創世記 33章

1 And Jacob lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, Esau was coming, and four hundred men with him. So he divided the children among Leah and Rachel and the two female servants. 2 And he put the servants with their children in front, then Leah with her children, and Rachel and Joseph last of all. 3 He himself went on before them, bowing himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother. 4 But Esau ran to meet him and embraced him and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept . . . 16 So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir. 17 But Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built himself a house and made booths for his livestock. Therefore the name of the place is called Succoth. 18 And Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, on his way from Paddan-aram, and he camped before the city. 19 And from the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, he bought for a hundred pieces of money the piece of land on which he had pitched his tent. 20 There he erected an altar and called it El-Elohe-Israel.
CONTEXT
Twenty years ago, Jacob deceived both his father and brother Esau and stole his brother’s blessing. To save his own life from Esau’s anger, Jacob fled to Haran, to his uncle’s house. He was probably planning to stay there only for some time. But he ended up living there 20 years. He had two wives, eleven sons, and one daughter. He became rich. Finally, God told him to go back to his home country.
When he got closer to his home country, he heard that his brother Esau was coming with 400 men. He was afraid. He wrestled with God all night by the Jabbok river. God gave him a new name “Israel” and blessed him. The sun rose. Now the time has come. Jacob really has to meet Esau. This is the moment Jacob has been dreading for years,
TEXT
Jacob saw Esau and his four hundred men coming (v. 1). Well, his fear returned. His terror increased. To Jacob, it seemed certain that Esau was coming to kill Jacob. If not, why would he be coming with such many men?
Extremely afraid, Jacob had to do something. So, he divided his family into three group (vv. 1b–2): (1) Group 1 – the female servants + their children; (2) Group 2 – Leah + her children; (3) Group 3 – Rachel + Joseph. Why did he do that? Well, if Esau would really attack them, Jacob didn’t want his entire family to perish. So, if Esau attacked the first group, the rest two groups could flee and save their lives. Such was Jacob’s plan.
When you think about the division, you know it’s an interesting formation. He placed the servants and their sons on the forefront, Leah and the sons next, and he placed Rachel and Joseph last of all. It was because he loved Rachel and Joseph more than anyone else in the group. He didn’t really think about fairness here. His only concern was to protect Rachel and her son Joseph.
But God had a different plan. Although Jacob’s favorite son was Joseph, God’s everlasting plan was to send Jesus Christ through the line of Judah—Judah was Jacob’s fourth son and was born between Jacob and Leah, not Rachel. Jacob couldn’t care less about Judah. In such a moment of crisis, Jacob didn’t do much to protect Leah and her sons, Judah being one of them. However, God would protect Jacob and his sons, especially Judah, not Joseph, because, in God’s time, King David would be born in the tribe of Judah, and ultimately, God will send Jesus Christ the Messiah, the Son of God, through the line Judah.
But we see a positive change in Jacob: He now seems to be more courageous than before. He seems to have overcome his own fear of his brother. How do we know this? Because Jacob didn’t stay or hide behind his wives and children. Rather, this time, he himself went on before them (v. 3). It was almost like Jacob was offering himself as a victim or a sacrifice to save his own family. He was really acting like a hero, responsible leader and father. And we know how and why he changed—this courage was given to him through and after his intense encounter with God at the Jabbok river (wrestling in Gen 32).
And Jacob went to meet his brother Esau, bowing himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother (v. 3). He bowed himself to the ground not just a couple of times but seven times! It means that Jacob was showing complete submission to his brother. Jacob was probably thinking (and praying), If Esau attacks me and I should die here, so be it. But my family will have time to flee. O LORD God, please help!
And an amazing thing happened: But Esau ran to meet him and embraced him and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept (v. 4).
I really think (1) Esau was still angry about Jacob even after all those years; (2) so Esau left Edom with his 400 men to get even with Jacob by destroying him. And I really believe, in such a short time, in a miraculous way, God changed Esau’s heart. When Esau was approaching Jacob and he was anxious to kill him, God powerfully worked on Esau’s heart, and he became a completely different person when he actually got to meet Jacob: (a) he embraced Jacob; (b) he gave him kisses; (c) and both wept together.
I’m sure Esau’s 400 men were puzzled by the unexpected sight. It was all because of God’s special favor for Jacob. Do you remember what God had said to Laban when he pursued Jacob? He said, Do not harm Jacob. Don’t do anything to him. God has done the same thing to Esau for Jacob. God transformed the anger in Esau’s heart into love and forgiveness. It was God. It was his amazing grace for Jacob. And that’s why Jacob said to Esau, seeing your face is like seeing the face of God, now that you have received me favorably (v. 10).
And that is one important thing we need to learn about our God: God is holy and yet gracious toward us sinners. So, when we go to God, we go trembling. Why? Because he is holy, and we are not. But God has received us favorably only on one ground: not upon our performances but upon his own unending mercy fully expressed in Jesus Christ.
Esau encouraged Jacob to return to Edom with him. Would you like to go? Esau was a successful, powerful, and rich man in Edom. So, if you follow him and stay with him there, your life will be pretty comfortable and luxurious. In Edom, no one will bother you because you’re a brother of this powerful man Esau. Let me ask again: would you like to go with Esau?
