コリント人への手紙 第一 15章14～20節
14 もしキリストがよみがえらなかったのなら、私たちの宣教はむなしく、あなたがたの信仰もむなしいのです。
15 そればかりでなく、もし死者がよみがえらないとしたら、私たちは神について、キリストをよみがえらせたと証言した偽りの証人ということになります。
16 なぜなら、もし死者がよみがえらないのなら、キリストもよみがえらなかったからです。
17 そして、もしキリストがよみがえらなかったのなら、あなたがたの信仰はむなしく、あなたがたは今もなお自分の罪の中にいるのです。
18 そういうわけで、キリストにあって眠った者たちも、滅んでしまったのです。
19 もし、私たちがこの世においてのみキリストに希望を持っているとしたら、私たちはすべての人の中で最もあわれむべき者たちです。
20 しかし、今やキリストは、眠っている者たちの初穂として、死者の中からよみがえられたのです。
はじめに
イエスが十字架で亡くなった時
* イエスの信者たちは絶望した
* 宗教指導者たちは祝った
しかし、並外れた出来事が起こった それから間もなく
* イエスの信者たちは飛躍的に増加した
* 使徒たちはそのために命を捧げた
* 多くの人々が続いた ローマ帝国の大きな迫害さえも、その広がりを止めることはできなかった！
そして2000年後の今日、私たちは1世紀のイエスの信者たちと同じ信仰を持っています—それはイエスの復活への信仰です。
現代の不信： しかし、ほとんどの人は、イエスが墓からよみがえり、生きていると信じるのは難しいと感じています。なぜなら、誰もが同意すると思われることが一つあるからです。（1）誰も死を避けることはできない。（2）そして、死んだ人が再び生き返ることはない。
例：中国の小さな町で／赤ちゃんが生まれた／お祝いのパーティー—祝福の言葉、例えば「彼は弁護士になるだろう」など。一人の賢い老人が言った。「この赤ちゃんは死ぬだろう」—それは赤ちゃんに起こる最も確実なことだったでしょう？彼は真実を語ったのです。
古代コリントも同様だった： 2000年前に巻き戻ってみましょう。コリント教会は今日と変わらなかった。なぜなら、彼らも復活について同じ問題を抱えていたからです。「死者の復活はない」（15:12）と信じない者たちもいました。彼らの主張は、「死んだ人が再び生き返ることはありえない」ということでした。言い換えれば、死は何よりも強い。何者も死に打ち勝つことはできないのです。今日の聖書箇所は、そのような人々へのパウロの返答です。パウロの返答はこうです。（2）確かに死は確実です。しかし、もっと確実なことがあります。死者は再びよみがえる—復活があるのです。
復活がない？（12-19節）
パウロは問いかけます。「なるほど、あなたがたは復活はないと言う。それではどうなるのか？深刻な問題が生じるでしょう？それは何ですか？」
最も深刻な問題： もし復活がないのなら、「キリストもよみがえらなかった」（13節、16節）。パウロは続けます。（1）もし復活がなく、（2）したがってキリストがよみがえらなかったのなら、それは何を意味するのか？多くのその後の問題が起こります。
#問題1
「私たちの宣教はむなしい」（14節）
「あなたがたの信仰もむなしい」（14節）
ここで「むなしい」とは、「空っぽの」「根拠のない」「全く土台のない」という意味です。ですから、もしイエスが殺され、決して復活しなかったとしたら、パウロが宣べ伝えてきたことは全くの空虚であり、あなたがたの信じていることには土台がなく、それはこの福音とキリスト教全体が時間の無駄であることを意味します。
21世紀に生きる私たちにも同じことが当てはまります。もしキリストが復活しなかったのなら、私の今の説教は空っぽであり、（大変申し訳ありませんが）あなたの信仰は根拠のないものです。ですから、もしイエスの復活がなかったのなら、私たちは今すぐやめて家に帰り、二度と戻ってくるべきではありません。
#問題2
「あなたがたの信仰はむだである」（17節）
「あなたがたは今もなお自分の罪の中にいる」（17節）
繰り返しますが、あなたの信仰はむだです—これもまた、あなたの信仰が完全に空っぽであることを意味します。それには内容も対象もなく、もしキリストがよみがえらなかったのなら、あなたの信仰は無意味で無力です—なぜなら、（1）あなたの信仰の対象であるイエスは死によって滅ぼされたからです。（2）あなたの信仰の内容であるイエスは、罪と死に打ち勝つことができなかったからです。
その結果、あなたは今もなお自分の罪の中にいます。なぜなら、イエスは罪と死の力に打ち勝てなかったからです。もしイエスがよみがえらなかったのなら、それは彼が戦いに負けたことを意味し、したがって彼の血は私たちを罪から救うことができません。ですから、もしキリストが復活しなかったのなら、（申し訳ありませんが）あなたは今もなお自分の罪の中にいるのです。
#問題3
「キリストにあって眠った者たちも、滅んでしまった」（18節）
