創世記 11章
26 テラは七十年生きて、アブラムとナホルとハランを生んだ。
27 これはテラの歴史である。テラはアブラム、ナホル、ハランを生み、ハランはロトを生んだ。
28 ハランは父テラに先立って、親族の地であるカルデア人のウルで死んだ。
29 アブラムとナホルは妻を迎えた。アブラムの妻の名はサライであった。ナホルの妻の名はミルカといって、ハランの娘であった。ハランはミルカの父、またイスカの父であった。
30 サライは不妊の女で、彼女には子がいなかった。
31 テラは、その息子アブラムと、ハランの子である孫のロトと、息子アブラムの妻である嫁のサライを伴い、カナンの地に行くために、一緒にカルデア人のウルを出発した。しかし、ハランまで来ると、彼らはそこに住んだ。

創世記 11:26-32; 12:1-4「アブラムの召命」
数年前にハミルトンの教会に行ったとき、教会のメンバーと短い会話をしました。 彼が自分について言った言葉の一つは、30年以上同じ町の同じ家に住んでいるということでした。 彼は生まれてずっと同じ家に住んでいると言い、彼と彼の家族は一度も引っ越したことがないということです。 私にはまったく引っ越しをしたことのない人がいることを知ったのがとても印象的でした。
今日の聖書で神様はアブラムに来て「あなたはあなたの土地、あなたの親族、あなたの父の家を離れ」とおっしゃいました。
背景
ノアの洪水の後、ノアの子孫は増え、地上に広がっていきました。 バベルの塔の後、創世記はシェム(++?)とその子孫に焦点を合わせ続けます。 創世記11:10-25は、シェム(++?)の世代がテラに至るまでずっと続いていることについてです。 今日の前半（11:26-32）は、テラの家族についての話です。
3人の息子がいましたが、1人目はアブラム、2人目はナホル、3人目はハランでした。 彼らはウルに住んでいました。 ウルはメソポタミアの都市でした。 しかし、テラと彼の家族全員がウルを離れようとしていました。 彼らはどこに行こうとしたのでしょうか？ 彼らはカナンの方に向かっていました。 （31節）。 さて、彼らはカナンに到着したのでしょうか？ いいえ、「しかし、ハランまで来ると、彼らはそこに住んだ。」（31節）。

神様が約束しました

最初の祝福は、アブラムの妻サライが妊娠できなかったため（11:30）、最も信じがたいものでした。 神がアブラムに息子を与えると言ったなら、もっと信じやすかったでしょう。 しかし今、あまりにも突然、神様は彼に数多くの子孫を与え、彼らが一国の地位に成長すると約束します。

アブラムは信じて従順でした。
アブラムの反応はすごかったです。 「主が告げられたとおりに出て行った。」（4節）。 アブラムは神を疑いませんでした。 アブラムが躊躇した形跡がありません。 彼は神を信じました。 アブラムは神の言葉に従いました。 「アブラムは、主が告げられたとおりに出て行った。ロトも彼と一緒であった。ハランを出たとき、アブラムは七十五歳であった。」（4節）。
私はアブラムが神の命令に反応する姿にいつも驚きます。 アブラムの行動を描写するためには(1)信仰と(2)服従という二つの単語があります。 +++++ ヒブ11:8によると、「アブラハムは遺産として受け取るところに出ろという時、信頼で従った。 そして彼はどこへ行くのかも知らずに出て行った。」 +++++
アブラムの家庭に戻りましょう。 彼の信仰がどれほど優れていたかを私たちは知ることになるでしょう。 テラには 3 人の息子がいました。 しかし、彼の家庭が続くという保証はありませんでした。 (1) 寺の息子の一人であるハランがハランで死ぬと、彼は息子一人(ロト)と娘一人(ミルカ)を残し、(2)もう一人の息子ナホルがテラと一緒に住んでいなかったので、ナホルは妻と一緒にウルに残っただけで、(3)アブラムがいました。 しかし、彼には子供がいませんでした。 彼の妻、サライは子供を産むことができませんでした。 それでその時、ロト(ハランの一人息子)だけが家族の唯一の希望であり、彼が唯一家族の血統を受け継ぐことができました。

しかし、ヘブライ書(?)11章8節によると、アブラムは主がおっしゃったことがあまりにも驚き、信じられないにもかかわらず、ただ神を信じて従順だったそうです。
たとえば、2014年、私の家族は韓国にいました。 多くの祈りと討論の末、リンと私は私が勉強するためにカナダに来ることを決めました。 ある日、私たちは子供たちのスーとポールに、私たちが韓国を離れてカナダに行って、これから数年間暮らすと言いました。 スーはG5とポールG3にいました。 私は子供たちに(1)私たちがどこに行くのか、(2)いつ行くのか、(3)私たちがなぜ行くのか、(4)私たちがカナダにどれくらいいるのかなどに対する明確で十分な情報を与えました。 しかし、子供たちは依然としてショックを受けていました。 彼らは学校、友人、祖父母、そして韓国のすべてを愛していたので、涙を流しました。 私が子供たちを安心させ慰めるために最善を尽くしましたが、子供たちが両親に従順で従うことは依然として困難でした。
ご覧のとおり、アブラムから見えるのは本当に驚きです。
テーマ:神様を信じて従順にしてください！
今日の本文は、私たちにキリスト教の中核を示しているので重要です。 それはすべて信じて従うことです。
アブラムは神を信じて従順でした。
(1) 私たちも神様を信じます。 私たちは神に対する信頼を告白し、神を信じます。
(2) 私たちはまた、私たちの人生で彼に服従するために努力します。
