創世記 3
1 さて蛇は、神である主が造られた野の生き物のうちで、ほかのどれよりも賢かった。蛇は女に言った。「園の木のどれからも食べてはならないと、神は本当に言われたのですか。」
2 女は蛇に言った。「私たちは園の木の実を食べてもよいのです。
3 しかし、園の中央にある木の実については、『あなたがたは、それを食べてはならない。それに触れてもいけない。あなたがたが死ぬといけないからだ』と神は仰せられました。」
4 すると、蛇は女に言った。「あなたがたは決して死にません。
5 それを食べるそのとき、目が開かれて、あなたがたが神のようになって善悪を知る者となることを、神は知っているのです。」
6 そこで、女が見ると、その木は食べるのに良さそうで、目に慕わしく、またその木は賢くしてくれそうで好ましかった。それで、女はその実を取って食べ、ともにいた夫にも与えたので、夫も食べた。

前置き
数年前、私は面白い韓国のテレビ番組を偶然見つけました。 その番組で、彼らは彼の部屋に10匹以上のヘビを持っている韓国の高校生の少年を登場させました。 それらは彼の「ペット」蛇でした。 大きなヘビたちと小さなヘビたちでした。 それはとてもひどいシーンでした。 私は自分の目を信じることができませんでした。 どうやって人が彼の部屋で10匹以上のヘビと一緒に住むことができるのでしょうか？ 彼はやや例外的なので（またはクレイジーな）テレビ番組に出演しました、そうですよね？ ヘビが好きな人を見つけるのはとても難しいです。

それで、そこで何があったのでしょうか？ 今日の本文を一度見てみましょう。
本文解説
今日の相互作用は、ほとんどがヘビと女性の間にあります。
蛇（1節）
蛇を通して女性と会話をしたのは、サタン自身でした。 ヨハネの黙示録(?) 12章9節は、サタンとヘビをはっきりと関連付けています。
そのため、「蛇は、神である主が造られた野の生き物のうちで、ほかのどれよりも賢かった」（1節）、疑う余地もなく欺瞞的で狡猾でした。 そして、この邪悪な生き物がその女性に近づき、話しかけました（1節）。
蛇の演説ではっきりと見えるのは、サタンが神の言葉を完全に否定したり変えたりするのではなく、少しだけ変えたりするということです。 そのような意味で、サタンはあまりにも邪悪で賢いです。 あなたが死んでいくことを知らずに死なせる方法を知っているということです。
蛇が女に最初に言った言葉は何だったのか？ それは質問でした。 サタンは、神が本当に何を言っていたのかについて疑問を提起します。 「神は本当に言われたのですか」（1節）もちろん神様がおっしゃいました。 もちろん、創世記2章16~17節で神は命令を下し、男にも女にも言いました。 ところが、サタンはこの質問を投げかけながら女性を揺さぶり始めます。

しかし、神様が創世記2章16~17節でおっしゃったことを覚えてください。
2:16 神である主は人に命じられた。「あなたは園のどの木からでも思いのまま食べてよい。
2:17 しかし、善悪の知識の木からは、食べてはならない。その木から食べるとき、あなたは必ず死ぬ。」

女 (2-3節)

蛇 (4~5節)

サタンがその女性に言った言葉は部分的に真実でした。 なぜなら、彼女が禁止された果物を食べても、すぐに死ぬことはないからです。 蛇は実は(1)「あなたがたは決して死にません (すぐに)」- （2） 「しかし、あなたは神との関係が破壊されるので、必ず死ぬでしょう。」（もちろん蛇は2部を言っていません。）。
これは神に対する露骨な反乱でした。
そして蛇は神を誹謗し続けました。 「神様がその特定の木を食べないことを願う『本当の』理由が知りたいですか？ それはあなたが死ぬからではなく、「それを食べるそのとき、目が開かれて、あなたがたが神のようになって善悪を知る者となることを、神は知っているのです。」からです。 そして、それが、神があなたのその木の実を食べることを禁止する本当の理由です。」
女 (6節)
その女性はサタンと合流しました。
創世記3章6節は、聖書で最も悲しく残酷な一節です。 そこで、女が見ると、その木は食べるのに良さそうで、目に慕わしく、またその木は賢くしてくれそうで好ましかった。それで、女はその実を取って食べ、ともにいた夫にも与えたので、夫も食べた。(6節)

死 (vv. 7–8)

