第二テモテ 3章 16~17節
16 聖書はすべて神の霊感によるもので、教えと戒めと矯正と義の訓練のために有益です。
17 神の人がすべての良い働きにふさわしく、十分に整えられたものとなるためです。
オープニング
世界で最も人気のあるスポーツは何でしょうか？おそらく、それはサッカーです。そう思いませんか？もちろん、カナダやアメリカの友人たちは違う考えを持っているかもしれません。でも、サッカーが世界で最も人気があり、最も広く楽しまれているスポーツだという事実は、否定しがたいものです。
では、なぜサッカーはこれほどまでに人気があるのでしょうか？その理由は何でしょう？一つの理由は、サッカーがあまりお金のかからないスポーツだからだと思います。つまり、サッカーをするのにお金はほとんどかかりません。必要なのはボールひとつだけ。高価な道具を買う必要はありません。世界中どこでも、裕福な国でも貧しい国でも、誰でもボールにはアクセスできます。つまり、誰でもサッカーを楽しめるということです。これこそが、サッカーが世界で最も広く楽しまれ、愛されているスポーツのひとつである理由だと私は思います。
神様は、私たちがクリスチャンとして成長するための手段を定めてくださいました。たとえば、特別な事情がない限り、誰もが聖書にアクセスできますし、誰もが祈ることができますよね？神様が私たちに与えてくださったこれらの手段は、サッカーボールのようなものです――誰もがアクセスできるのです。神様は、私たちが成長するためにこれらの手段をお与えになったのです。そして、これらのことを私たちは「恵みの手段（media gratia）」と呼びます。
ウェストミンスター小教理問答88問（WSC88）：
「キリストが私たちに贖いの恵みを伝えるために用いられる、外的で通常の手段とは、御言葉と聖礼典と祈りという、キリストご自身が制定された儀式であり、それらはすべて、選ばれた者たちにとって救いに有効なものとなります。」
つまり、「恵みの手段」とは、私たちがキリストの贖いの恵みにあずかり、その中で成長するために、神が定められた器なのです。そして、その中でも特に重要なのが以下の三つです：
聖書
祈り
聖礼典（洗礼と主の晩餐）
これら三つが、信仰者として私たちが成長し、キリストが与えてくださるすべての恵みに養われていく手段です。
聖書、祈り、聖礼典（洗礼と主の晩餐）――これらは、世の中の人が求めるような「派手な」ものではないかもしれません。でも、これこそが、私たちが本当に成長するために最も重要な手段なのです。言い換えれば、これら三つなしに、クリスチャンは成長できません。どれほど長く教会に通っていても、この三つの器をないがしろにしているなら、まったく成長していないということです。
「恵みの手段」に関してもうひとつ素晴らしいことは、イエス・キリストの御名によって集まるどのクリスチャン教会でも、これら三つの手段――
聖書
祈り
聖礼典
――を用いることができるという点です。つまり、（a）優れた音楽バンドや（b）宣教プログラム、（c）慈善活動、（d）社会正義のプロジェクトなどがなくても構わないのです。
ですから、クリスチャンはこの三つの手段（器）を通して神の恵みにおいて成長します：
聖書（聖書を読むこと＋説教を聞くこと）
祈り（祈りに取り組むこと）
聖礼典（聖礼典を受けること）
御言葉において成長する
テモテへの手紙 第二 3:16–17（新改訳）
16 聖書はすべて、神の霊感（いんすぴれーしょん）によるもので、教えるため、戒めるため、矯正するため、義に導くために有益です。
17 それは、神の人が完全に整えられ、あらゆる良い業に備えることができるようにするためです。
パウロは、聖書の「起源」について語っています。聖書の起源は神の霊感（インスピレーション）にあります。「神の霊感による」とは、「神によって息吹かれた（θεόπνευστος）」という意味であり、つまり神が聖書の言葉を「息吹いた」ということです。神は人間の著者たちを用いて御言葉を記されましたが、聖書のすべての言葉は神によって霊感されたものであり、神は人間の書き手を誤りから守りながら、ご自身の御心を完全に示されたのです。
聖書の不変の真理と神的な権威についての私たちの完全な確信と信頼は、聖霊が御言葉を通して、私たちの心に内的に証しされる働きによって生み出されるのです。（ウェストミンスター信仰告白 1章5節）。
聖書が神ご自身から出たものであるゆえに、それは力ある効果を持ちます――教え、戒め、矯正、義に導く訓練において有益であり、「神に仕える者が、あらゆる良い働きのために十分に整えられた者となる」ためです。
イエスもまた、聖書こそが救いのための最も重要な手段であると教えました。たとえばエマオへの道で、イエスは「モーセおよびすべての預言者から始めて、聖書全体の中で、ご自分について書かれている事がらを彼らに説き明かされた。」（ルカ24:27）。また、聖書の説教は使徒たちの宣教の中心でもありました（使徒2:22）。パウロはこう言います：「そのように、信仰は聞くことから生じ、聞くことはキリストについてのみことばによるのです。」（ローマ10:17）。聖書を聞き、読むことなしには、信仰は決して生まれません。神の言葉こそが、救いの信仰の源なのです。
ですから、私たちは神の御言葉を読むこと、聞くこと、黙想することの祝福に自らを献げるべきです。
- 神の御言葉は、私たちの救いのために宣べ伝えられます。
- 神の御言葉は、私たちの信仰を強めるために、教会の指導者たちによって教えられます。
- 私たちはそれを読み、黙想することによって、恵みと敬虔のうちに成長していきます。
祈りにおいて成長する
聖書の次に、祈りは「恵みの手段（means of grace）」の第二の柱です。
では、祈りとは何でしょうか？
本日の小教理問答（問98）ではこう定義されています：
問：祈りとは何ですか？
答： 祈りとは、私たちの願いをキリストの御名によって神にささげることであり、神の御心にかなうことを求め、罪を告白し、神の憐れみに感謝することです。
簡潔に言えば、祈りとは「主の御名を呼び求めること」です（使徒2:21）。
聖書は私たちの「霊の糧（たべもの）」です。イエスも言われました：『人はパンだけで生きるのではなく、神の口から出る一つ一つのことばによる』（マタイ4:4参照）。
