エペソ人の人への手紙 2章11-22節
11 ですから、思い出してください。あなたがたはかつて、肉においては異邦人でした。人の手で肉に施された、いわゆる「割礼」を持つ人々からは、無割礼の者と呼ばれ、
12 そのころは、キリストから遠く離れ、イスラエルの民から除外され、約束の契約については他国人で、この世にあって望みもなく、神もない者たちでした。
13 しかし、かつては遠く離れていたあなたがたも、今ではキリスト・イエスにあって、キリストの血によって近い者となりました。
14 実に、キリストこそ私たちの平和です。キリストは私たち二つのものを一つにし、ご自分の肉において、隔ての壁である敵意を打ち壊し、
15 様々な規定から成る戒めの律法を廃棄されました。こうしてキリストは、この二つをご自分において新しい一人の人に造り上げて平和を実現し、
16 二つのものを一つのからだとして、十字架によって神と和解させ、敵意を十字架によって滅ぼされました。
17 また、キリストは来て、遠くにいたあなたがたに平和を、また近くにいた人々にも平和を、福音として伝えられました。
18 このキリストを通して、私たち二つのものが、一つの御霊によって御父に近づくことができるのです。
19 こういうわけで、あなたがたは、もはや他国人でも寄留者でもなく、聖徒たちと同じ国の民であり、神の家族なのです。
20 使徒たちや預言者たちという土台の上に建てられていて、キリスト・イエスご自身がその要の石です。
21 このキリストにあって、建物の全体が組み合わされて成長し、主にある聖なる宮となります。
22 あなたがたも、このキリストにあって、ともに築き上げられ、御霊によって神の御住まいとなるのです。
私たちの教会の建物は、4つの異なる教会が同じ建物の中で礼拝を行っているため、非常にユニークです。この建物は、これ以上ないほど国際的です。
ドイツ合同教会（ドイツ語；合同派）
グリーブ・ロード合同教会（カナダ；合同派）
グレイス・トロント日本語教会（日本；PCA）
忠賢長老教会（韓国；KPCA）
ドイツ人、カナダ人、日本人、韓国人がこの建物に集まって礼拝をしています。そして私たちはこれらの集まりを「教会」と呼んでいます。今日から3週間にわたり、これらのことについて考えていきたいと思います。
教会とは何か？
教会はなぜ重要なのか？
どのようにして教会に属するのか？ (どのようにして教会の一員となるのか？)
教会の中で信仰をどのように成長させるか？
文脈
今日の聖書本文は、教会の本質について最も重要な箇所の一つです。エペソ人への手紙2章に基づいて、次の2つの質問に答えようとします。(1)教会とは何か？ (2)教会はなぜ重要なのか？
本文
パウロはエペソの教会のクリスチャンたちに、あることを思い出すように語っています。何を思い出すのか？彼らの過去の状態、正確に言えば、キリストを信じる前のあなたがたがどのような者であったかを思い出すように、ということです。何よりも、彼らはユダヤ人から無視され、軽蔑されていました。ユダヤ人は異邦人を「無割礼の者」と呼んで嘲笑していたのです。しかし、それだけではありませんでした。
パウロは彼らの過去の状態について、さらに5つのことを付け加えています（12節）。
* キリストから離れて：彼らはキリストとは何の関係もありませんでした。
* イスラエルの共同体から疎外されて：彼らはイスラエルの一部ではありませんでした。ユダヤ人から歓迎されていなかったのです。
* 約束の契約に縁遠く：彼らはアブラハムに与えられた約束の契約に何の関わりもありませんでした。
* この世にあってで望みがなく：彼らはイエスを知りませんでした。ですから、当然のことながら、望みもありませんでした。
* 神もなく：そして彼らはこの世にあって神もなく生きていました。
彼らがキリストの信者になる前の過去の状態は、本当にひどいものでした。
- そしてパウロはエペソのクリスチャンたちに、「ですから、思い出してください」と強く促しています。「イエス・キリストを知らなかった頃、あなたがたがそのような闇の中で生きていたことを忘れてはならない」と。
- しかし、同じことが私たちにも当てはまるはずです。神はあなたにこれを思い出すように促しています。キリストから離れていた時、あなたには希望がなく、この世で神なしに生きていたこと、それは本当にひどい状態だったのです。
このことを思い出すと、次のような問いが生まれます。キリストなしに生きられるでしょうか？ 神なしに生きられるでしょうか？ 答えは明確にノーです。私にはキリストがいます。私は約束の契約に縁遠い者ではありません。私には希望があります。私はこの世にいますが、キリストを通して神が私と共にいてくださいます。
このことを悟ると、私たちは神を賛美せずにはいられません。本当に神に感謝したくなります。確かに、私たちの人生は困難なこともあるでしょう。しかしパウロは、キリストなしに生きていた過去の暗い状態を思い出すように私たちに強く促しているのです。
しかし今、パウロは彼らに、キリストにおける彼らの現在の状態を見るように促しています。