もしイエス・キリストの復活がなかったのなら、過去に死んだすべてのクリスチャン／信者たちは、実際には滅んでしまったのです—彼らは救われず、罪の罪悪感と力に打ち勝つことができなかったために、永遠の刑罰と裁きの状態に陥ったのです。それは恐ろしい言葉ではありませんか？
さらに恐ろしいのは、それが私たち（あなたと私）も死んだ時に永遠に滅びることを意味するということです。希望はありません。あなたの救い主は死んでいます。ですから、あなたは永遠に滅びるのです。
だからこそパウロはこう言います。「もし、私たちがこの世においてのみキリストに希望を持っているとしたら、私たちはすべての人の中で最もあわれむべき者たちです」（19節）。
もしイエスが復活しなかったのなら、パウロと彼の仲間たちは最もあわれむべき人々です。なぜなら、彼らはイエス・キリストの福音を広めるために大きな苦難に耐えたからです。しかし、それは無駄だったということになります。
同様に、もしイエスが復活しなかったのなら、私たち（あなたと私）はすべての人の中で最もあわれむべき者たちです（特に、村井牧師と私自身）。
しかし、キリストはよみがえられた（20節）

兄弟姉妹の皆さん、イエスは死者の中からよみがえられました！しかし、それは私たちにとって何を意味するのでしょうか？二つの意味を分かち合いたいと思います。

意味2：私たちの将来の復活 パウロは、キリストは「初穂」（20節）であると言います。イエスの復活の第二の意味は、彼の復活の力が私たちすべてに及ぶということです。イエスの復活は彼自身のためだけではありません。それは私たちすべてのためでもあるのです。2000年前、神の霊がイエスを墓からよみがえらせた時、彼はキリストにあるすべての人々をもよみがえらせました。キリストの復活は、私たちの将来の復活においても同じ経験をすることを私たちに示しています。キリストに信仰を持つ人々は、イエスの復活した体のような栄光の復活の体を受けるでしょう。
生きている者： キリストが再臨される時に生きている者は—彼らは「同様の[キリストの]変容を経験する」でしょう。 死んだ者： キリストが再臨される前に死んだクリスチャンは、「彼らの新しい体で『装われる』でしょう…古い体が塵に戻る時かその後に起こる明確な出来事として」。そして、キリストが再臨される時、彼らは墓からよみがえり、復活の体を受けるでしょう。 その時、私たちの体は永遠に朽ちることのないものとなります。 あなたの体は二度と衰えることはありません。 あなたの体は二度と弱くなったり、病気になったりすることはありません。 あなたの体は完全に病気から解放されます。 あなたの体は、三位一体の御前で永遠に栄光のうちに生きるでしょう。 1コリント15:53-55：「この朽ちる体は朽ちないものを着、この死ぬべき体は不死を着なければならないからです。朽ちるものが朽ちないものを着、死ぬべきものが不死を着るとき、『死は勝利にのまれた』と書かれている言葉が実現します。『死よ、おまえの勝利はどこにあるのか。死よ、おまえのとげはどこにあるのか』」。
結び 私たちは日曜日に礼拝のために集まります—なぜなら、イエスの復活を祝いたいからです。よみがえったイエスは今生きて、神の右に座って、私たちのために祈っておられます—そして、彼は必ず戻って来られます。そして私たちは皆、復活の体を受け、彼の王国で永遠に生きるでしょう。
あなたは憂鬱ですか？苦しんでいますか？失望していますか？恐れていますか？私たちのよみがえられた主であり救い主であるイエスのもとに来てください。

1 Corinthians 15:14-20
14 And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. 15 We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied. 20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
Introduction
When Jesus died on the cross
- The followers of Jesus despaired
- The religious leaders celebrated
But something extraordinary happened
Not long after
- The followers of Jesus increased exponentially
- the Apostles gave their lives for it
- Many others followed
Even the great persecutions under the Roman Empire couldn’t stop the spread! And fast-forward 2,000 years, today, we are here with the same faith as the Jesus followers’ in the first century—it is the faith in the resurrection of Jesus.