そして、マルティン・ルターは祈りをこのように表現しました：
「祈りなしにクリスチャンでいることは、呼吸なしに生きるのと同じくらい不可能である。」
祈りは…
- 聖書の真理を頭から心へと移す手段
- 神との関係を築くための手段
- 自分の心を神に打ち明ける手段
- 神の御心（神の心）を聞きながら、自分が形造られていく手段
- 神の御国の価値観や優先順位を求める中で、私たち自身が変えられ、強められる手段
これがよく表現されているのが、ピリピ人への手紙4章6〜7節です：
ピリピ 4:6-7
6 何事も思い煩わないで、
どんな場合にも、感謝をもって祈りと願いをささげ、
あなたがたの願い事を神に知っていただきなさい。
7 そうすれば、すべての理解を超えた神の平安が、
あなたがたの心と思いを、キリスト・イエスにあって守ってくれます。
祈りは三位一体の神との交わりです：
- 父なる神に向かって叫ぶ（主の祈り、マタイ6章）
- 聖霊の助けによって祈る（ローマ8:26–27）
- 御子イエス・キリストの御名によって祈る
このように祈りは、三位一体の神と交わる行為であり、だからこそ力があり、重要なのです。
聖礼典において成長する
聖礼典（サクラメント）とは、キリストによって定められた聖なる儀式のことです。聖礼典は2つしかありません。それは、
洗礼（Baptism）
主の晩餐（The Lord’s Supper）
洗礼と主の晩餐は、「見えるしるし」であり、**見えない現実を表す標識（signpost）**です。
つまり、目には見えない霊的な真理を、見える形で示すものです。
私たちが信仰をもってこの聖礼典を見て、受けるとき、神はそこに恵みを与え、私たちの霊的命を変えてくださいます。
ウェストミンスター小教理問答ではこう述べています：
聖礼典において、「キリストと新しい契約の恵みが、物理的なしるしによって表され、封印され、信者に適用される」のです。
小教理問答 問91：
問：聖礼典は、どのようにして救いの有効な手段となるのですか？
答：
聖礼典が救いの有効な手段となるのは、それ自体に何か特別な力があるからでも、聖礼典を執行する人に力があるからでもなく、
キリストの祝福と、それを信仰によって受ける者たちのうちに働かれる御霊によるのです。
洗礼：信者とその子どもたちに与えられます（契約のしるし）。
主の晩餐：信者だけに与えられます（交わりのしるし）。
→ つまり、「陪餐会員（communing members）」のみが受けるべきものです。

「成長」とは何か？
成長は自然な問いです。命は必ず成長するからです。
だから、すべてのクリスチャンがこの問いと向き合うべきです：
「私はキリストにあって新しい命（新しい創造）を受けているのか？ それならば、私は今、成長しているだろうか？」
私たちの成長とは、「キリストの恵みと知識において成長すること」です。
2ペテロ 3:18（新改訳）
「そして、私たちの主であり救い主であるイエス・キリストの恵みと知識において、ますます豊かになりなさい。栄光が、今も、また永遠の日に至るまでも、このキリストにありますように。アーメン。」
神は私たちの成長のために手段を与えてくださいました。
それが「恵みの手段（means of grace）」です：
御言葉（聖書を読み、説教を聞く）
祈りに携わること
聖礼典を受けること（洗礼と主の晩餐）
私たちがこれらの手段を信仰によって用いるとき、キリストの恵みにおいて成長するのです。
では、なぜこれらの手段に力があるのか？
それは、それ自体に魔法のような力があるからではありません。
信仰によってそれらを受けるときに、聖霊が働かれるからです。
各手段の働き：
御言葉（WSC89）：
私たちが聖書を読むとき、説教を聞くとき、聖霊は私たちを確信に導き、聖め、慰め、救いへと導いてくださいます。
祈り（ローマ8:26–27）：
聖霊は私たちの祈りを助け、御言葉に基づいた神の御心にかなう祈りへと導いてくださいます。
聖礼典：
キリストは霊的に聖礼典のうちに現臨され、信仰者に恵みを与えてくださいます。
私たちはキリストを通して神に近づくことができます。
ヘブル 4:14
さて、私たちには、もろもろの天を通られた偉大な大祭司、神の子イエスがおられるのですから、私たちの信仰の告白を堅く保とうではありませんか。
ヘブル 4:16
ですから、私たちは、あわれみを受け、また恵みをいただいて、おりにかなった助けを受けるために、大胆に恵みの御座に近づこうではありませんか。
だからこそ、この「恵みへの道」を大切にしましょう。
神は、御言葉、祈り、聖礼典という三つの最も重要な手段を用いて、私たちをご自身の恵みに導いてくださいます。
ですから、兄弟姉妹たちよ、信仰をもってこれらの手段を用いましょう。
神はこれらを通して、確かにあなたを祝福してくださると約束されています。

16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
OPENING
What is the most popular sport in the world? Arguably, it’s soccer. Don’t you think so? Well, our Canadian or American friends may have a different idea. But it’s hard to dispute the fact that soccer is the most popular and most widely enjoyed sport in the world.
Then why do you think it is so? What is the reason that makes soccer so popular? One reason may be that soccer is not an expensive sport. Here’s what I mean. It doesn’t cost any money to play soccer. All you need is just a ball. You don’t need to buy expensive equipment. In any country or place in the world, rich or poor, everybody has access to a ball. That means anyone can enjoy soccer. I believe that makes soccer one of the most widely enjoyed and loved sports in the world.
