創世記 42章
14 ヨセフは彼らに言った。「私が、おまえたちは回し者だと言ったのは、そのことだ。
15 次のことで、おまえたちを試そう。ファラオのいのちにかけて言うが、おまえたちの末の弟がここに来ないかぎり、おまえたちは決してここから出ることはできない。

Genesis 42
14 But Joseph said to them, “It is as I said to you. You are spies. 15 By this you shall be tested: by the life of Pharaoh, you shall not go from this place unless your youngest brother comes here. 16 Send one of you, and let him bring your brother, while you remain confined, that your words may be tested, whether there is truth in you. Or else, by the life of Pharaoh, surely you are spies.” 17 And he put them all together in custody for three days. 18 On the third day Joseph said to them, “Do this and you will live, for I fear God: 19 if you are honest men, let one of your brothers remain confined where you are in custody, and let the rest go and carry grain for the famine of your households, 20 and bring your youngest brother to me. So your words will be verified, and you shall not die.” And they did so. 21 Then they said to one another, “In truth we are guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he begged us and we did not listen. That is why this distress has come upon us.” 22 And Reuben answered them, “Did I not tell you not to sin against the boy? But you did not listen. So now there comes a reckoning for his blood.” 23 They did not know that Joseph understood them, for there was an interpreter between them. 24 Then he turned away from them and wept. And he returned to them and spoke to them. And he took Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes. 25 And Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain, and to replace every man’s money in his sack, and to give them provisions for the journey. This was done for them.
OPENING
His name is Park Chan-Wook. He’s Korean. He’s a film director. And I don’t like him.
I’ll tell you why. He is known as the master of Korean revenge dramas. And his best-known movies came in the early 2000s. They are called the “revenge trilogy.”
All these three movies were successful, and they made him one of the most popular movie directors in Korea. People enjoyed his revenge movies because they gave a sense of catharsis as the good characters avenged themselves against the bad. His movies are filled with blood and violence. But movie watchers liked the feeling that justice had been served.
However, I dislike his “eye-for-an-eye” philosophy in these films because they lead you into misery rather than happiness. Now, what we see in Joseph’s life is completely different from those garbage movies’ revenge stories. Joseph went through many years of suffering, but God made it clear to him that he was with him, and Joseph was able to endure his hard life.
CONTEXT
And finally, in Gen 41, God made him prime minister of Egypt when he was 30.
The first seven years were a time of great abundance. During these seven plentiful years, Joseph ordered that grain be stored up in every city. It was so much that they gave up counting it.
The great famine began when Joseph was about 37 years old and spread over all the land. A few years passed. But the famine was still widespread throughout all the world—not just in Egypt but also in the entire Mediterranean region. But there was stockpiled grain in Egypt because they had stored the surplus food during the first seven years of abundance.
The famine affected Canaan, too. Jacob and his sons ran out of food. So, Jacob sent his ten sons to Egypt. But he kept the youngest Benjamin at home. Jacob thought he had lost his beloved son Joseph about 30+ years ago. Benjamin was his favorite. He didn’t want to lose him. So, Benjamin stayed with Jacob, but the ten sons went down to Egypt to buy food.
Gen 42:6 says that Joseph held two titles. Politically, he was governor over the land; economically, he oversaw food distribution. Indeed, he was the most powerful man in Egypt except for Pharaoh.
And something amazing happened: “And Joseph’s brothers came and bowed themselves before him with their faces to the ground. Joseph saw his brothers and recognized them” (vv. 6b–7a).
Can you imagine Joseph’s shock when he saw his brothers?
But what’s also surprising is that his brothers didn’t recognize Joseph (v. 8). It was already 30+ years ago. Joseph was a teenage boy when he was sold to Egypt. But now he’s probably somewhere around 38–40 years old. And Joseph’s language and appearance have taken on Egyptian characteristics (v. 8). So, his brothers didn’t recognize Joseph.
And when his brothers “bowed themselves before him with their faces to the ground,” Joseph remembered his dreams (Gen 37), and at that moment, he realized that God accomplished them. Do you remember his dreams?
- Dream #1: They were harvesting and binding sheaves. And his brothers’ sheaves surrounded Joseph’s sheaf and bowed to it.
- Dream #2: In this dream, the sun, the moon, and eleven stars were bowing to Joseph.
The brothers had their “interview” with Joseph. And Joseph pressed them. Joseph accused them of spying. And the brothers were terrified and tried to defend themselves, saying that they only came to buy food. And they said, “We are all sons of one man. We are honest men . . . We . . . are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan, and behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is no more” (vv. 11, 13).
What they said about themselves was all true. But Joseph kept pushing them. That is today’s passage.
TEXT
Joseph kept pressing his brothers because he wanted to test them. Test them for what? He tested them to see if they had changed over the past 30+ years. And he told them to bring him their youngest brother. Joseph wanted to see his younger brother Benjamin. And Joseph put them in jail for three days (v. 17). After three days, Joseph made a new suggestion: one of them should remain here, and the rest of them must go and bring the youngest brother.