神に従うことは、常に簡単ではありません。 しかし、私たちは父の神を信じているので、喜んでそうします。 神に従うということは、時々私たちがいる場所を離れなければならないことを意味します。 それはあまりにも多くの慰めを与える場所かもしれませんし、私たちの習慣的な罪の場所かもしれません。 たとえば、イスラム国家(例:アゼルバイジャン)で、キリスト教徒になるということは、あなたがあなたの国、あなたの祖国、お父さんの家によって捨てられ、嫌われるということを意味します。 それほど多くはありませんが、神とキリストに従うために愛する家族と国を離れるイスラム教徒がいます。
人々はキリスト教徒が考えることもなく、ただ信じるだけだと言ってキリスト教徒を嘲弄し攻撃します。 彼らの攻撃が偏向的であることを知りながら、私たちは信頼を優先することを認めます。 私たちがそうするのは神の原理であり、私たちの原理ではないからです。
現代人の間違いの 1 つは、彼らが通常考えることが信じることよりも優れていると主張しているように見えることです。 しかし、彼らは信じないと人間社会が急速に崩壊するという事実を無視しているように見えます。
神を信じて従う最も重要な行為は、イエス·キリストを信じることです。
それは聖書がイエスについて語ることを信じることであり、イエスが自分について語ることを信じることです。
イエス·キリストは父親がメシアとして世の中に送った神様の息子です。
彼は人の肉体を着てきて、彼はあなたの代わりに死にました。 彼はあなたのすべての罪の代償を払いました。
彼は墓から復活し、今、神の右側に座っています。 彼はすぐに戻ってくるはずです。
私たちはもうキリストの中にいるので、神のところに行ってその方の前に立つことができます。
あなたはこれを信じて、神様はあなたを彼の神聖な目の前で完璧に正義の人だと思っています。
信じられないほど驚くべきニュースではありませんか？

Genesis 11 (ESV)
26 When Terah had lived 70 years, he fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran. 27 Now these are the generations of Terah. Terah fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran fathered Lot. 28 Haran died in the presence of his father Terah in the land of his kindred, in Ur of the Chaldeans. 29 And Abram and Nahor took wives. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor’s wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran the father of Milcah and Iscah. 30 Now Sarai was barren; she had no child. 31 Terah took Abram his son and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife, and they went forth together from Ur of the Chaldeans to go into the land of Canaan, but when they came to Haran, they settled there. 32 The days of Terah were 205 years, and Terah died in Haran.
Genesis 12 (ESV)
1 Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. 2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” 4 So Abram went, as the LORD had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.
OPENING
When I attended a church in Hamilton a few years ago, I had a short conversation with a church member. One of the things he said about himself was that he had been living in the same house in the same neighborhood for more than 30 years. He said he had been living in the same house since his birth. He and his family never moved. To me, it was rather striking to know that there were people who didn’t move at all.
In today’s text, God comes to Abram and says, “Go, leave your country, your homeland.”