God has appointed things by which we grow as Christians. For example, unless they are in extreme circumstance, everyone has access to a Bible; everyone has access to prayer, right? And these things that God has given us are like a soccer ball—anyone can access them. God has given us these means for our growth. And we call them the means of grace (恵みの手段, media gratia).
WSC88: “The outward and ordinary means whereby Christ communicates to us the benefits of redemption, are his ordinances, especially the word, sacraments, and prayer; all which are made effectual to the elect for salvation”
So, the means of grace are the instruments God assigned for us so that we can grow in the benefits of Christ’s redemption. And there are three foremost means: (1) the Bible; (2) prayer; and (3) sacraments. These are the three ways in which we grow as believers, in which we are fed and nourished in all the benefits that Christ offers.
The Bible; prayer; and sacraments (baptism and the Lord’s Supper)—these may not be something “flashy” people seek after. But these are the most important means by which we can grow. In other words, without these three things, no Christian can grow. No matter how long you’ve been attending church, if you neglect these three instruments, you are not growing at all. Another amazing thing about the means of grace is that any Christian church gathered in the name of Jesus Christ can use the means of grace (1) the Bible; (2) prayer; and (3) sacraments—we don’t need to have (a) great music bands; (b) mission programs; (c) charity programs; (d) social justice projects, etc.
So, Christians grow in God’s grace through these three means (instruments):
- The Bible (Bible reading + listening to sermons)
- Prayer (engaging in prayer)
- The Sacraments (receiving the sacraments)
GROW IN THE WORD
2 Tim 3:16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
Paul speaks of the origin of the Bible. The origin of the Bible is God’s inspiration: Breathed out by God: it means “inspired” by God—in other words, God-breathed out the words of the Bible (θεόπνευστος); God used human writers as the vehicle. But every word of the Bible is God-breathed—God fully revealed his will in and through the words and protected the human writers from errors.
Our full persuasion and assurance of the infallible truth, and divine authority of Scripture is from the inward work of the Holy Spirit, who bears witness by and with the word in our hearts (Westminster Confession of Faith 1.5).
