創世記 39章

Genesis 39
12 She caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me.” But he left his garment in her hand and fled and got out of the house. 13 And as soon as she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and had fled out of the house, 14 she called to the men of her household and said to them, “See, he has brought among us a Hebrew to laugh at us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice. 15 And as soon as he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried out, he left his garment beside me and fled and got out of the house.” 16 Then she laid up his garment by her until his master came home, 17 and she told him the same story, saying, “The Hebrew servant, whom you have brought among us, came in to me to laugh at me. 18 But as soon as I lifted up my voice and cried, he left his garment beside me and fled out of the house.” 19 As soon as his master heard the words that his wife spoke to him, “This is the way your servant treated me,” his anger was kindled. 20 And Joseph’s master took him and put him into the prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined, and he was there in prison. 21 But the LORD was with Joseph and showed him steadfast love and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison. 22 And the keeper of the prison put Joseph in charge of all the prisoners who were in the prison. Whatever was done there, he was the one who did it. 23 The keeper of the prison paid no attention to anything that was in Joseph’s charge, because the LORD was with him. And whatever he did, the LORD made it succeed.
OPENING
I started my military service in September 1995. It was for 26 months. The first six weeks were the boot camp. The boot camp is where you learn lots of new things to become a soldier. Do you know what the most difficult thing is when you’re at the boot camp? The biggest challenge there was the fear of being forgotten by your family and friends. It really felt like nobody saw me or cared about what I was going through at that moment. For example, my parents had no idea what I was doing there. My friends didn’t know and didn’t care that my life at the camp was hard. And I realized that there was only one who knew my situation—he didn’t just know what I was going through every day but, he was also with me. Throughout my six weeks at the camp, I really felt God’s presence. It was a challenging time, but it was a precious experience.
CONTEXT
Of course, I am nothing compared to Joseph. But I think Joseph felt the same way when he was first sold to Egypt as a slave. He was his father’s beloved son. But now he’s a slave in a foreign country.
What’s amazing about Joseph is that (1) God was with him; and (2) that changed and prospered Joseph.
To understand today’s passage well, we need some context.
Scene #1 (vv. 2–5): Joseph prospered in Potiphar’s house
Under God’s permission, Joseph was sold to a particular man’s house. His name was Potiphar. Joseph became one of Potiphar’s slaves. Who was Potiphar? He was one of the highest officers in Pharaoh’s kingdom. His official title was the “captain of the guard” (v. 1). I think Joseph was about 17–19 years old when he came to his house.
At Potiphar’s house, “the LORD was with Joseph” (v. 2). And what was the result? The Bible says that Joseph became a successful man. And Potiphar saw it. He saw what? Joseph’s Egyptian master saw two things: (1) “the LORD was with Joseph”; and (2) the LORD gave him success.
Potiphar was impressed. He liked Joseph. Potiphar trusted him. Joseph found favor in the eyes of Potiphar. And he made Joseph overseer of his entire house—i.e. Joseph was put in charge of everything.
And God acted again. The LORD blessed Potiphar’s house “for Joseph’s sake” (v. 5). God was keeping his promise to Abram in Gen 12:3 “in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
But Gen 39 says what followed Joseph’s success was seduction.
Scene #2 (vv. 6–10) Joseph was seduced.
I said Joseph was somewhere between 17 and 19 years old. He was in his prime, and the Bible says he was “handsome in form and appearance” (v. 6). And Potiphar’s wife attempted to seduce him. Potiphar’s wife’s name is not given; she is only known as “his master’s wife”) (v. 7). She liked Joseph. She wanted to lure him into her bed.
Her seductions were (1) direct and audacious (“lie with me”) (v. 7); (2) constant (“day after day”) (v. 10); and (3) aggressive (“she caught him by his garment”) (v. 12).
But Joseph’s response was consistent and always the same: (1) he refused (v. 8); (2) he clearly understood his position (a) toward Potiphar and his wife, and (b) toward God (v. 8); (3) he clearly knew the nature of such an act: (a) “great wickedness” (toward Potiphar); (b) sinning against God (v. 9); and again (4) he consistently refused (v. 10): (a) would not listen to her; (b) not to lie beside her; (c) not to be with her; and finally (5) he fled (vv. 11–12)
But one day, when he went into the house to do his work and none of the men of the house was there in the house, she caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me.” But he left his garment in her hand and fled and got out of the house (vv. 11–12).
This is the context of today’s passage.
TEXT
Scene #3 (vv. 11–20): Joseph was falsely accused
In good times, Joseph saw God was with him, and he faithfully responded to God’s presence. God gave him success. In bad times, too, Joseph believed his life was before God, and he faithfully kept himself from sinning.