BACKGROUND
After Noah’s flood, Noah’s descendants were increasing and spreading over the earth. Noah had 3 sons; Shem, Ham, and Japheth. After the Tower of Babel, Genesis keeps its focus on Shem and his descendants. Genesis 11:10–25 is about the generations of Shem all the way down to Terah. And the first half of today’s passage (11:26–32) is about Terah’s family.
Terah had 3 sons: (1) Abram; (2) Nahor; (3) Haran. They lived in Ur. Ur was a city in Mesopotamia. But Terah and his entire family were leaving Ur. Where were they going? They were moving in the direction of Canaan (v. 31). So, did they arrive in Canaan? No. “When they came to Haran, they settled there” (v. 31).
What were they doing in Haran? Our text doesn’t say anything about it. But Joshua 24:2 says, “Long ago, your father lived beyond the Euphrates, Terah, the father of Abraham and Nahor; and they served other gods.” So, Terah’s family was probably involved in serving and worshiping idols and other gods both in Ur and in Haran.
So, this is the background of Genesis 12. That’s why 12:1 is striking and even shocking.
GOD CALLED
Abram, his father, and the family were not God-worshipers; they were idol-worshipers. But the LORD unexpectedly and directly spoke to Abram: 12:1 “Leave the place and go to the land that I will show you” (v. 1). Again, this is surprising because Abram and his father’s household were serving other gods and idols, not the LORD God. We have no evidence that Abram had served God and had a special relationship with him. But suddenly and unexpectedly, 12:1 says, “Now the LORD said to Abram.”
What this means is that God chose Abram. In this, we should remember two things: (1) it was God who chose Abram; (2) God chose Abram not because Abram deserved it but because God chose to do so.
This is important because it applies to all of us. When we think about ourselves, let’s also remember two things: (1) it was God who elected us (not we choosing God); (2) God elected us not because we deserved it but only because he chose to elect you and me “according to the purpose of his will” (Ephesians 1:5b).
The first command that he gave Abram was to leave his current place: “go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house” (v. 1). Abram was well settled in Haran. He was a wealthy man there. Life was probably good. But God entered his life and commanded him to leave where he was.
Also surprising is that God didn’t give Abram clear directions. Instead of telling him to “go to Palestine” or “go in such and such direction,” he simply said, Go “to the land that I will show you” (v. 1). So, at least at the moment of God commanding Abram, it was unclear in which direction Abram had to go. The only thing that was clear to him was that he must go—he shouldn’t remain in Haran.
GOD PROMISED
God didn’t just tell him to leave his home country. He promised to bless Abram. And it was such an unbelievably wonderful blessing. God promised blessings in 7 sentences (vv. 2–3):
- I will make of you a great nation (v. 2)
- I will bless you (v. 2)
- I will make your name great (v. 2)
- You will be a blessing (v. 2)
- I will bless you those who bless you (v. 3)
- I will curse those who dishonor you (v. 3)
- In you all the families of the earth shall be blessed (v. 3)
The first blessing was the hardest to believe (“I will make of you a great nation” (v. 2)) because Abram’s wife Sarai was not able to get pregnant (11:30). If God told Abram that he would give him a son, it would have been easier to believe. But now so abruptly, God promises that he will give him numerous descendants so that they will grow into the status of a nation.
More than that, God promised Abram that he would make Abram’s name great (v. 2). But how and in what way? e.g. The baseball player Ohtani san is now a world-famous athlete. And we can say that he brings honor and glory to his family name. When God said to Abram, “I will make your name great,” it meant that God would send someone amazing as one of his descendants. Who was he? Jesus Christ, the Messiah! He was to come through Abram’s family line. That’s what is meant here. Abram will be called the forefather of the Messiah (Galatians 3:16). In that sense, God would make his name great.
And just because Jesus Christ was coming through Abram’s family line, God said Abram himself was to become a blessing: “You will be a blessing” (v. 2). E.g. Let’s imagine that one of your grandchildren or great-grandchildren in the future will become a doctor and find a cure for cancer! That person is a blessing to the world. But at the same time, you, too, will be a blessing to the world because that person came through your family line. In the same way, Jesus Christ is a blessing to us, and therefore, Abram is a blessing, too.
One thing to note is that “You will be a blessing” (v. 2) is in fact in a command form (祝福となりなさい) in the Hebrew. So, the Japanese translation is correct. This is connected to the previous command “Go” (行きなさい; v. 1). In other words, God is commanding Abram to Go! So that he would become a blessing. God’s plan was not just to bless one individual man Abram but to bless the world through Abram’s offspring.
