創世記 20章

1 From there Abraham journeyed toward the territory of the Negeb and lived between Kadesh and Shur; and he sojourned in Gerar. 2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, “She is my sister.” And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah. 3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night and said to him, “Behold, you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is a man’s wife.” 4 Now Abimelech had not approached her. So he said, “Lord, will you kill an innocent people? 5 Did he not himself say to me, ‘She is my sister’? And she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ In the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my hands I have done this.” 6 Then God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know that you have done this in the integrity of your heart, and it was I who kept you from sinning against me. Therefore I did not let you touch her. 7 Now then, return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet, so that he will pray for you, and you shall live. But if you do not return her, know that you shall surely die, you and all who are yours.” 8 So Abimelech rose early in the morning and called all his servants and told them all these things. OPENING
We can’t avoid aging. As we get older, we lose the energy and beauty of youth. My hair used to be darker. But it’s salt and pepper now. It’ll turn all gray and white.
But there are some who get old beautifully and gracefully. Even at the age of 60 or 70, some men and women are still attractive and good-looking. It’s rare, but it’s not impossible.
However, have you ever seen any 90-year-old woman who is still so unbelievably beautiful that her husband is always afraid of other men?
As for me, I haven’t seen such a woman in my life. But I have—well, we all have—heard about one. Her name is Sarah, Abraham’s wife.
CONTEXT
To understand today’s story, we should go back to about 25 years ago (Gen 12). Back then, Abraham (Abram) was 75 years old, and Sarah (Sarai) was 66. Because Sarai was such a beautiful woman, Abram thought the Egyptians would kill him to take her. So, he told Sarai to tell people that she was Abram’s sister, not his wife, which was partly true because Sarai was in fact Abram’s half-sister. So, Pharaoh, King of Egypt, almost married Sarai. But God stopped it.
Now twenty-five years have passed, and we’re in Gen 20, Abraham is 99, and Sarah is 91. What happened during the past 25 years? (Gen 13–19). During those years, Abraham has experienced so much of God’s power and blessings. But Gen 20 is disappointing because Abraham doesn’t seem to have grown.
TEXT
This time, it wasn’t in Egypt. He moved down “to the territory of the Negeb” (v. 1), and he lived in the land of Gerar. And Abimelech was king of Gerar (v. 2). And like I said, even at the age of 90, Sarah was probably still beautiful, and Abraham was still afraid that the men would kill him and take Sarah. So, he was telling the same lie again: “She is my sister” (v. 2).
Some can say that Abraham’s lie was not really evil. It was just to protect himself and his wife Sarah. Probably. But Abraham’s lie had three serious problems.
First, as we learned in Gen 12, the fact that Abraham was saying such lies showed that he was not trusting in God enough.
Secondly, Abraham’s lies threatened God’s covenant itself. What was God’s promise? His covenant was to give him a son and make his descendants into a great nation. So, if Abraham says, “She is my sister,” other men can marry her. What if she becomes pregnant with another man? So, by telling such a lie, Abraham was doing something that could harm God’s plans.
Lastly, Abraham’s lies could put other men in danger. That’s what happened to Abimelech. Poor Abimelech had no clue that Sarah was Abraham’s wife. How would he know? So, Abimelech took Sarah to marry her (v. 2). I’d like to ask Abraham: What in the world were you thinking? Do you even know what you’re doing to this man Abimelech?
Verse 3 starts with the conjunction “But” (not in the Japanese, however), which probably means “in spite of Abraham’s stupid deed,” God appeared in Abimelech’s dream. And God showed his anger: “Behold, you are a dead man” (v. 3). And the reason was because he took a married woman as his new wife.
Of course, Abimelech complains and defends himself (vv. 4–5). And I want to defend him, too. And what Abimelech says shows a shocking contrast between a believer and a non-believer. I say “shocking” because the believer was the liar, and the non-believer was the innocent. Abimelech took Sarah because he never knew she was Abraham’s wife. Indeed, he did it in the integrity of his heart and the innocence of his hands (v. 5). By contrast, what did Abraham do? What did Sarah do? Both lied to him. Abraham said, “She is my sister,” and Sarah, “He is my brother.” Again, how would Abimelech know if both Abraham and Sarah lied to him?
It’s so relieving to see that God knows Abimelech’s integrity (v. 6). What’s even more amazing is what God says after that: “It was I who kept you from sinning against me. Therefore, I did not let you touch her” (v. 6b). In God’s sovereign plan, for some reason, God allowed Abimelech to take Sarah, but he didn’t permit him to touch her or physically approach her. I think this was God’s gracious interruption for Abimelech. God was in fact protecting Abimelech from committing the sin of stealing and adultery.
God gave Abimelech both a command and a warning (vv. 6–7): “Return the man’s wife” (v. 7). It’s remarkable that God calls Abraham a “prophet” and that he will pray for Abimelech for him to live.
