Mark 3:1-12
1 Again he entered the synagogue, and a man was there with a withered hand. 2 And they watched Jesus, to see whether he would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse him. 3 And he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come here.” 4 And he said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent. 5 And he looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. 6 The Pharisees went out and immediately held counsel with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him. 7 Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the sea, and a great crowd followed, from Galilee and Judea 8 and Jerusalem and Idumea and from beyond the Jordan and from around Tyre and Sidon. When the great crowd heard all that he was doing, they came to him. 9 And he told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, lest they crush him, 10 for he had healed many, so that all who had diseases pressed around him to touch him. 11 And whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.” 12 And he strictly ordered them not to make him known.

CONTEXT

Again, Jesus is in the synagogue (possibly in Capernaum). And again, it’s a Sabbath. And as you can imagine, in the synagogue on the Sabbath, there were quite a few people gathered.

TEXT

SABBATH: You know, keeping the Sabbath was one of the most important practices for the Jews. Even today, Sabbath rest is so important to Jewish people. After sunset on Friday, they gather for evening services. On Saturday morning, they gather again for Sabbath morning worship. The Sabbath concludes at sunset on Saturday.

EXOD 16: Do you remember God gave the Israelites manna? In Exodus 16, the Israelites were in the desert and were grumbling about the lack of food. God gave them manna—bread from heaven. Do you remember that, on the sixth day of week, they were allowed gather twice as much manna? Why? Because they were not allowed to collect manna on the Sabbath. Moses told them to gather manna for six days, but on the seventh day (which is a Sabbath), there would be no manna to collect. However, on the seventh day, there were people who went out to gather manna. But what happened? They found nothing. God gave them another warning: I have given you the Sabbath. So, keep it. On the sixth day, I will give you bread for two days. And God said, on the Sabbath, “‘Remain each of you in his place; let no one go out of his place on the seventh day.’ So, the people rested on the seventh day” (Exo 16:29–30)

STRICT RULES: Based on this passage, the Jewish people made a strict rule: you must not walk more than 2,000 cubits (approx. 914 meters) outside the city boundary on Sabbath. Of course, on Sabbath, you should not work; you should not cook, and so on and so forth.

EVEN TODAY: And today, of course, you shouldn’t drive on Sabbath. When we lived in Toronto, there was a large Jewish neighborhood near my house. On Saturdays (Jewish Sabbaths), I often saw Jewish families walking to and from their synagogues. I drove through the Jewish neighborhood on Sabbath several times, but I didn’t get in any trouble because it’s Canada. However, if you dare to drive through orthodox and conservative Jewish sectors in Jerusalem on Sabbath, they will throw rocks at you because you’re violating the Sabbath law. So, to Jewish people, failing to keep the Sabbath is always one of the most serious offenses.

BACK TO MARK 3: And again, in today’s passage, it was a Sabbath day, Jesus was in the synagogue, there were many Pharisees who were the experts of the law concerning the Sabbath. They knew all the details regarding what to do and what not to do on Sabbath.

And there was a man who was sick. His medical condition was that he had a withered hand (ESV, RSV), Simply, his hand was paralyzed.

HEALING ON SABBATH: By the way, healing someone on the Sabbath was not entirely prohibited. If there was a life-threatening sickness, it was allowed to practice medicine for such a case even on the Sabbath. Of course, it was the scribes who determined each case. But we should know healing was sometimes allowed on Sabbath if there was an emergency case.

However, there is tension in today’s passage because the case of the man with a withered hand was not an urgent case. Probably, the man had been living for a while with a withered hand, and he happened to be there in the synagogue on that day. And the Pharisees and the scribes would not allow the healing of the man because there was no immediate threat to his life.

So, they [the Pharisees] watched Jesus (v. 2), not because they admired him or wanted to listen to his teaching, but because they wanted to see whether he would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse him. In other words, the Pharisees (Jesus’ adversaries) watched Jesus (a) because they knew Jesus would violate the Sabbath law, and more terribly, (b) because they—in a way—wanted Jesus to violate the Sabbath law so that they might accuse him of that violation.

Of course, Jesus knew it. And he took the chance to teach something: Okay, you take Sabbath very seriously. You think you know every detail of the Sabbath law. Now let me ask you: “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill?” (v. 4)

Now, is this a hard question? I don’t think it is. If you remove the phrase “on the Sabbath” from the question, it becomes even easier: “Is it lawful to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill?” Anyone could answer this question: It is lawful to do good and to save life; it is unlawful to do harm or to kill.

Surprisingly—or maybe not so surprisingly—however, the Pharisees were silent. They didn’t say a thing. They couldn’t even answer this simple question. Or more precisely, they didn’t want to answer that question because the answer was too obvious (it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath; then, it is lawful to heal the man—and we don’t want that!)

So, Jesus’ question and their silence made it clear to all of them that there was something terribly wrong about the teachings and practices of the Pharisees.

What was wrong?

  • The Pharisees were excessively concerned with minor details of the law.
  • And they forgot the true purpose of the law—the true purpose of the law was for us to love God and to love our neighbor.
  • Their excessive attention to the minute details of the law made them (1) arrogant and (2) insensitive
  • So, the first result was that they ended up rejecting Jesus, the Son of God, the culmination of the law (Rom 10:4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes)
  • Another sad result was that they became insensitive (cruel) to the suffering of their fellow brother (the man with a paralyzed hand).

And Jesus looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart (v. 5).

Jesus the Son of God (the Life, the Truth, and the Way) was right there in front of them. But the Pharisees rejected him immediately. If they reject Jesus, what do they have? They only have distress and death, and cruelty toward their brothers and sisters. That was what was taking place in the synagogue. And it provoked anger and sorrow in Jesus.