彼は「しかし今や、キリスト・イエスにあって」（13節）と言います。何が起こったのでしょうか？ キリストは人々の間（ユダヤ人と異邦人の間）に平和をもたらしました。
- かつて神から遠く離れていたあなた方異邦人は、「キリストの血によって」近い者となりました（13節）。
- ユダヤ人も異邦人も両方とも一つになりました（14節）。なぜなら、キリストこそ私たちの平和であり、彼はユダヤ人と異邦人の間の「敵意という隔ての壁」を取り壊されたからです！ キリストは律法を完成させました。だから今や、ユダヤ人と異邦人はキリストにあって一つにされました（15節）。
これはまさに革命的な宣言です。ユダヤ人と異邦人の間の「敵意という隔ての壁」はあまりにも高く、強固でした。しかしパウロは、両方のグループがキリストの血によって一つにされたのは、キリストが私たちの平和だからであると言います。
例えば、韓国への宣教師の一人、サミュエル・ムーア（1860-1906年）は、両班（貴族）、平民、奴隷、肉屋といった人々が一緒に礼拝しているのを見ました。どうしてそれが可能だったのでしょうか？ それはキリストが彼らの平和であったからこそ可能だったのです。
それだけでなく、キリストは人々と神との間にも平和をもたらしました。
- キリストは私たち両方（ユダヤ人と異邦人）を神と和解させました。
- キリストは二つのもの（ユダヤ人と異邦人）を「一つの体」としました（16節）。
そして、彼はどのようにしてそれを成し遂げたのでしょうか？ 「十字架によって」（16節）です。
- 私たち両方（近くにいたユダヤ人、そして遠く離れていた異邦人）は、「彼を通して」（キリストを通して）父なる神に近づくことができます（18節）。
それでは、教会とは何でしょうか？ 教会とは、次の二つのことを私たちに示す集まりです。
- キリストは人々と神との間にも平和をもたらしました（キリスト＝平和：したがって、私たちは神と平和を持っています）。
- キリストは人々の間（ユダヤ人と異邦人の間）に平和をもたらしました（キリスト＝平和：したがって、ユダヤ人と異邦人は一つに集められています）。
そして教会の究極の目的は次の通りです。(1) 神に近づき、神を愛すること：18節「彼を通して、私たちは両方とも、一つの御霊によって父に近づくことができるのです。」そして (2) 兄弟姉妹を愛すること：ヨハネの手紙第一4章21節「神を愛する者は、その兄弟も愛すべきである。」
もう一度、19節から22節を読んでみましょう。
「19 こういうわけで、あなたがたは、もはや他国人でも寄留者でもなく、聖徒たちと同じ国の民であり、神の家族なのです。
20 使徒たちや預言者たちという土台の上に建てられていて、キリスト・イエスご自身がその要の石です。
21 このキリストにあって、建物の全体が組み合わされて成長し、主にある聖なる宮となります。
22 あなたがたも、このキリストにあって、ともに築き上げられ、御霊によって神の御住まいとなるのです。」
イエスを信じると、あなたの状態は、(1) あなたは聖徒たちと同じ国籍の者であり、(2) 神の家族（神の家族）の一員である、ということです（19節）。
- 聖書は教会を普遍的なものと局所的なものの両方であると述べています。教会のカテゴリは二つあります。
- 普遍的な教会は、時に見えない教会とも呼ばれます。局所的な教会は、見える教会と呼ばれます。
- では、普遍的な教会とは何でしょうか？ 普遍的な教会とは、あらゆる時代、あらゆる場所におけるキリストを信じるすべての人々の交わりです。使徒信条で「公同の教会」と言うとき、それは普遍的な教会を指します。
- 普遍的な教会は、人類の歴史の始まりから終わりまでの信者の総数です。それは真にキリストの信者であるすべての人々から構成されています。それは、キリストに属するすべての信者—過去、現在、未来—の天上の集会です。
- 普遍的な教会は見えないと言いますが、それは私たちにとって見えないという意味であり、神にとってははっきりと見えています。
ですから、パウロが19節で「しかしあなたがたは、聖徒たちと同じ国籍の者であり、神の家族なのである」と言うとき、もしあなたが真にキリストに属するなら、あなたは普遍的な教会に属しているということです。それはあなたには見えませんが、神には見えているのです。
そして、普遍的な教会に属するとき、あなたに起こることは20節から22節に書かれています。建物が建てられるように、キリストにあって、私たちは「神の住まいとしてともに築き上げられている」のです（22節）。これは驚くべきことではありませんか？ あなたは知っていましたか？ 感じていましたか？ しかし、これが今私たちに起こっていることなのです。私たちは神のための美しく聖なる住まいとして築き上げられているのです！
- そしてこの住まいについて驚くべきことは、「キリスト・イエスご自身がその要の石である」（20節）ということです。
- そして彼にあって、「建物全体が組み合わされて成長し、主にある聖なる宮となります」（21節）。