When Joseph was saying all this to them, he used the interpreter. While Joseph and the interpreter were still there, the brothers began to say to one another: We are guilty—This is God’s punishment for our sin against our brother Joseph (i.e. God was paying them back for their crime). And they didn’t know Joseph understood their language. When Joseph heard it (This is God’s punishment for our sin against our brother Joseph), “he turned away from them and wept” (v. 24a). But soon, Joseph regained his composure and returned to them. He held Simeon as collateral (i.e., hostage); Joseph gave them grain; he also gave them provisions for the journey home. Joseph was gracious to them. He really cared about his brothers, his father, and his younger brother Benjamin.
APPLICATIONS
If we give Joseph’s story to the movie director Park Chan-Wook, he will probably want to change it to a captivating revenge story. It will go something like this:
- For all those 30+ years, Joseph never forgave his brothers.
- When the brothers came to him, Joseph immediately bound them and put them in jail and probably killed them all (or made them slaves).
- Then he brought his father and Benjamin to Egypt and lived happily ever after.
But praise God that Joseph’s story is nothing like that. The story is full of God’s amazing work in Joseph’s life and Joseph’s remarkable trust in God. I think we can learn at least two lessons from today’s passage.
God can use suffering to bring us to repentance.
When Joseph was accusing them of being spies, the brothers denied it, of course. And they were right; they were not spies. They wanted Joseph to believe what they were saying. So, they said something about their family situation: (1) We’re from the land of Canaan; (2) We used to be 12 brothers (we all have the same father); (3) We are only 10 of us here because (i) The youngest is with our father and (ii) “one is no more” (v. 13). Everything they said was true. They believed Joseph was dead. So, they simply said, “one is no more.”
Now let’s think about their lives for the past 30+ years. What kind of lives do you think they lived after they sold their brother Joseph as a slave to Egypt? I think they had immense guilt at first. However, as time went on, they somehow suppressed their guilt, and it gradually disappeared. They successfully forgot about Joseph, and after so many years, they simply thought that he must have been dead in Egypt.
We are not sure how they handled their guilt. But it seems to me that they didn’t repent properly. I think so because in v. 21 they said they were being punished by God because of the sin they committed toward Joseph. They were afraid because they didn’t repent, and they still had guilt.
So, today’s text is important because, after all those years (30+), Joseph’s brothers are now finally being led into the place of true repentance. And God is using their encounter with the governor (Joseph) to force them to look into their guilty consciences.
Although they thought they were being punished by God for their crime, in fact, God was graciously calling them to repentance. So, it was the demonstration of God’s love toward them. When everything was fine and they were in comfort, they didn’t really think about what they had done to Joseph. But now God brings them into a difficult and terrifying situation and exposes their secret sin and guilt.
Like this, God sometimes uses suffering to bring you and me to repentance.
Please don’t get me wrong. Not every suffering is the result of your sin. However, when we suffer, in one sense, we need to realize that it’s a wonderful opportunity for us to slow down and think more deeply about our lives, especially about our relationships with God. Sufferings and trials that God sends our way can be a wakeup call to bring us back to a deeper relationship with our Father. Furthermore, they can also lead us into deeper humility and compassion toward other human beings.
So, that was the first lesson we should learn and remember.
God can sometimes allow us to grasp his providence
In v. 24a, we read, “Then he [Joseph] turned away from them and wept” (v. 24a).
When Joseph saw and heard his brothers realize their wrongdoing against him, Joseph turned away from them because his emotions were surging uncontrollably within him. Alone, Joseph wept.
We all know what Joseph’s life has been like: He was betrayed by his own brothers; he was sold to a foreign country as a slave; he was falsely accused by his master’s wife and put in jail; he helped the cupbearer, but he ignored and forgot about Joseph.
In all those afflictions, however, Joseph kept his trust in God. But Joseph didn’t fully know what was happening or what God was doing in and through his life.
Then he became the prime minister. And as God had shown him, there were 7 abundant years, and then the severe famine began. When the famine was so widespread and people from other nations were pouring into Egypt to buy food, did Joseph expect that his brothers would come down to Egypt to buy grain? Maybe.
But what we can clearly know is that when his brothers showed up,
- Joseph finally realized that his two dreams (ch. 37) came true.
- Joseph finally realized what God had been doing in his life over the past 30+ years: God’s plan was to save Jacob’s entire family. That’s why he made Joseph the governor of Egypt because God was going to bring them to Egypt and make them live there and increase in number.
So, Joseph wept—because, at last, he grasped the fullness of God’s providence, God’s mysterious plan for Joseph’s life.
CLOSING
At that very moment, God shed special light, and Joseph understood God’s work. Have you ever had such a moment? I’m sure many of you have. Praise God! God, by grace, can sometimes let you know his plans. However, please remember: Joseph kept his faith in God even when he had no clue of what God was doing in his life. So, what’s important to us is not whether or not you clearly know God’s plan for your life but whether you are determined to keep trusting God. Trusting God for what? Trusting that he will never abandon us and that he will bring us home.
