創世記 27章
30 イサクがヤコブを祝福し終わり、ヤコブが父イサクの前から出て行くとすぐに、兄のエサウが猟から戻って来た。

30 As soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, when Jacob had scarcely gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, Esau his brother came in from his hunting. 31 He also prepared delicious food and brought it to his father. And he said to his father, “Let my father arise and eat of his son’s game, that you may bless me.” 32 His father Isaac said to him, “Who are you?” He answered, “I am your son, your firstborn, Esau.” 33 Then Isaac trembled very violently and said, “Who was it then that hunted game and brought it to me, and I ate it all before you came, and I have blessed him? Yes, and he shall be blessed.” 34 As soon as Esau heard the words of his father, he cried out with an exceedingly great and bitter cry and said to his father, “Bless me, even me also, O my father!” 35 But he said, “Your brother came deceitfully, and he has taken away your blessing.” 36 Esau said, “Is he not rightly named Jacob? For he has cheated me these two times. CONTEXT
What we have read today is quite disturbing, isn’t it? Both the father Isaac and the son Esau are in shock and anger. And this is what happened. Isaac was quite old (137 years old). He thought he was going to die soon. And he called his favorite son Esau (the firstborn). He told him to hunt game and prepare delicious food for him so that he may eat it and bless Esau.
And Rebekah was listening when Isaac was speaking to Esau. When Esau went out to hunt, Rebekah came up with a terrible plan to deceive his husband and steal his blessing for her favorite son Jacob. Her plan was to cook something quickly and send in Jacob instead and have him impersonate Esau so that Isaac will bless Jacob, not Esau. How did she think of such an evil plan? Isaac was old, and “his eyes were dim so that he could not see” (27:1). So, that’s one of the reasons that she believed her crazy plan would work. When she shared this plot with Jacob, he was afraid at first. But Rebekah insisted. And Jacob agreed to join.
Jacob went to the flock and brought his mother two good young goats; Rebekah then quickly prepared delicious food (Isaac’s favorite food); Rebekah then put one of Esau’s garments on Jacob; Rebekah put the skins of the young goats on the hands and the neck of Jacob to cover his soft skin; Then Jacob went in with the food; When Isaac asked who he was, Jacob lied: “I am Esau your firstborn” (v. 19); Isaac was a little bit hesitant; so he touched and smelled Jacob; And Isaac says something really stupid: “The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau” (v. 22); Isaac asked the final question, “Are you really my son Esau?” (v. 24), to which Jacob lied again, “I am.” And Isaac ended up blessing Jacob (vv. 27–29).
TEXT
“As soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, when Jacob had scarcely gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, Esau his brother came in from his hunting” (v. 30).
Again, today’s text (vv. 30–38) is [upsetting/disturbing/heart-breaking]. Esau obeyed his father. He went out and hunted a game. He came home and quickly made his father’s favorite food. What a good son! But he went in only to find that his younger brother had come before him and stolen all the blessings.
Isaac said to Esau, “Your brother [Jacob] came deceitfully, and he has taken away your blessing” (v. 35). So, to make a long story short, Jacob did two terrible things: (1) he deceived his own father; (2) he stole his own brother’s blessing.
Another terrible thing was that there was no blessing left for Esau (vv. 36–37). It was over. “And Esau lifted up his voice and wept” (v. 38).
Now, the whole family seems to be falling apart. But let me ask you this question. Who do you think is the fundamental cause of this chaos? Some may want to blame Rebekah (and Jacob). But I think it was Isaac who started all this.
INTERPRETATION: Isaac
He was 137 years old. He thought his death was coming.
But when we see Isaac try to choose and bless the firstborn Esau (not Jacob), we can see that Isaac was not really walking with God at his old age. He wasn’t obedient to God.
First, when he asked Esau to hunt a game and make food, he only mentioned himself (for me, me, me); he never mentioned God’s covenant or command.
Second, Isaac ignored God’s election of Jacob (Gen 25:23). Both Rebekah and Isaac knew it was Jacob that God had chosen, not Esau. But despite that, Isaac attempted to give his fatherly blessing to Esau. It was displeasing to God.
Next, there was clear evidence that Esau was not God’s chosen; in Gen 25:29–34, we learned that Esau sold his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of stew. Esau was a such a person who couldn’t care less about God.
Another evidence that God didn’t elect Esau was that, when Esau turned 40, he took pagan women as his wives (Gen 26:34–35).
So, Isaac clearly knew God had not chosen Esau. But still, Isaac wanted to give his final and exhaustive blessing to Esau. This act of disobedience of Isaac threw the entire family into a horribly messy situation.
INTERPRETATION: Rebekah
How about his wife Rebekah? Did she do everything right? Not at all. She did an evil thing by completely deceiving her own husband for her favorite son Jacob.
Her conspiracy to deceive Isaac was a terrible one and cannot be justified. And there is no evidence that Rebekah did it for God.
Just like Isaac, Rebekah, too, knew about God’s eternal election (25:23). What was her fault in Gen 27? Her wrong was that she didn’t put enough trust in God’s plans and promises.