- そして最終的には、「このキリストにあって、ともに築き上げられ、御霊によって神の御住まいとなるのです」（22節）。
この建築プロセスにおいて、取り残される信者は一人もいません。私たち全員が共に築き上げられています。いのりちゃんから村井先生まで、日本人、カナダ人、韓国人、中国人、男性も女性も、富める者も貧しい者も、健康な者も病気の者も、私たちは皆、神の聖なる住まいとして共に築き上げられているのです。
この建築プロセスで驚くべきことは、それが地域教会で行われるということです。
適用
私たちの地域教会：グレイス・トロント日本語教会
- 私たちは普遍的な教会について話しました。キリストを信じる信仰を置くとき、私たちが普遍的な教会に属することを学びましたね。
- では、地域教会についてはどうでしょうか？ それは何を指すのでしょう？
- 地域教会は「見える」教会とも呼ばれます。なぜなら、私たちはそれを見ることができるからです。
- 地域教会とは、**特定の地理的地域に住む信者のグループで、礼拝のために定期的に集まる（福音の宣べ伝えと聖礼典を行う）**ものです。
- 地域教会は、特定の場所における普遍的な教会の目に見える現れなのです。
- では、どちらが大きいのでしょうか？ もちろん、普遍的な教会の方が大きいです。地域教会は常に普遍的な教会の一部です。
- ですから、普遍的な教会のメンバーは通常、地域教会のメンバーでもあります（ただし、自動的に一対一の関係になる保証はありません）。見える教会のメンバーであるからといって、必ずしも見えない教会の一部であるとは限りません。
- 普遍的な教会に属する人の特徴は、この人は常に目に見える/地域教会のメンバーであることを優先するということです。
- 地域教会の例としては、どのようなものがあるでしょうか？ (例：テサロニケの教会、エペソの教会、ローマの教会、大阪の教会、ニューヨーク市のリディーマー教会、そして私たちの教会であるグレイス・トロント日本語教会などです)。
結び
さて、私が尋ねた質問に戻りましょう。(1) 教会とは何か？ (2) 教会はなぜ重要なのか？
教会とは、次の二つのことを示す集まりです。
- 教会は、神と平和を持っている人々（イエス・キリストの血によって）の集まりです。
- 教会は、互いに平和のうちに生きる人々（例：ユダヤ人と異邦人）の集まりです。
そして、教会はなぜ重要なのでしょうか？
地域教会に属することによって、私たちは (a) 父に近づくことができ、(b) キリストを通して、(c) 一つの御霊によって近づくことができます。「キリストを通して父なる神に近づくことができます」（18節）。もちろん、私たち一人ひとりが個人的に神に近づくことができますが、聖書は、御言葉の宣べ伝え、聖餐式、バプテスマのために、キリストの地域的で目に見える教会の文脈で集まるように教えています。
この意味で、教会は世界で最もユニークな組織の一つです。なぜでしょう？ なぜなら、教会の土台、その要の石、そしてかしらは、牧師や長老ではなく、イエス・キリストだからです。
GTJCは地域教会です。GTJCは目に見える教会です。あなたも私も、この神のユニークで重要な共同体であるグレイス・トロント日本語教会の一員です。そして、私たちの教会の頭は私たちの主であり救い主であるイエス・キリストです。そして、「このキリストにあって、ともに築き上げられ、御霊によって神の御住まいとなるのです」（22節）。

Ephesians 2
11 Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, called “the uncircumcision” by what is called the circumcision, which is made in the flesh by hands— 12 remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility 15 by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, 16 and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility. 17 And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. 18 For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. 19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
OPENING
Our church building is exceptionally unique because we have four separate churches worshiping in this same building. This building is as international as it could be.