But Jacob had a different idea, so he politely declined. In v. 14, Jacob promised he would follow Esau to Seir (Edom). But in v. 17, Jacob journeyed to Succoth and then to Shechem.
Can we blame Jacob for deception again? I don’t think we can. Rather, it was Jacob’s decision of faith. Esau’s main problem was that he didn’t know God and he didn’t intend to worship God. So, Jacob knew he would not get along with Esau who didn’t know God. Jacob thought it was not a good idea to follow Esau to Edom—because Esau was not a worshiper of God. Plus, Jacob still didn’t trust Esau fully.
So, after Esau returned to Edom, Jacob took his family and turned to the west: Jacob journeyed to Succoth and built himself a house and made booths for his livestock. Therefore, the name of the place is called Succoth (v. 17). Probably Jacob rested in Succoth for a few days before a long journey. Jacob then moved again: And Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, on his way from Paddan-aram, and he camped before the city (v. 18).
Why did Jacob go to Shechem? Shechem was the city where Abraham built an altar before God appeared to him and promised him the land of Canaan (12:6–7). And Jacob shows his trust in God’s promise that he would give that land to Abraham and his descendants. Jacob bought a plot of ground: And from the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, he bought for a hundred pieces of money the piece of land on which he had pitched his tent (v. 19). And he began to settle in.
But the most important thing he did was that he worshiped God in Shechem. This is amazing because we see the same act of worship in three men: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. All Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: whenever the LORD God gave them any place or when they arrived at a certain place, “they gave themselves up to the pure worship of God in prayers and other acts of devotion” (Calvin).
Abraham (Gen 12:6–8)
- Abraham left Haran when he was 75
- He set forth to go to the land of Canaan
- God appeared to him when he was approaching Shechem
- The LORD GOD said (12:7): To your offspring I will give this land
- So, Abraham built an altar to the LORD, who had appeared to him.
Isaac (Gen 26)
- There was a famine in the land. The people were starving. Isaac wanted to move down to Egypt. But God warned against it. So, Isaac and his family obeyed and settled in Gerar (26:6). Isaac quietly left the land and moved up to Beersheba, and the LORD appeared to him, and he said
- I am the God of Abraham your father. Fear not, for I am with you and will bless you and multiply your offspring for my servant Abraham’s sake (v. 24)
- So, Isaac’s fear and anxiety began to disappear, not because the situation got better but because he realized that God was for him and with him! And that was just enough.
- So, he built an altar there and called upon the name of the Lord and pitched his tent there (v. 25)
Jacob (Gen 33)
- Jacob arrived in Shechem
- There he erected an altar and called it El-Elohe-Israel (v. 20)
- El (God) – Elohe Israel (the God of Israel): Do you remember Jacob’s new name “Israel” (32:28)? Jacob is now calling God “God of Israel.” He is declaring that the land belongs to himself on the basis of the promise of the faithful God.
APPLICATIONS
God is gracious
As some of you know, I turned fifty last year. Somehow for the last several months, I’ve been thinking about my past a lot—not just about some years back but also about my childhood, teenage years, university time, etc. I don’t know—it just feels different. I rarely thought about those times. But these past few months, I spent much time thinking about my past life.
And recently I came to a certain conclusion about my life. Would you like to hear it? OK, let me tell you: The more I think about my past, the more I realize that God has always been gracious to me. I didn’t know back then. I was such an arrogant sinner for too long a time. But God always dealt with me with grace and mercy, not with his holy and righteous judgment. That’s why I am alive today. If he had not been gracious to me, I would not even have been able to meet and get to know you. So, I praise God forever for his grace toward me and patience with me.
How about you? As of today, what’s your understanding of God? Who is God to you? How does he deal with you?
What we see in Gen 33 is God’s crazy grace toward this man Jacob. Let me remind you again: Esau’s anger toward his brother Jacob was not unfounded, and there’s a reason why. Twenty years ago, Jacob deceived his father and his brother to steal his once-in-a-lifetime blessing. It changed their lives forever. Esau wanted to get even with Jacob. That’s why he was coming with his 400 men to meet Jacob.
But we all saw what God did to Esau for Jacob: God changed Esau’s heart instantly; Esau’s heart was moved by the power of God. God turned Esau’s anger and hatred into love and forgiveness. How did Esau become so kind and forgiving toward his brother Jacob? It was because Esau’s heart was in the hand of the gracious God. God kept Esau from doing any harm to Jacob, and it was God’s grace toward his servant Jacob.
Trust him.
And how did Jacob respond to this gracious God? He trusted God.
Esau wanted Jacob to go with him to Edom. Comfortable and rich life was awaiting him there in Edom. But Jacob trusted God and decided not to depend on his twin brother Esau. So, instead of following and staying with Esau, Jacob turned to the west and journeyed to the land that God told him to return to—to the land of Canaan, the land of God’s promise.
CLOSING
Of course, Jacob is not perfect. But we see Jacob who is so different from Jacob twenty years ago. What changed him? It was God. God’s unending grace and patience changed him. Finally, Jacob was able to see that his entire life had been in God’s gracious hand. So, he decided to trust and follow God, not to go with Esau and live with worldly luxuries.