後暴風

適用
[1] 私たちは堕落し、壊れました。
嫌がるかもしれません。 しかし、私たち全員が常に罪を犯すという事実を否定することはできません。 私たちは考えと行動で罪を犯します。 創世記の第 3 章は、私たちにその理由を示しています。 私たちは罪人なので罪を犯します。 私たちは罪悪の中に生まれ、罪悪によって本性が汚されるため、罪人です。 すべてのことはエデンの園から始まったのですが、その人とその妻のアダムとイブがすべての人類を代表する人々だったからです。

ここで神様は明らかに人を女の子孫に送り、(つまり、人間の肉体で)サタンの王国を破壊すると宣言します。
人間が倒れた時、神は彼らをキリストの中で救い、回復することを約束しました。

Genesis 3
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” 4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. 8 And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.
Introduction
A few years ago, I came across an interesting Korean TV show. In the show, they featured a Korean high school boy who had more than 10 snakes in his room. They were his “pet” snakes. Big ones and small ones. It was such a terrifying scene. I couldn’t believe my eyes. How can a person live with more than 10 snakes in his room? He was on the TV show because he is kind of exceptional (or insane), right? It’s so hard to find people who like snakes.
What’s the first word that comes to mind when you hear the word “snake”? Fear, wicked, stealthy, slither, poison, bite, gruesome, dark, cruel, or death.
I think Genesis 3 gives us the reason: Satan used a snake in tempting the woman. And for that reason God particularly cursed the serpent (Genesis 3:14). So, it may be that, when we look at snakes, we (all human beings) are reminded of this tragic and horrible event that took place in the Garden of Eden in Genesis 3.
So, what happened there? Let’s have a look at today’s text.
Exposition
Today’s interaction is mostly between the serpent and the woman.
The Serpent (v. 1)
It was Satan himself who took the serpent and used it to talk to the woman. Revelation 12:9 clearly associates Satan and the serpent.
That’s why “the serpent was craftier than any other beast of the field” (v. 1)—no doubt it was sly, deceitful, and cunning. And this wicked creature approached the woman and spoke to her (v. 1).
What’s clearly seen in the serpent’s speech is that Satan does not completely deny or change the word of God; rather, it changes just a little bit of it. In that sense, Satan is so wickedly smart—he knows how to kill you without you realizing that you’re dying.
What was the first thing that the serpent said to the woman? It was a question. Satan questions whether God really said something: “Did God actually say?” (v. 1) Of course, God did. Of course, God did command and say something both to the man and to the woman in Genesis 2:16–17. But Satan starts shaking the woman by asking this question, Did God actually say?”
And he continues. This time he changes (distorts) the content of the word of God: Did God really say, “You shall not eat of any tree in the garden”? What is he doing here? He’s trying to slander God. What he is trying to say is, “God made all these trees. But it looks like he said, ‘Don’t eat of any tree in the garden,’ right? Why? Is he trying to starve you? Doesn’t he want to feed you? Doesn’t he want you to be happy here?”
But remember what God said in Genesis 2:16–17: “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but [only one exception] of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
We can see that the serpent purposefully avoids mentioning “death.” His goal is to seduce the woman to eat the forbidden fruit. The word “death” can scare her. So, he doesn’t even mention it.
The Woman (vv. 2–3)
OK, what would be the best response to the serpent if you were approached by it? It was obvious that the serpent approached the woman to win her, to take her away from God. So, the best thing that she could have possibly done was to leave the place, to run away from the wicked serpent, to depart from Satan and go to God.
But she had a “conversation” with the serpent—that was a huge mistake. And even from the outset, she was already affected by the serpent had said:
- Well, first, she tried to “correct” the words of the serpent: Actually, God didn’t say, “You shall not eat of any tree in the garden” (v. 1, the serpent’s words); God said, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden” (v. 2, the woman’s words).
- But the woman didn’t get the word of God precisely—she said, “God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die” (v. 3).
- Somehow, she avoids mentioning the name of that particular tree (“the tree of the knowledge of good and evil”) and only indirectly points to the tree by saying, “the tree that is in the midst of the garden.” She knew that this conversation was going in that direction, and she wanted to remain open to the possibility of eating the forbidden fruit. That’s why she didn’t really mention the exact name of the tree—because if you mention the name, it reminds you of God’s command.
- Surprisingly, she added something new (“neither shall you touch it”)—God never said anything about touching the tree.
- And the woman didn’t really understand the meaning of “die, dying.” She seems to say that you shouldn’t eat or touch the fruit of that tree in the middle of the garden because if you do so, you will die immediately.
The Serpent (vv. 4–5)
Now the serpent is glad because he can see that the woman is listening to him. And the serpent picked up from what the woman said: “You will not surely die” (v. 4)
What Satan said to the woman was partly true because even if she would eat the forbidden fruit she would not die immediately. The serpent was saying, in fact, (1) Of course “you will not surely die” (immediately)—(2) “but you will surely die because your relationship with God will be destroyed” (but of course the serpent didn’t say the second part).
