go to the southeastern shore. Jesus told his disciples to move down to a gentile region.
I think probably Jesus had been extremely tired teaching. So, he was probably seeking a time of rest from the crowds.
So, they departed. They—the disciples and Jesus—got into a boat together. We don’t know the size of the boat. But it was a boat that could have them all together (Jesus and his disciples).
37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking over the boat, so that the boat was already filling.
One important observation is that Jesus did deserve a time of good rest and yet a storm arose. Do you see it? We should therefore think that, if it happened to Jesus, then it can and will happen to me, too. Yes, when you are happily heading to a place or time of rest, thinking that you do deserve it, a storm may take place. Don’t be surprised. Don’t be annoyed. It’s not a bad thing. We’ll learn why it’s not a bad thing by studying today’s text.
The Sea of Galilee is quite larger than you expect. And the Sea of Galilee can be dangerous. It is surrounded by steep hills on all sides. Cooler air from the hills rushes down and collides with warm air in the lake’s basin, creating sudden and unexpected storms.
And the storm that arose in today’s text was no small one—it was a great and severe one. It was in the middle of the night. It’s pitch dark and there was no light. The waves were crashing over the boat. The boat was being swamped and about to break and sink in the middle of the sea. It truly is a terrifying situation!
But the most striking thing was that Jesus was “asleep on the cushion” (v. 38). How was he asleep? Why was he asleep in the boat in the middle of the storm? It was probably that Jesus had fallen asleep long before the storm arose and he didn’t wake up even after the storm began. Jesus was extremely exhausted after a long day of teaching ministry. Of course he’s God, but at the same time, he was fully human. Jesus lived with all the physical limitations and weaknesses that we have.
Shocked to see Jesus asleep, the disciples woke him up, crying, Teacher! Don’t you care we are perishing? Don’t you care we’re drowning?
Of course, their cry was a desperate cry for help. But at the same time, it was also an accusation—they were saying to Jesus, We followed you. It was you who said let’s go to the other side of the lake. We helped and supported you. We don’t deserve to die here!
Then an absolutely amazing thing happened: 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
Jesus rebuked the wind. And he silenced the sea. And both the wind and the sea obeyed. And there was a great calm (v. 39).
At this moment, can you imagine the shock that the disciples had? Their shock was related to their knowledge of the Old Testament. In many places in the Old Testament, God is described as the Lord of creation—which means that creation (the entire universe and nature) is God’s servant and obeys his command. (e.g., Ps 89:8–9 O Lord God of hosts, who is mighty as you are, O Lord, . . . You rule the raging of the sea; when its waves rise, you still them.) So, the disciples knew that only God can command nature—only God can command the waves and the wind. And their teacher who was asleep because of tiredness woke up and rebuked the wind and the waves, and they obeyed!
So, there was only one conclusion: Jesus was God! Their teacher was God himself. By silencing the waves and the wind, Jesus clearly demonstrated his “divine authority over nature” (M. Strauss). And he turned to his disciples and said, 40 “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?”
Jesus rebuked the sea (v. 39), and in v. 40, Jesus rebuked the disciples—with two questions.
- Q1 was about their fear: Why are you so afraid?
- Q2. was about their lack of faith: Have you still no faith?
We know that FEAR and LACK OF FAITH often go together. When we are afraid, we lose faith. When our faith is weak, we are afraid. And especially about their faith, Jesus is asking a very direct question: Have you still no faith? (まだ信仰がないのですか). When Jesus said “still” (まだ), he was saying, You have seen all my healings and casting out of unclean spirits, and teachings, and forgiveness of sins—and how come you still don’t trust me? You have seen all, and why do you still lack faith and fail to know who I am?
They were still terrified. Minutes ago, they were terrified by the storm. But now they were terrified by Jesus. But this fear was a good fear. A fear of God. A kind of fear that you have when you stand before God. But the disciples still couldn’t fully understand what was happening. They couldn’t answer Jesus. They were just speaking to each other, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
We can learn at least 2 encouraging lessons from today’s text.
APPLICATIONS (M. Strauss)
#1. A Preview of the Restoration of Fallen Creation
Did you notice that, when Jesus commanded, the great windstorm (v. 37) turned to a great calm (v. 39)? Nature responded to Jesus. The wind and waves obeyed Jesus’ command. This is a preview of something amazing—when Jesus comes back, he will command, and the entire creation will be restored.
When Adam and Eve fell, creation itself (entire nature) fell together. That’s why the apostle Paul says in Rom 8 that the whole creation is groaning together. This is why there is constant enmity between human beings and nature. The whole creation is now groaning and desperately waiting for the return of Jesus. But when Jesus returns, he will create new heavens and the new earth, which is being previewed by today’s miracle—Jesus commanded and nature obeyed.
#2. Faith in the Face of Life’s Storms
Think about the response of the disciples. They were special people. Why? Because they were Jesus’ insiders. They were close to Jesus and had the privilege of watching every amazing thing Jesus did and taught. And yet they still failed to trust in Jesus through the storm. They panicked, and they didn’t believe that they were safe if Jesus was with them.
Doesn’t this sound too familiar to you? It does to me. When a storm arises, what do I do? I often panic. Then what do I do? I begin to overestimate the power of the storm. And I underestimate the power of God.
So, when facing life’s storms, what should we do? We should simply go back to the questions of Jesus: (1) Why are you afraid? Jesus is telling us not to be afraid; (2) Have you still no faith? We should trust Jesus. We should trust God. But trusting for what?
- Trusting that he will carry me through this storm.
- Trusting that the storms are not a bad thing but a great opportunity for us to see God work in our lives by making us dependent upon him. Remember what the apostle Paul said in 2 Cor 12:10: For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
CLOSING
Today’s text is asking us this question: Who is Jesus? The answer is this: Jesus is the Son of God. That’s why Mark sort of “bookends” the Gospel of Mark by these proclamations:
At the beginning of the Gospel, he writes, Mark 1:1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. And at the end of the book, Mark declares the same through the confession of the centurion: Mark 15:39 And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”
We follow Jesus. He is the Son of God.
Brothers and sisters, storms will come. But we followers of Jesus should not fear but trust God who will carry us through.
Don’t forget this: We follow Jesus—and he is the Son of God.