Abimelech obeyed God immediately (vv. 8–9). He got up early in the morning, called all his servants and told them what had happened. “And the men were very much afraid” (v. 8). Again, the text shows a shocking contrast between the believers (Abraham and Sarah) and the non-believer (Abimelech). Abimelech and his servants didn’t know God. But when they encountered God, they were afraid. But both Abraham and Sarah didn’t seem to have fear of God.
What’s also striking is that the non-believing Gentile Abimelech rebuked the believing Jew Abraham, saying, “What have you done to us?” Why this great sin? “You have done to me things that ought not to be done” (v. 9). We haven’t read the rest of the chapter. But it is incredible that Abraham never admitted his fault; he never apologized. Instead, he just gave all kinds of lame excuses (vv. 11–13): (1) You guys have no fear of God (this is nonsense because of v. 8); (2) So, I was afraid if you would kill me because of my wife; (3) in fact, she is my half-sister.
If I were Abimelech, I would burn with anger and say to him, “Get out of here, right now.” But something surprising happened. Abimelech gave Abraham sheep, oxen, both male and female servants. Of course, he returned Sarah to Abraham. Abimelech even gave him land: “Behold, my land is before you; dwell where it pleases you” (v. 15). It’s funny that Abimelech gave Abraham a thousand pieces of silver and then said to Sarah, “I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver” (v. 16). Abimelech was also gently rebuking Sarah for her lie.
So, what in the world is happening here? Who did wrong? Abraham and Sarah. But who are receiving blessings? Abraham and Sarah.
You may think it’s unfair. You may feel upset. You may feel sorry for Abimelech.
APPLICATIONS
Yes, I think it’s not fair. But let’s not be distracted by unimportant issues here:
First, some may say, “Wow, the liar Abraham was not punished. So, we can tell lies when it’s necessary.” If you think this way, think again. Of course, this is not the lesson we should learn from today’s text.
Or, some say, “God almost punished the innocent Abimelech even if he didn’t do anything wrong. God is so unfair. God is biased.” But, brothers and sisters, remember that God didn’t punish Abimelech; rather, he protected Abimelech from sinning.
So then, what are the takeaways from Gen 20?
(1) God’s Sovereign Plan
The more we read Genesis, the clearer it becomes that, when God first appeared to Abram in Gen 12, it was not because God saw something great in him—it was just because of God’s sovereign election. It means God chose Abraham just because it was God’s will to do so. Nothing urged him or made him to choose Abraham.
We know this because we read Gen 12–20. There Abraham failed multiple times. But God’s covenant with this imperfect man continued/remained because God’s promise was not dependent on Abraham himself; it was God’s own plan, God’s sovereign covenant and promise.
God called Abraham a “prophet” in Gen 20. A prophet is God’s messenger, one who blesses the world by declaring God’s wonderful message. When God first called Abraham, he promised that Abraham would be a blessing to the world. Now God says Abraham is a prophet to pray for Abimelech. Moreover, Abimelech’s generous blessing for Abraham (e.g. sheep, oxen, silver, and even land) shows that God is faithfully keeping his promise to bless Abraham.
The second thing we learn about God in today’s text is his amazing and unconditional love and mercy.
(2) God’s Faithful Love
Think about this man Abraham. Of course, there is something remarkable about his own faith. I don’t deny that. However, he was just a human being with numerous weaknesses and failures, just like you and me. And Abraham and his wife Sarah repeat the same sin in Gen 12 and Gen 20.
So, you may want to blame Abraham for his lack of faith or his stupidity. But we are not too different from Abraham because we too tend to make same mistakes/sins repeatedly.
We all have habitual sins, repeated failures.
- Some Christians have constant money-related issues. They are not wise in their spending. They are not generous in giving. Instead of glorifying God with their money, they use it to pursue worldly pleasures.
- Some have hidden yet repeated sexual sins.
- Some families are secretly and quietly falling apart because husbands, wives, or children have no intention to change their selfishness before God.
- Some Christians continue to have faith problems. They say they put their trust in God. But they are afraid of suffering. Their faith-life is repeatedly paralyzed by their fear and anxiety.
Again, after Gen 20, what we should know is not that God doesn’t care about my repeated sins but that God’s amazing love and mercy abound all the more where sin increased (Romans 5:20b). Please don’t get this wrong—of course, it doesn’t mean that we should keep sinning so that God’s grace may increase. No. No. Absolutely no. If you truly know God’s amazing mercy and love for you—that is, if you really know the meaning of “where sin increased, grace abounded all the more” (Rom 5:20b)—you will never want to stay in your repeated sin and increase it; instead, your strong desire will be to stop that repeated sin, turn around, and run to God.
The Bible’s penetrating theme is God’s amazing—almost unbelievably great—love and mercy for his children. Today’s text (Gen 20) is just one of the numerous texts that demonstrate it.
Through Gen 20, God says, “I loved Abraham in spite of his continued failures,” and he says, “So, I love you, too, in spite of your continued failures.” Even our human parents will continue to love us, no matter what. Then how much more will God our Father love us? Think about his insanely great love for you.