Just because the origin of the Bible is God himself, it has powerful effects: profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
Jesus taught that the Bible is the most important instrument of salvation (e.g. Luke 24:27 on the road to Emmaus: 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself). And the preaching of the Scriptures was always central in the ministry of the Apostles (Acts 2:22). Paul says, “faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ” (Rom 10:17). Without hearing and reading the Bible, faith never occurs. The word of God is the source of saving faith.
Therefore, we should devote ourselves to the blessings of reading, hearing, and meditating on the word of God.
- God’s Word is proclaimed for our salvation.
- Gods Word is taught to us by leaders to strengthen our faith.
- We read it and meditate on it to grow in grace and godliness.
GROW IN PRAYER
After the Bible, prayer is the second means of grace.
What is prayer? We read in today’s catechism (QA98): What is prayer? Prayer is offering our desires to God in the name of Christ for things that agree with his will, confessing our sins, and thankfully recognizing his mercies.
Simply put, prayer is “calling upon the name of the Lord” (Acts 2:21)
The Bible is our food. Jesus (not only by bread but also by the word of God)
Matin Luther: prayer is like breathing: “It is no more possible to be a Christian without prayer than it is to be alive without breathing” (Martin Luther).
Prayer
- moves the truths of Scriptures from our heads into our hearts
- is a means of building relationship with God
- is a means of sharing our hearts with him
- is a means of being shaped by him as we hear his heart toward us
- changes and strengthens us as we seek the priorities of God’s kingdom
And this is well expressed in Phil 4:6-7: Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to3 God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Prayer involves the Holy Trinity: (1) crying out to God the Father (the Lord’s prayer, Matt 6) (2) by the power/help of God the Spirit (Rom 8:26–27) (3) in the name of God the son. This is the reason why prayer is so powerful and important.
GROW IN SACRAMENTS
A sacrament is a holy regulation established by Christ. There are only two sacraments: 洗礼 (Baptism) and 主の晩餐 (The Lord’s Supper). Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are signposts—visible elements—which symbolize and signify an invisible reality. In other words, they show something that we cannot see. So, when we see the sacraments and receive the sacraments by faith, God give us grace and transforms our lives. In baptism and the Lord’s Supper, “Christ and the benefits of the new covenant are represented, sealed, and applied to believers by physical signs” (Westminster Shorter Catechism).
Q91. How do the sacraments become effective means of salvation?
A91. The sacraments become effective means of salvation, not because of any special power in them or in the people who administer them, but rather by the blessing of Christ and the working of his Spirit in those who receive them by faith.
Baptism: for believers and their children. However, the Lord’s Supper is only for believers. (cf. communing and non-communing members)
CLOSING
June 8: #1 What is church? In Christ, we are being built together.
June 15: #2 How do I become part of the church? Baptism and Church membership.
Today: #3 How Do I Grow in the Church and in Faith?
This question on “growing” is natural because life must grow. Every Christian should ask this question. Every Christian must struggle with this question. Am I a new life/creation in Christ? Then am I growing?
But what is our growing all about? It’s growing in the grace of Christ and in the knowledge of Christ: 2 Pet 3:18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
Would you like to grow a lot? God has given us the means for that growth. They are the means of grace: (1) reading the Bible and listening to preaching; (2) engaging in prayer; and (3) receiving sacraments. Your growth in the grace of Christ will depend on your use of the means that God has appointed.
But the means of grace are not powerful in and of themselves. How do they work? Why are they effectual in our growth in the grace and knowledge of Christ? They work because the Holy Spirit works in the believers who use the means of grace by faith.
- THE WORD: When you read the Bible and hear the preaching of the word, the Holy Spirit works to convince you, build you up in holiness, and comfort you unto salvation (WSC 89).
- PRAYER: The Holy Spirit helps our prayers (Rom 8:26–27); and our prayers becomes a means of grace only when it is based on and shaped by the teaching of the Bible. And the Holy Spirit uses the Word of God and makes us pray in accord with God’s will.
- SACRAMENTS: Christ is spiritually present in sacraments.
We have access to God through Christ.
Heb 4:14, 16 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession . . . Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
This is an amazing path to grace.And God has appointed three most important means for us to access the throne of grace. In other words, we must believe that God has given certain means for that growth: we access God and God strengthens us through the means of grace: (1) Bible; (2) Prayer; (3) Sacraments. Therefore, brothers and sisters, use these means with strong expectation and genuine reliance on our God who has promised to bless us. And rest assured to know that God will surely bless you when you use these means of grace by faith.
