創世記 32章
22 その夜、彼は起き上がり、二人の妻と二人の女奴隷、そして十一人の子どもたちを連れ出し、ヤボクの渡し場を渡った。

格闘：神の祝福の変装

Genesis 32
22 The same night he arose and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. 23 He took them and sent them across the stream, and everything else that he had. 24 And Jacob was left alone. And a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day. 25 When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he touched his hip socket, and Jacob’s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. 26 Then he said, “Let me go, for the day has broken.” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” 27 And he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.” 28 Then he said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.” 29 Then Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?” And there he blessed him. 30 So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, “For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered.” 31 The sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, limping because of his hip. 32 Therefore to this day the people of Israel do not eat the sinew of the thigh that is on the hip socket, because he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip on the sinew of the thigh.
CONTEXT
Now time has come for Jacob to see his brother Esau. And we know Jacob is dreading it. Although 20 years had passed, Jacob was still afraid of seeing his brother again. But this time, Jacob couldn’t avoid it. He had to face it. Esau had been living in the country of Edom. He and his family arrived at the Jabbok river. Jacob sent messengers to Esau. And it was known to Jacob that Esau was coming up from Edom to meet Jacob with 400 men!
When your brother is coming to meet and he is coming with 400 men, there are two possibilities: (1) he may want to throw a huge welcome party for you with those men; or (2) he is going to destroy you with his men. Jacob leaned toward (2): he thought Esau was coming to kill him. So, “in great fear and distress” (32:7), Jacob divided the group into two. And he prayed to God to save him and his family from Esau. At the same time, he did his best to appease Esau’s anger by preparing lots of gifts (vv. 13–21). But even with those gifts, he was still terrified. He was so scared that we don’t see him any bravery. He sent the gifts first; then he sent his wives, two female servants, and his eleven sons—they crossed the Jabbok river. And surprisingly, Jacob stayed behind (vv. 22–23); he didn’t cross the river. His fear of Esau always kept him in the rear. He was always “behind something or somebody” (V. Hamilton). So, Jacob was left alone (v. 24), and something remarkable happened that night. That’s today’s text.
TEXT
Suddenly, Jacob was locked in a wrestling match with a man. And that wrestling lasted not just one hour but all night “until the breaking of the day” (v. 24). We know Jacob was there. But who was this another man? Who was he? Where did he come from? Why were they wrestling all of a sudden?
The man was God himself. He was not a human being but a divine being in human form. The man was the LORD God. We know it because Jacob later recognized he was God (v. 30).
Another shocking thing that happened was that the man was not prevailing against Jacob because Jacob was strong. So, when the sun was rising, the man touched—or more precisely, struck—Jacob’s hip socket, and “Jacob’s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him” (v. 25); Jacob’s thigh was dislocated. Why did the man do such a thing? Why did he strike Jacob’s hip socket? We do not know why.
And the man wanted to leave (v. 26). The day was breaking, and Jacob realized two things: (1) the man was not an ordinary human being but God himself in human form; (2) Jacob realized that the man didn’t come and wrestle with Jacob for the purpose of destroying or killing Jacob. And Jacob didn’t want to let him go: But Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me” (v. 26). Jacob was clinging to the man. Jacob was clinging to God for his blessing. And the man turned to Jacob and said, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob” (v. 27). Please do not think that the man asked Jacob his name because he didn’t know it. Of course, the man knew Jacob because the man was God. Then the man said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed” (v. 28).
The Hebrew “Israel” can mean two things: (1) “You have struggled with (or fought with) God”; or (2) “God fights” (or “God will rule”). But according to v. 28, God has given him this new name “Israel” because Jacob struggled with God and with men, Jacob has prevailed.
Let’s be honest, however. Do you really think Jacob prevailed the man? No. It can’t be true. Then why is the wrestling described in such a way in today’s text that we believe the man couldn’t prevail Jacob because Jacob was too strong? Please don’t be mistaken to think that Jacob prevailed God. Israel doesn’t mean Jacob is the victor over God.
Rather, God appeared to Jacob in human form, and it was God’s answer to Jacob’s desperate prayer: “Please deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for I fear him, that he may come and attack me, the mothers with the children. But you said, ‘I will surely do you good, and make your offspring as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude’” (vv. 11–12)
We don’t know why and how the man and Jacob started wrestling all night. But I think God appeared to Jacob that night and gave him a chance to express his desperation and absolute dependence on God. And when Jacob realized that the man was God, he asked for God’s blessing, and God gave him a new and more honorable name “Israel,” saying, you have striven with God and prevailed.
Imagine a young father wrestling with his six-year-old son. The son and his dad are having a great time with lots of fun. No dad would use his full force to win the match, would he? I think that, at the end of the match, the dad would just let his son win! And after that, the dad would be extremely proud of his son and says to him, “Wow, you’re such a strong man. I’ll call you Mr. Strong. Well done! You’ve prevailed!” We all know who is stronger. But we all know why the dad did it.
And just like this young dad, God is in fact transferring the glory of his power to Jacob (Calvin). And there he [God] blessed him [Jacob] (v. 29). 30 So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, “For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered.” 31 The sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, limping because of his hip.
APPLICATIONS
Wrestling: God’s Blessing in Disguise
As I said, we don’t know why and how both men got into a wrestling match. But one thing certain is that Jacob didn’t know that it was God that he was wrestling with. He didn’t know it until the day was breaking.
Don’t you think we sometimes do it in our lives? Just think about those things that have been bothering you. When those problems appear to be too huge, don’t you feel like you’re going through a dark night? Just like Jacob, you feel like you’re alone. You cry out to God in prayers. And next moment, you find yourself wrestling with a man. And you wonder, What in the world is going on in my life?
That’s what Jacob was going through: (1) terrified by his brother Esau; (2) he cried out to God for help; (3) he sent lots of gifts to Esau to appease him; (4) he sent his own family because he was hoping that Esau’s anger will be lessened when he saw Jacob’s wives and sons. Jacob did his best. Now he’s left alone in the darkness, anxious to see God answer his prayers. And out of nowhere, this man appeared, and instead of solving all Jacob’s problems, the man began a wrestling match with Jacob. Jacob didn’t pray for a wrestling match!
But do you see that his wrestling match was God’s gracious answer to Jacob’s prayers? (1) God appeared to Jacob in human form and Jacob saw God face to face—it alone was an amazing act of God’s grace. Sometimes, I feel I can endure anything if I see God; (2) God invited Jacob into wrestling so that Jacob could cry out to God for help with all his heart, strength, and soul. God led him into this wrestling match all night and gave him strength and taught him what it meant to cling to God. And Jacob realized all this when the dark night disappeared and the day broke. Jacob finally realized God was with him through the dark night. And God didn’t stop there. He changed Jacob’s name to Israel.
Jacob’s New Name: Israel
Jacob was named “Jacob” because he grabbed the heel of his twin brother Esau when he was born. The meaning of Jacob was “heel-grabber.” It also means “supplanter”—one who steals other people’s things. So “Jacob” was a bit dishonorable name. But God now changes his name to a much more honorable name: Isarel. He did so not because Jacob was strong enough to prevail against God but only because God was faithful to keep his promises for him.
CLOSING
And did you know that God has also changed our names? Our names used to be “enemies.” But he has changed it to “children”—not because we’re good enough to be called so but because God chose us in his Son Jesus Christ and accepted us into his holy household.
