創世記 30章
22 神はラケルに心を留められた。神は彼女の願いを聞き入れて、その胎を開かれた。

Genesis 30
22 Then God remembered Rachel, and God listened to her and opened her womb. 23 She conceived and bore a son and said, “God has taken away my reproach.” 24 And she called his name Joseph, saying, “May the LORD add to me another son!” 25 As soon as Rachel had borne Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, “Send me away, that I may go to my own home and country. 26 Give me my wives and my children for whom I have served you, that I may go, for you know the service that I have given you.” 27 But Laban said to him, “If I have found favor in your sight, I have learned by divination that the LORD has blessed me because of you. 28 Name your wages, and I will give it.”
OPENING
My father-in-law went to be with the Lord in 2019. Whenever I think about him, I am so deeply thankful to God. He always loved me and trusted me. He never rejected me. He was always supportive of me. He really taught me how to make an excellent father-in-law. So, when my daughter gets married and I have a son-in-law, I will try to emulate my father-in-law. I look forward to seeing him again in heaven.
When I was studying Gen 29–30 for today’s sermon, I saw another father-in-law. His name was Laban, and he was Jacob’s father-in-law. And he was so radically different from my own father-in-law. Laban was a wicked man. And Jacob lived with him for twenty years! No doubt that Jacob’s twenty years under Laban were a challenging time.
Let’s have a look at what really happened in Gen 29–30.
CONTEXT
We all know what happened in Gen 27–28. Rebekah and Jacob plotted together, deceived both Isaac and Esau, and Jacob stole Isaac’s blessing. No doubt Esau was angry. He was so upset that he was determined to kill his younger brother Jacob. So, the parents, Isaac and Rebekah, had to send Jacob away. They told him to go to Paddan-aram to Laban (Rebekah’s brother; Jacob’s uncle). So, Jacob fled and went toward Haran. Jacob was in despair, but God appeared to him and blessed him again, and Jacob named that place “Bethel,” meaning “house of God.”
TEXT
Now, arriving in Haran, Jacob saw a well. He saw the shepherds and the flocks from Haran at the well. Jacob asked them if they knew Laban. They knew him. When he was talking to them, Laban’s daughter Rachel came to the well. Jacob wept before her and introduced himself to her. Rachel ran and told her father Laban. Jacob told Laban everything. Jacob began to stay at Laban’s.
Laban hired him and asked, “what shall your wages be”? (29:15). Laban had two daughters, Leah and Rachel. Jacob asked for his younger daughter Rachel: “Jacob loved Rachel. And he said, ‘I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel’” (29:18). Laban was Jacob’s uncle, and so Rachel and Leah were Jacob’s cousins. However, marriage among cousins (endogamy) was a normal occurrence in the ancient Near East (Faithlife). So Jacob worked for Laban for seven years. After seven years, Jacob asked for Rachel. But Laban gave him Leah instead and made him work for another seven years for Rachel.
Jacob loved Rachel more than Leah (29:30). But the Lord was gracious to Leah, and she gave birth to sons: (1) Reuben; (2) Simeon; (3) Levi; (4) Judah. Rachel envied Leah. So, she gave her servant Bilhah to Jacob to have a child: (5) Dan; (6) Naphtali. Leah also gave her servant Zilpah to Jacob: (7) Gad; (8) Asher. Leah herself conceived again: (9) Issachar; (10) Zebulun; she also bore a daughter Dinah. Finally, Rachel conceived: 22 Then God remembered Rachel, and God listened to her and opened her womb. 23 She conceived and bore a son and said, “God has taken away my reproach.” 24 And she called his name Joseph, saying, “May the Lord add to me another son!”
So, during these 7 years, God gave Jacob eleven sons and one daughter through Leah, Bilhah, Zilpah, and finally Rachel. By now, you know that these eleven sons (with Benjamin added later) were the ancestors of the twelve tribes of Israel.
And 25 As soon as Rachel had borne Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, “Send me away, that I may go to my own home and country. 26 Give me my wives and my children for whom I have served you, that I may go, for you know the service that I have given you.”
So, after 14 years, Jacob realized that it was time to leave and return to Canaan (to Beersheba). So, he asked Laban for permission to leave (v. 25).
Why did he want to leave Laban and return to his own home and country? (1) Probably, he was hoping that his brother Esau’s anger had disappeared after such a long time; however, (2) what really led him to desire to go back to Canaan was his memory of God’s promise.
Fourteen years ago in Bethel, in Jacob’s dream, God promised, “Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you” (28:15). So, this promise of God was ever fresh in Jacob’s memory. The land of Canaan had been granted to him. Jacob knew he didn’t deserve such a blessing. But it was God’s promise. Jacob believed it. And that finally gave him a desire to return.
At the beginning, I compared my own father-in-law and Laban, Jacob’s uncle/father-in-law and said Laban was a wicked man. So, would he let Jacob, his wives, and the children go? 27 But Laban said to him, “If I have found favor in your sight, I have learned by divination that the Lord has blessed me because of you. 28 Name your wages, and I will give it.”
Surprisingly enough, Laban quickly admits that he has become rich and that he is blessed by the LORD God because of Jacob. What Laban said to Jacob reminds us of the original promise of God to Abram when he called him. What did God say to Abram? “in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed” (Gen 12:3). God promised Abram that his descendants will turn into a great nation and the nations of the earth would be blessed by it. Abraham’s son was Isaac. Isaac’s son was Jacob. And now Laban admits that he has been blessed by Jacob and his faithful work: God gave Laban material blessings through Jacob. So, this is an example of God’s fulfilment of his promise to Abraham.