And because God would send the Messiah as Abram’s descendant, he would keep and protect Abram’s family line. Gen 12:3 shows that God is establishing a strong relationship with Abram: (1) those who bless you à I will bless them; (2) those who dishonor you à I will curse them (v. 3). God will take special care of Abram and his descendants. Again, the reason that God is doing this (v. 3) is (so that) “in you, all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” Why? Because God would send Jesus Christ as Abram’s descendant. That is why God says: in you (Abram), all the families and clans of the world will be blessed.
ABRAM BELIEVED AND OBEYED
Abram’s response was wonderful: v. 4 “So Abram went” (v. 4). Abram didn’t question God. There is no sign that Abram hesitated. He believed God. Abram obeyed the LORD. “So Abram went, as the LORD had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was 75 years old when he departed from Haran” (v. 4).
I am always amazed by Abram’s response to God’s command. We have two words to describe Abram’s act: (1) faith and (2) obedience. Heb 11:8 Hebrews 11:8 says, “By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.”
Let’s go back for a second to Abram’s family situation. We’ll know how remarkable his faith was. Terah had 3 sons. But there was no guarantee that his family would continue: (1) Haran, one of Terah’s sons, died in Haran; he left one son (Lot) and a daughter (Milkah); (2) another son Nahor didn’t move with Terah; Nahor just remained in Ur with his wife; (3) and there was Abram. But he had no children. His wife Sarai couldn’t have a child. So, at that moment, Lot (Haran’s only son) was the only hope for the family—he was the only one who could continue their family line.
However, God appears to Abram and says to him something crazy: Depart from where you are and go to the land I will show you; I will make of you a great nation. Abram’s natural response would be to say, Who are you? I don’t think I know you. Now, what are you talking about? Don’t you see my situation? My family is about to disappear. I can’t believe what you’re saying.
But according to Hebrews 11:8, Abram simply believed God and obeyed him—even though what the LORD said was too amazing to believe.
e.g. In 2014, my family was in South Korea. After many prayers and discussions, Lynn and I decided to come to Canada for me to study. One day, we told our children, Sue, and Paul, that we would leave Korea and move to Canada and live there for the next several years. Sue was in G5 and Paul G3. I gave them clear and enough information: (1) where we’re going; (2) when we’re leaving; (3) why we’re going; and (4) how long we’d be in Canada, etc. But they were still shocked. They were in tears because they loved their school, friends, grandparents, and everything in Korea. Even though I did my best to assure and comfort them and even though I gave them all the information, it was still hard for them to obey and follow their parents.
So, as you can see, what we see in Abram is truly amazing.
THESIS: BELIEVE GOD AND OBEY HIM!
Today’s text is important because it shows us the core of Christianity: it is all about believing and obeying.
Abram believed God and obeyed him.
(1) We, too, believe God. We confess our faith in God, and we trust him.
(2) We also make efforts to obey him in our lives. Obeying God isn’t always easy. But we do gladly because we trust our Father God. Obeying God sometimes means that we should depart from where we are. It may be a place of too much comfort; or it may be a place of our habitual sins. E.g. In Muslim countries (e.g. Azerbaijan), becoming a Christian means you’ll be abandoned and hated by your country, by your homeland, by your father’s house. Although there are not many, there are Muslims who leave their beloved family and country to follow God and Christ.
People mock and attack Christianity, saying, Christians don’t think; they just believe. That’s all they do. While we know their attacks are biased, we admit that we put faith first. We do so because it is God’s principle, not ours.
One of the mistakes of modern people is that they seem to argue that thinking is usually better than believing. However, they seem to ignore the fact that, without believing, human societies will collapse quickly.
The most important act of believing and obeying God: putting your faith in Jesus Christ.
It is believing what the Bible says about Jesus; and it is believing what Jesus says about himself.
- Jesus Christ is the Son of God sent into the world by the Father as the Messiah.
- He came in human flesh; he died in your place; he paid the price for all your sins.
- He’s resurrected from the grave and is now sitting at the right hand of God; he will return soon.
- We can now go to God and stand in his presence because we are in Christ.
You believe this and God considers you as perfectly righteous before his holy eyes.
Isn’t this unbelievably amazing news?