But as we saw in today’s passage, what Joseph had to face was a false accusation: we read the wicked acts of Potiphar’s wife: (1) she took revenge on Joseph; (2) she blatantly lied (a) to her servants (vv. 14–15); and (b) to her husband Potiphar (vv. 17–19). I think she wanted Joseph dead. She wanted him dead because she was so upset. She wanted him dead also because she was afraid that Joseph would tell the truth to Potiphar.
And she thought and believed that her husband would kill him: 19 As soon as his master heard the words that his wife spoke to him, “This is the way your servant treated me,” his anger was kindled. Yes, Potiphar was furious. Everybody thought he’s going to kill Joseph. He was certainly capable of doing it. Nobody would stop it. He had power. But most of all, he had a perfect reason to kill him.
Scene #4 (vv. 21–23): Joseph prospered in the prison
However, even though the text doesn’t say it, we know we should insert this line before v. 20: the LORD was with Joseph, and Joseph’s master took him and put him into the prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined, and he was there in prison. Potiphar didn’t kill Joseph. Or more precisely, God didn’t give Potiphar permission to Joseph. Simply speaking, Potiphar couldn’t kill him.
When he was being put in jail, do you think Joseph defended himself, trying to tell him the truth? No, I didn’t do it. Trust me. I never did such a thing. Probably. But I am not sure. Personally, I think Joseph remained silent because (1) he knew it wouldn’t work; and (2) he wanted to keep her honor.
Do you think Potiphar believed what his wife told him? Probably he did. But personally, I think Potiphar didn’t believe her claim that Joseph attempted such a wicked thing because Potiphar had seen that the LORD God had been with Joseph. That’s why his Egyptian master didn’t kill him on the spot but put him in prison instead (v. 20).
Now Joseph was falsely accused and put in prison. But v. 21 says, But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him steadfast love.
Again, it’s surprising to see that God didn’t fix this false charge immediately. He didn’t appear to Potiphar and said to him, It’s your wife who is lying. Don’t touch Joseph. Let him go. You should punish your wife, not Joseph. But God worked in and through that false accusation: God led Potiphar to put Joseph in jail instead: But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him steadfast love (v. 21). Instead of immediately getting Joseph out of the prison and vindicating his honor, God kept him in the prison but “gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison” (v. 21).
And what happened in the prison is something we cannot explain unless we recognize God’s intervention: The prison keeper put Joseph in charge of all the prisoners in the prison (v. 22). Do you see the same thing happening here? (cf. Potiphar putting Joseph in charge of everything; the prison guard putting Joseph in charge of everything) And the reason is the same: because the Lord was with him. And whatever he did, the Lord made it succeed (v. 23)
- Joseph was sold to Potiphar’s house—but he was not a slave.
- Joseph was put in prison—but he was not a prisoner.
- Why? because the Lord was with him (v. 23)
APPLICATIONS
e.g. Did you know that, at a smaller scale, God seems to be doing the same thing in our lives? There are times when you feel life is treating you unfairly:
- You did everything for your health, but you are diagnosed with a terrible disease.
- You worked harder than your annoying colleague did, but he got the promotion, not you.
- You are doing your best to work hard and well and to get along with your colleagues at work, but you always encounter people who are against you.
- You did your best to raise your children in God’s way, but your children wander away from God.
I think Joseph’s story in Gen 39 can encourage you if that’s how you feel about your life now. We can see that God is teaching Joseph about one of the most important things about God himself. What is it? Gen 39 repeats the same teaching again and again: The LORD was with Joseph (vv. 2, 3, 21, 23).
What Joseph was learning through those challenges and trials was that what’s important and what really matters at the end is whether God is with him. That’s why Gen 39 describes Joseph both in good times and in bad times. Whether he is successful at Potiphar’s house or he is in prison with an unfair accusation, Joseph was fine as long as the LORD was with him.
- Joseph was sold to Potiphar’s house—but he was not a slave.
- Joseph was put in prison—but he was not a prisoner.
- Why? because the Lord was with him (v. 23)
Likewise, you may sometimes feel like you’re a slave or a prisoner in this world—but if the LORD is with you, no matter where you are, you are neither a slave nor a prisoner, but a child of God. Being free from slavery and being free from prison are good things. However, Gen 39 is teaching us that there is even a better thing than them: God’s presence in my life! How is he with us? How do you know that he is with you? God is with you through his Spirit and Word: (1) the Spirit of God (Holy Spirit) is living in you; (2) and he is illuminating your mind so that you understand and obey the Word of God—this is how God is with you. So, one who truly believes that God is with him—that person will surely read the Bible and pray. That’s how God leads his children. If you don’t do it, it’ll be difficult for you to recognize God’s presence in your life.
CLOSING
When Joseph was with his family, God was God.
When Joseph was sold to Potiphar’s house in Egypt, God was God.
When Joseph was put in prison, God was still God. And he was with Joseph anytime and anywhere. And this same God is with you. And God invites us to believe it.