MODERN UNBELIEF: But most people find it hard to believe that Jesus rose from the grave and is alive. Because if there is one thing that everybody seems to agree on, it is that (1) nobody avoids death; (2) and dead people do not become alive again.
e.g. In a small town in China / A baby was born / Celebration party – words of blessings e.g. “I think he will be a lawyer” etc. One wise old man: This baby will die—that was the surest thing that will happen to the baby, right? He told the truth.
ANCIENT CORINTH WAS THE SAME: Rewind 2,000 years. The Corinthian church was not different from today because they had the same issue about resurrection. Some of them didn’t believe in resurrection: “there is no resurrection of the dead” (15:12). Their claim is that DEAD PEOPLE CANNOT BE ALIVE AGAIN. In other words, DEATH is stronger than anything. Nothing or nobody can overcome DEATH.Today’s passage is Paul’s response to those people. Paul’s response is this: (2) Yes, death is certain. But there is something even more certain: the dead will rise again—there is resurrection.
NO RESURRECTION? (vv. 12-19)
Paul asks: OK, you say there is no resurrection. Then what happens? A serious problem arises, right? What is it?
THE MOST SERIOUS PROBLEM: If there is no resurrection, then “not even Christ has been raised” (vv. 13, 16). Paul continues: (1) If there is no resurrection, and (2) so if Christ has not been raised, then what does it mean? Many subsequent problems:
#PROBLEM 1
“Our preaching is in vain” (v. 14)
“Your faith is in vain” (v. 14)
Here “in vain” means “empty,” “without basis,” or “no foundation whatever.” So, if Jesus was killed and never resurrected, what Paul has been preaching is completely empty and your believing has not foundation, which means this whole gospel and Christianity is waste of time.
The same applies to us who are living in the twenty-first century: if Christ was not resurrected, my preaching now is empty, and (I’m very sorry to say this) your faith is without basis. So, if there was no resurrection of Jesus, then we should stop now and go home, and never come back.
#PROBLEM 2
“Your faith is futile” (v. 17)
“You are still in your sins” (v. 17)
Again, your faith is futile—this, too, means your faith is completely empty. It has no content or object; your faith is meaningless and powerless if Christ has not been raised—because (1) the object of your faith Jesus has been destroyed by death; (2) the content of your faith Jesus failed to overcome sin and death.
As a result, you are still in your sins because Jesus didn’t prevail the power of sin and death. If Jesus has not been risen, it means he lost the battle, and therefore his blood cannot save us from our sins. So, if Christ has not been resurrected, (I’m sorry) you’re still in your sins.
#PROBLEM 3
“those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished” (v. 18)
If there was no resurrection of Jesus Christ, then all the past Christians/believers who have died have actually PERISHED—they were not saved but fell into a state of eternal condemnation and judgment because they couldn’t overcome the guilt and power of sin. That’s a terrible statement, isn’t it?
What is even more terrible is that this means that we (you and I) too will PERISH forever when we die. There is no hope. Your Savior is dead. So, you’ll perish forever.
That’s why Paul says, “If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied” (v. 19)
If Jesus was not resurrected, then Paul and his companions are the most pitiable people. Why? Because they endured great suffering for the sake of spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. But it turns out that it is useless.
Likewise, if Jesus was not resurrected, then we (you and I) are of all people most to be pitied (especially, pastor Murai and myself).
BUT CHRIST IS RISEN (v. 20)
But Paul declares: “But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep” (v. 20)
This is the foundation upon which we stand today. Jesus’ resurrection was a “space-time occurrence in history” (Packer). We believe and confess every Sunday with the Apostle’s Creed: “He rose again from the dead.” Jesus is alive. Your Savior is alive! And where is he now? “He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty” He is now sitting at the right hand of God, praying for us. This faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus is our core foundation.
Although Paul simply declares “Jesus is risen” and does not explain, I think we can look for some evidence for his resurrection.