Laban said he came to know that he had been blessed by God because of Jacob “by divination” (v. 27). What is divination? It is the practice of seeking knowledge of the future or something that we don’t know by supernatural means (e.g. witchcraft, magic, fortune telling, etc.). Laban was not a God-worshiper. He was an idol worshiper. He had multiple household gods that he served. Although Laban said in v. 28 “Name your wages, and I will give it,” he had no intention to do so. We’ll see it next time. But on the surface at least, even wicked Laban could not deny (1) that Jacob was a faithful worshiper of God and (2) that his material blessings came from God through Jacob.
APPLICATION: Trust God Who Keeps Us Trusting (cf. John Piper)
Now, let’s go back to 14 years ago.
- When Jacob arrived in Haran and met Rachel and her father Laban, he fell in love with Rachel and wanted to marry her. But his father-in-law Laban told him to work for him for seven years to marry Rachel! OK, fair enough. Jacob served Laban with joy and gladness. He loved Rachel so much that the seven years “seemed to him but a few days because of the love he had for her” (29:20).
- After those 7 years, Jacob was excited because he was finally marrying Rachel. But Laban cheated him and gave him Leah, Rachel’s older sister. And Laban requested that Jacob work for another seven years for Rachel, which he did. So, Jacob ended up working for Laban for 14 years. That’s a long space of time. Nobody wants to work with a wicked and greedy boss. Laban cheated Jacob numerous times and changed his wages 10 times. It is shocking that Laban was Jacob’s father-in-law, but he never stopped abusing his son-in-law.
- Jacob ended up having two wives. Jacob didn’t like the first wife Leah. He only loved the second wife Rachel. But Rachel was barren. Leah bore four sons. And Rachel was extremely jealous. And their female servants (Bilhah and Zilpah) were involved in producing Jacob’s sons. So, you can see that their so-called family relations were quite bitter and messy. Imagine: Jacob got 11 sons from 4 women. Do you think you can handle it? I got 2 children from 1 woman 😊 Can you imagine how chaotic and bitter it can be to have 11 sons (+1 daughter) from 4 different mothers?
So, no doubt Jacob’s many years under Laban were not easy. Jacob was barely keeping his head above water.
But God kept him there.
e.g. I was in G7 in 1987. I entered a small middle school in Seoul, South Korea. I loved my school, my teacher, and my classmates. It was a happy time. All of a sudden, my dad said we were moving to a different city—to Kwangju, about 4 hours by car to the south from Seoul. I was devastated. But we had to move. So, I said goodbye to my Seoul classmates and went to Kwangju. And I absolutely hated everything in Kwangju. The school was terrible. My teacher was bad. My classmates didn’t like me. They spoke in a different dialect. They mocked me. They bullied me. And I didn’t want to live. So, I kept asking God to take my life. I kept praying to God that he would move me back to Seoul or kill me. But God kept me there—not just one year but all the way until my high school graduation. He didn’t move me back to Seoul.
Reading Gen 29–30, we can see that God kept Jacob in that challenging situation for so many years. So, you may wonder why God did so. I don’t have an answer to that.
However, if you read it and think about it carefully, you can see that God was doing several things for Jacob in that situation. One of those things was that God was slowly and yet steadily increasing the number of Abraham’s descendants. Think about the time when Jacob arrived in Haran. He was alone. He was single. He had nothing. But for the next 14 years—even though God kept him under Laban, and he had to suffer under his wicked father-in-law—Jacob established his family and had 11 sons who would carry his name and later became the 12 tribes of the nation of Israel. So, indeed, God was accomplishing his promise to Abraham: “I will make of you a great nation” (Gen 12:2). Even without Jacob realizing it, God formed the basis of Israel during those 14 years in Haran.
Another important thing God did for Jacob was that he protected Jacob from Laban! (1) Laban didn’t believe in Jacob’s God (like many non-believers of today’s world); (2) he worshiped multiple idols (he had household gods); (3) he was greedy, wicked, abusive, and deceptive; (4) his greed and wickedness was so great that he even abused and cheated his own son-in-law, Jacob. So, commenting on Laban, John Calvin says, “the insane wickedness of Laban.” However, what Gen 29–30 shows us today is that, even though Jacob was exposed to the violence of Laban, he could not hurt or devour Jacob completely because God protected Jacob as he had promised: “Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you” (Gen 28:15).
Sometimes we find it hard to make sense of our lives. I believe Jacob felt the same way, serving Laban for 14 years. He may have felt like he was living in a jail with no hope. Of course, he knew and remembered God’s promise. But 14 years were a long time—long enough for him to feel like God has forgotten him.
However, Jacob didn’t forget the promise of God for him. Throughout those 14 years, while he had to suffer, he (1) cherished God’s promise and (2) lived and worked faithfully for Laban and for God. Of course, it doesn’t mean that Jacob’s life was without trials and suffering. Rather, he had many afflictions. But he never fully gave up on his trust in God. And God (1) kept his promise and (2) kept Jacob under his protection.
In this world, we are always exposed to the threats and attacks of wolves. And God can put (or keep) us in difficult situations. But Gen 29–30 tells us we have no reason to fear—because (even when God keeps us in afflictions) (1) he will keep his promise and (2) he will keep us under his protection.
So, let’s trust God even when life doesn’t make sense. I want to urge all of us to trust God even when we don’t understand everything.