Tolstoy said in Anna Karenina: “Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.”

The same is true with those who accept Jesus and those who do not.

Those who accept Jesus are all alike—they realize they are sinners before God; they realize God offers forgiveness of sin through faith in Jesus Christ; so, they accept Jesus as their Lord and become children of God.

However, those who reject Jesus do so in their own ways—they refuse to accept Jesus for many different reasons.

  • Some people choose family over Jesus.
  • Some of course choose money over Jesus.
  • Some choose their work and career, not Jesus.
  • Some people reject Jesus because of peer-pressure.
  • Some refuse to follow Jesus because they love worldly pleasures more.
  • Some refuse to accept Jesus because their own country or culture is more important to them.
  • Some reject Jesus because he never promised worldly blessings or riches.
  • And the Pharisees chose self-righteousness.

And Jesus was right in front of them and said, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored (v. 5).

Isn’t this amazing? What Jesus did was to demonstrate (a) who he was and (b) what the true meaning of the Sabbath was. (a) Jesus was lord of the Sabbath, and (b) the Sabbath was not made to put human beings under lots of detailed regulations (e.g., you shouldn’t cook, you shouldn’t walk more than 1 km, etc.)—but was given to us as God’s gracious gift to give us rest.

The Sabbath is not about those ridiculous rules; it’s about true and eternal rest—and true and ultimate rest is only found in God himself. The Sabbath is therefore the foretaste of the ultimate and eternal rest we will have in God through his Son Jesus Christ.

So, through the healing of the man on the Sabbath, Jesus demonstrated his lordship over the Sabbath and the purpose of his coming was to rescue us from our sins and give us true peace and rest before God. And God confirmed it by healing the man’s hand: “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored (v. 5). God the Father clearly showed to all that Jesus was the Son of God. God clearly manifested it before the Pharisees, in the synagogue, on the Sabbath.

Now, did the Pharisees kneel before Jesus?

No.

6 The Pharisees went out and immediately held counsel with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him.

Let me give you a bit of historical background.

Back then, Judea was ruled by the Roman Empire. But Rome didn’t rule the region directly. They installed a kind of proxy king. His name was Herod Antipas. He’s the one who killed John the Baptist. Herod Antipas was therefore loyal to Rome because his dynasty was dependent on Rome. And the “Herodians”—as the name shows—were those who loyally supported Herod Antipas. So, the Herodians also supported the Roman control of Palestine.

So, to Herod Antipas and his supporters “Herodians,” what was the most important task? It was to keep the region at peace. There should be no riots, no uprising, nothing like that. Peace, stability, and lots of tax money for Rome—that was all they wanted.

So, whenever there were popular teachers, leaders, or rabbis emerging in the region, the Herodians didn’t like it because they could easily lead to uprisings or rebellions against Rome.

And when Jesus started his ministry and became known for his amazing teachings and miracles, the Herodians were probably concerned about the situation because a large crowd was always following him. So, the Herodians were probably keeping their eye on Jesus because they had to remove him if something happened, and that’s why the Pharisees sided with the Herodians to make a plan to kill Jesus. Do you see it? They wanted to destroy Jesus for different reasons:

  • The Pharisees – for religious reasons
  • The Herodians – for political reasons

It’s shockingly ironical:

Jesus (lord of the Sabbath; the culmination of the law itself) taught the Pharisees the true meaning of the Sabbath: rest in God; love your neighbor.

And the Pharisees

  • were provoked and became indignant
  • decided to kill Jesus
  • and thus completely violated the true meaning of the Sabbath because they were determined to do harm and to kill (not to do good and to heal).

I said above that the Pharisees chose self-righteousness. But we too can fall prey to it. What today’s passage is asking us is this: Are you going to meet God in your own righteousness or in the righteousness of Christ? Your self-righteousness is not going to work. Like the Pharisees did, you will end up in a disaster.

Now, Jesus and his disciples went to the sea, and “a great crowd followed, from Galilee and Judea and Jerusalem and Idumea and from beyond the Jordan and from around Tyre and Sidon” (vv. 7–8)

The reason they came to him was because they had heard about all the amazing miracles (healings) that Jesus was doing. There were so many, and they were uncontrollable that they were pressing in upon him. They were desperate. They were eager to touch him: all who had diseases pressed around him to touch him (v. 10). And Jesus told his disciples to have a boat for him (v. 9) so that he could teach them from the boat.

I think it was on the same Sabbath day. Many people walked a long distance to see and touch Jesus.

  • The Pharisees would think it’s a serious violation of the law. The Pharisees would think the people should be punished.
  • But neither God nor Jesus punished them; Jesus graciously healed many people who were suffering from disease.

Do you see what’s happening? This is a gospel event. Immediately after the arrogant Pharisees rejected Jesus and even plotted to kill him, a large desperate crowd was pressing upon Jesus for healing, and Jesus healed them. This is the promise of God: come to Jesus and you will become children of God; call upon the name of the Lord, and you and your household will be saved!

Many of the people who came to see Jesus were demoniacs (those who were possessed by unclean spirits). And “whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, ‘You are the Son of God’” (v. 11).

Even though the religious teachers and the experts of the law of Moses didn’t recognize Jesus Christ as the Messiah, the demons exactly knew and recognized that Jesus was the Son of God. The demons trembled at his presence, and they fell down before him—they were conquered.

CLOSING

So, who is Jesus? He is the lord over the Sabbath; and true Sabbath rest is given only by faith in Jesus. And he is the Son of God, who healed all who came to him.

Most of all, he is our Messiah, Lord, and Savior.