She was perhaps anxious and desperate when she heard the conversation between Isaac and Esau. She thought, if Isaac ended up blessing Esau, then everything was over. So, she wanted to stop it. Why? For God’s election plan to stand? I doubt that. It seems to me that she simply wanted it her way: Jacob was her favorite and she wanted Jacob to be blessed, not Esau.
But if God had chosen Jacob (25:23), what’s Isaac’s blessing? Isaac’s words of blessing cannot affect or change God’s election of Jacob. But Rebekah didn’t seem to believe that. So, instead of waiting patiently, she decided to act on her own to change the course of things: I will keep this from happening even if that means I will end up deceiving my own husband.

INTERPRETATION: Esau
As for Esau, we don’t need to say much.
Esau didn’t care about God and his covenant. That’s why he simply sold his birthright to his younger brother only for a bowl of stew (Gen 25). And he found wives among pagan women (Gen 26). And Esau’s wives “made life bitter for Isaac and Rebekah” (26:35).
INTERPRETATION: Jacob
How about Jacob? Jacob was complicit in his mother’s evil plan. Or more than that: he was the main actor in the plot.
We are surprised by Jacob’s blatant and bold deception of his own father. He impersonates his own brother and tricks Isaac to bless him.
This deceptive act of Jacob cannot be justified. This was a sin before God.
INTERPRETATION: The Result
Now, what was the result of all this? The entire family was collapsing.
Isaac’s blessing plan completely failed. He thought he blessed Esau, but he ended up blessing Jacob. He was shocked to realize that he had been deceived by his own wife and son. It is a terrible feeling, isn’t it? What’s even more horrible was that Isaac lived almost 43 years after this event before he died at the age of 180. He thought he was going to die soon, but he had to live 43 years more grieving about this mistake.
Esau was furious with all his family members. Esau was angry with his father Isaac. Of course, Esau hated his mother Rebekah. But his anger toward Jacob was so great that he said, “I will kill my brother Jacob” (v. 41).
So, what did Rebekah do? Rebekah said to Jacob, “your brother Esau comforts himself about you by planning to kill you. Now therefore, my son, obey my voice. Arise, flee to Laban my brother in Haran and stay with him a while, until your brother’s fury turns away” (vv. 43–44). Rebekah’s heart was broken because her family was completely destroyed because of her evil plan. And when she was sending Jacob to Laban’s house, she never knew that Jacob would end up living there for 20 years. Genesis does not record if Rebekah saw Jacob again. But it appears that she never saw him again after his departure. What a tragedy!
Finally, what about Jacob? His world fell apart, too. He had to flee his house, his parents, and he had to flee away from his brother. Jacob was afraid of his brother Esau because Esau was determined to kill him. Gen 27 is a tragic chapter. Isaac’s family got broken literally in a moment. And it all began with the family leader Isaac’s disobedience.
APPLICATIONS
So, the first lesson that we can learn from today’s Word of God is that (1) Disobedience makes us stupid.
Let’s go back to Isaac. Sorry to say this, but today’s text describes Isaac as a stupid person. What made this 137-year-old man so unwise, careless, and stupid? It was because Isaac neglected God’s covenant promises and disobeyed God’s will.
The result?
Isaac ignored God’s promise and disobeyed his will, and it deprived him of wisdom, patience, and God’s blessings.
e.g. Isaac’s duty as the father and as the covenant descendant was to obey God, bless Jacob, and teach him the meaning and purpose of God’s blessing. But Isaac tried to bless Esau, and the reason for blessing was food he liked (not God’s covenant). That is stupidity. e.g. Isaac also became stupid and blind that he was so easily and quickly tricked by his son Jacob. Even though he felt like there was something weird, he didn’t catch it. When he said, “The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau” (v. 22), he should have stopped and checked again. But Isaac just continued and blessed Jacob. You may wonder how in the world it was possible for Jacob to deceive Isaac so easily. There is only one explanation: Isaac’s disobedience blinded him.
The second lesson is that (2) No matter what, God’s will stands.
In Gen 27, God worked in and through the messy drama in Isaac’s family.
Every one of them acted to move things in their own favor: (1) Isaac tried to bless Esau; (2) Esau went out to hunt and obtain his father’s blessing; (3) Rebekah successfully tricked her own husband into blessing her favorite son Jacob; and (4) Jacob ended up being blessed by Isaac by telling lies to his father and impersonating his brother.
Do you think Rebekah and Jacob are the winners because she succeeded in having Jacob be blessed by Isaac?
Or do you think Isaac and Esau were the losers in this ugly game because Isaac was tricked and Esau failed to Isaac’s blessing?
Gen 27 is none of them.
Gen 27 shows one thing: no matter what, God’s will stands.
Isaac’s family is completely broken and not doing well.
However, despite this covenant family’s ugly drama, God works through them because of his covenant faithfulness. God is a promise-keeper. He is turning Abraham and his descendants into a great nation. It is never hindered by human failures and mistakes.
Isaac blessed Jacob, not Esau—He did so because it was God’s will. Jacob was blessed not because he and his mom outsmarted Isaac. He received Isaac’s blessing because God made it happen. God accomplished his will in the midst of and through the failures of Isaac and his family.