#1. All the Gospel Books Witness It
We have 4 Gospel books: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. All 4 Gospel books highlight the resurrection of Christ. They were the writings of eyewitnesses of Jesus. The Gospel books were written and circulated when many of those eyewitnesses were still alive. And those eyewitnesses all received and read the resurrection records of the Gospel books. They all say that Jesus rose from the grave.
#2. Jesus Appeared to Many People
Paul says in 1 Cor 15 that Jesus appeared to many people: (1) to Peter; (2) then to the twelve disciples; (3) then to more than five hundred brothers at one time; (4) then to James; (5) then to all the apostles; (6) and finally Jesus appeared also to Paul himself. Jesus appeared many times to many people. In the Gospels, there are 11 portions that say the resurrected Jesus appeared to people: Jesus appeared to “men and women, individuals, couples, groups, and at least one crowd. The locations were inside and outside, in different places, and at different times of the day.” People touched him physically, heard his voice, saw him, and the resurrected Jesus even ate food in the presence of witnesses.
#3. So Many Gave their Lives for their Faith in the resurrected Jesus
In the early church (esp. 1st–2nd centuries): so many eyewitnesses and believers were killed for their faith in the resurrected Jesus. The fact that so many men and women were willing to rather give up their lives to keep their faith in Christ can mean that the resurrection of Jesus was real. 2,000 years later, even today, we have numerous Christians who can gladly give up their lives for the resurrected Christ—a lie cannot live for such a long time.
#4. Paul’s Dramatic Conversion
Another significant piece of resurrection evidence is Paul’s conversion. We’ve been studying the book of Acts for a long time now. And we all saw how much Paul changed after he saw the risen Jesus on the way to Damascus. He strongly claims that the risen Lord appeared to him. What’s even more amazing about his conversion was that, after seeing the risen Christ, Paul left the powerful and wealthy mainstream Judaism and embraced “a despised, persecuted group [Christ-followers] with no power or money.” If Paul had not really seen Jesus, he would have never left Judaism and joined the Christ-followers.
So, this Paul proclaims in v. 20: “But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep” (v. 20)
Brothers and sisters, Jesus has been raised from the dead! But what does it mean to us? I will share two meanings
Meaning 1: Our Justification
Most of all, Jesus’ resurrection shows:
- if you put your faith in Jesus Christ,
- then you are made right with God: “raised for our justification”
Rom 4:25 shows that Jesus’ resurrection is for us. But how?
Jesus carried our sins upon himself when he was crucified on the cross. He was full of sin—but not his own but my sin and yours. He gave himself up as a sacrifice. And as a sacrifice, Jesus was killed: “delivered up for our trespasses.”
And this perfect sacrifice [Jesus Christ himself] completely satisfied God. He fully punished our sins in Christ. And God’s divine justice was satisfied. How do we know it? The resurrection of Jesus!
- God received the death of Christ as the perfect sacrifice for our sins.
- God raised Christ from the grave because it was impossible for death to hold Jesus who had no sin.
That’s why:
- if you put your faith in Jesus Christ,
- then God is completely satisfied, and you are saved.
This is the first meaning of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Meaning 2: Our Future Resurrection
Paul says that Christ is the first fruits (v. 20). The second meaning of the resurrection of Jesus is that the power of his resurrection is extended to all of us. Jesus’ resurrection is not just for himself; it is for all of us as well. 2,000 years ago, when the Spirit of God raised Jesus from the tomb, he also raised up all who are in Christ. Christ’s resurrection shows that we will experience the same thing in our future resurrection: those who have faith in Christ will receive the glorious resurrection body like Jesus’ resurrected body.
ALIVE: Those who are alive when Christ returns à they will “undergo a similar [Christ’s] transformation.”
DEAD: Christians who die before Christ returns “will be ‘clothed’ with their new body . . . As a distinct event, at or after the time of the old body’s return to dust” And when Christ returns, they will rise from the grave and receive the resurrection body.
Then our bodies will be incorruptible forever.
- Your body will never again deteriorate.
- Your body will never again get weak or sick.
- Your body will be completely free from diseases.
- Your body will live forever in glory in the presence of the Trinity.
1 Cor 15:53-55: For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written:
“Death is swallowed up in victory.”
“O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”
CLOSING
We gather for worship on Sundays—because we want to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. The resurrected Jesus is now alive, sitting at the right hand of God, praying for us—and he will surely come back. And we’ll all receive our resurrection bodies and live in his kingdom forever and ever.