- German United Church (German; United)
- Glebe Road United Church (Canada; United)
- Grace Toronto Japanese Church (Japan; PCA)
- Chunghyun Presbyterian Church (Korea; KPCA)
German, Canadian, Japanese, and Korean people gather to worship in this building. And we call these gatherings “church.” From today and for the following three weeks, I’d like us to think about these things:
- What is the church?
- Why is the church important?
- How does one belong to a church? (How does one become part of the church?)
- How can I grow in faith within the church?
CONTEXT
Our text today is one of the most important passages about the nature of the church. Based on Ephesians 2, we’ll try to answer these two questions: (1) what is the church? (2) why is the church important?
TEXT
Paul is telling the Christians in the Ephesian church to remember something. Remember what? Remember their status in the past—precisely speaking, remember what you were like before you believed in Christ. Most of all, they were ignored and despised by the Jewish people—they mocked the Gentiles, calling them “the uncircumcision.” But it was not all.
Paul adds 5 more things about their past status (v. 12):
- Separated from Christ: They had nothing to do with Christ.
- Alienated from the commonwealth of Israel: They were not part of Israel—they were not welcomed by the Jews.
- Strangers to the covenants of promise: And they didn’t have any share in the covenant of promise given to Abraham.
- Having no hope: They didn’t know Jesus—so, of course, they had no hope.
- Without God in the world: And they were without God in the world.
Their past status before they became followers of Christ was truly terrible.
- And Paul is urging the Ephesian Christians: “Therefore, remember” that: Don’t forget that you were living in such darkness when you didn’t know Jesus Christ.
- However, the same should apply to you and me as well. God is urging you to remember this: at that time when you were separated from Christ, you had no hope, you were in the world without God—that truly is a terrible status.
So, this reminder leads to a question: Can I live without Christ? Can I live without God? The answer is a clear No. I have Christ. I am not a stranger to the covenants of promise. I have hope. I am in the world, but God is with me through Christ.
Realizing this makes us praise God—it really makes us give thanks to God. Yes, our lives can be challenging. However, Paul is urging us to remember our past dark status without Christ.
Now Paul is urging them to see their present status in Christ.
He says, “But now in Christ Jesus” (v. 13). What has happened? Christ brought peace between people (between Jews and Gentiles)
- You Gentiles who once were far from God have been brought near “by the blood of Christ” (v. 13).
- Both Jews and Gentiles have become one (v. 14)—because Christ is our peace and he has broken down the “dividing wall of hostility” between Jews and Gentiles! Christ completed the law: so now, Jews and Gentiles have been brought together in Christ (v. 15)
This is such a revolutionary declaration. The “dividing wall of hostility” between Jews and Gentiles was too tall and strong. But Paul says both groups have been brough together by the blood of Christ because Christ is our peace.
e.g. One of the missionaries to Korea: Samuel Moore 1860-1906 (The Yangban class [aristocrats], commoners, slaves, butchers—worshiping together). How was it possible? It was only possible because Christ was their peace.