This was an outright rebellion against God.
And the serpent continued to slander God: Do you want to know the “real” reason that God doesn’t want you to eat of that particular tree?—it’s not because you will die; but it’s because “when you eat of it, your eyes will be opened and you will be like God”—and God is quite uncomfortable with that—that’s the real reason that he forbid you from eating the fruit of that tree.
The Woman (v. 6)
The woman joined Satan.
Genesis 3:6 is the saddest and most horrendous verse in the Bible: “So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her and he ate” (v. 6)
She didn’t resist the serpent but paid attention to him. She listened to Satan. She forgot about (or didn’t want to remember) the countless blessings that God had given her in the Garden, and instead she listened to the serpent and focused on that very one forbidden tree. And she thought, Yes, serpent, you’re right. Why did God forbid me from eating the fruit of that one tree? Yes, Satan, you’re probably right. God was hiding something from me, something really good. God was hiding it from me. Serpent, I think you’re right—I don’t think I will die. Rather, this is my chance to be like God.
The woman is now standing right in front of that one forbidden tree. God had given her billions of other great trees and blessings except this one tree—and she went to that one tree. And she disobeyed God in her heart and mind. She thought:
- Wow, the fruit looks delicious!
- The fruit is so pretty.
- I think the fruit really can give me great wisdom (so I can be like God)
And she disobeyed God in her action:
- Alone: “she took of its fruit and ate”
- Included her husband, too: “and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate”
What’s really shocking is that the man didn’t do anything to stop the woman. The man was with his wife the whole time. He was supposed to drive the serpent away, but he didn’t do it. Instead, he just kept quiet. And worse, he received the fruit from the woman and ate it. So, both the man and the woman rebelled against God.
Death (vv. 7–8)
“Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden” (vv. 7–8)
The man and the woman immediately found out that they had been deceived by the serpent. What happened after they rebelled against God was that (1) their eyes were opened, and(2) they realized their nakedness (v. 7). They never became like God; instead, they became ashamed of their own being. They were immediately ashamed of their naked bodies. This means that their self-esteem completely crashed. And their temporary solution was that they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths (v. 7) to cover their shame. But it never solved their problem.
Worse yet was that their relationship with God was severely damaged. When the husband and wife “heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden” (v. 8), they almost had a heart attack. The sound of the LORD God used to be a sweet and delightful sound. But now after the fall, everything changed, including their close and perfect relationship with God. They were afraid of God, and that’s why “the man and his wife were hiding themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden” (v. 8). Look at that they were hiding among the trees of the garden; the trees of the garden were not given as a hiding place but given as food and abundant blessings for them. Because of their rebellion, they couldn’t enjoy those trees—they had to hide from God among the trees.
The Aftermath
In the rest of the chapter:
- The LORD God called to the man (not the woman) (v. 9) and asked him “have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” (v. 11)
- And the man blamed both the woman and God (v. 12)—he was acting like a coward.
- And the woman blamed the snake (v. 13)
- God punished and cursed the snake (v. 14)
- God punished the woman (v. 16)
- Pain in childbearing
- your desire will be your husband, and he will rule over you
- God punished the man (vv. 17–19): his punishment list is much longer
- The ground will be under a curse: so, your entire life: you will have to struggle to grow enough food (because the ground will not easily cooperate)
- You’ll have to sweat to earn a living
- And God declares DEATH: You are dust, and to dust you shall return (v. 19)
- And they were driven out of the Garden of Eden (vv. 22–24)
Applications
[1] We are fallen and broken
You may not like it. But you can’t deny that WE ALL SIN at all times. WE SIN in our thoughts and in our acts. And Genesis 3 shows us why: we sin because we are sinners; we are sinners because we are born in sin and our nature is tainted with sinfulness. And it all began in the Garden of Eden, from the man and his wife, Adam and Eve, because they were the representatives of all humanity.
Again, you may not like it. This is not something we’d like to hear. But it’s true.
But in Genesis 3, the darkest chapter of the Bible, God sheds light.
[2] God’s Redemption Plan
3:15 “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel”
Here God clearly proclaims that he will send someone as the woman’s offspring (i.e. in human flesh) and he will destroy Satan’s kingdom.
When human beings fell, God promised to redeem and recover them in Christ.