Not only that, but Christ also brought peace between people and God
- Christ has reconciled us both (Jews and Gentiles) to God
- Christ has made both (Jews and Gentiles) “one body” (v. 16)
And how did he do it? “through the cross” (v. 16)
- We both (Jews – who were near and Gentiles – who were far off) have access to the Father “through him” (through Christ) (v. 18)
So, what is the church? The church is a gathering that shows us these two things:
- Christ also brought peace between people and God (Christ=peace: therefore, we have peace with God)
- Christ brought peace between people (between Jews and Gentiles) Christ=peace: therefore, Jews and Gentiles are brought together
And the ultimate purpose of the church is: (1) Approach God and love God: 18 For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. And (2) Love our brothers and sisters: 1 John 4:21: whoever loves God must also love his brother.
Let’s read vv. 19-22 one more time: 19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
When you believe in Jesus, your status is that (1) you are a fellow citizen with the saints and (2) a member of the household of God (kamino kazoku) (v. 19).
- The Bible speaks of the church as being both universal and local. There are two church categories.
- The universal church is sometimes called invisible church. The local church is called visible church.
- So, what is the universal church? The universal church isthe fellowship of all believers in Christ from all times and all places. When we say in the Apostle’s Creed “catholic church” (公同の教会), that is the universal church.
- The universal church is the total number of believers from the beginning to the end of human history. It comprises all those who REALLY are followers of Christ —it is the heavenly assembly of every believer—past, present, and future—who belongs to Christ.
- Although we say the universal church is invisible, it means it is invisible only to us—but it is clearly visible to God.
So, when Paul says in v. 19 but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, he means, if you truly belong to Christ, then you belong to the universal church—invisible to you but visible to God.
And when you belong to the universal church, what happens to you is in vv. 20–22: just like a building is built, in Christ, we are being built together into a dwelling place for God (v. 22). Isn’t this amazing? Did you know? Did you feel it? But this is what’s happening to us now. We’re being built into a beautiful and holy dwelling place for God!
- And the amazing thing about this dwelling place is that “Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone” (v. 20).
- And in him, “the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord” (v. 21).
- And ultimately, “In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit” (v. 22).
No believer is left behind in this building process—all of us are being built together—from Inori chan to Murai sensei, Japanese, Canadian, Korean, Chinese, men and women, rich and poor, healthy and sick—we all are being built together as God’s holy dwelling place.
What’s amazing about this building process: it takes place in local churches.
APPLICATIONS
Our Local Church: Grace Toronto Japanese Church
- We talked about the universal church: we learned that we belong to the universal church when we put our faith in Christ.
- What about the local church? What is it?
- The local church is also called “visible” church because we can see it.
- The local church is that group of believers in a specific geographical area who gather regularly for worship (gospel-preaching and Sacraments).
- The local church is the visible manifestation of the universal church in a particular place.
- So, what is larger? Of course, the universal church is larger. A local church is always a part of the universal church.
- So, a universal church member is usually a local church member (But there is no guarantee—it is not an automatic one-to-one relationship). Being a member of the visible church doesn’t necessarily mean that he is part of the invisible church.
- One who belongs to the universal church—that person’s character: this person will always make it a priority to be a member of the visible/local church.
- What are some examples of the local church? (e.g. The church of the Thessalonians; the Ephesian church, the church in Rome, a church in Osaka, Redeemer church in New York city, and our church Grace Toronto Japanese Church).
CLOSING
So, let’s go back to the questions I asked: (1) what is the church? (2) why is the church important?
The church is a gathering that demonstrates two things:
- The church is a gathering of people who have peace with God (by the blood of Jesus Christ)
- The church is a gathering of people who live in peace with one another (e.g. Jews and Gentiles)
And why is the church important?
By belong to a local church, we (a) have access to the Father, (b) through Christ, (c) in one Spirit: 18 For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. Of course, each of us individually has access to God—but the Bible teaches us to gather in the context of a local and visible church of Christ for preaching of the Word, Holy Communion, and baptism.
In this sense, the church is that it is one of the most unique organizations in the world. Why? Because the foundation, cornerstone, and head of the church is Jesus Christ, not pastors or elders.
GTJC is a local church. GTJC is a visible church. You and I are part of this unique and important community of God—Grace Toronto Japanese Church. And the head of our church is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. And “In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit” (v. 22).
