Today, we begin our new sermon series on Philippians.

Paul and Silas arrived in Philippi during their second missionary journey. Philippi was a city in Macedonia and was a Roman colony. Many of the Roman Empire’s retired soldiers settled in Philippi.

There, Paul and Silas proclaimed the gospel. The first person who became a Christian was a woman named Lydia. She and her entire household were baptized. And she welcomed Paul and Silas into her home. That marked the beginning of the Philippian church community.

Paul and the Philippian church were always in a good relationship. Lydia was a businesswoman who sold purple goods. She owned a house and welcomed Paul and Silas to stay there. From that time onward, the Philippians consistently supported Paul’s ministry financially, even after he left Philippi.

About ten years later, Paul was in Rome. He was in prison. The Philippian church sent Paul another financial gift. This time, Epaphroditus, a member of the Philippian church, brought the gift to Paul in Rome.

However, Epaphroditus became seriously ill while he was with Paul. He almost died, but miraculously, he recovered. So, Paul wanted to send him back to Philippi. Paul also wrote a letter to the Philippian church and had Epaphroditus carry it. That is Paul’s letter to the Philippians. Today, we will see the opening section of the letter.

1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus,

I said this is Paul’s letter to the Philippians. But we see Timothy’s name, too. It doesn’t mean that Timothy co-wrote the letter. Paul included Timothy’s name here probably because Paul was planning to send Timothy to Philippi soon (2:19). Paul included his name for that reason.

And Paul introduces himself as a “servant” of Christ Jesus. But a better translation is “slave.” More than anything else, Paul sees himself as Jesus’ slave. We all have a negative impression of the word “slave,” don’t we? Do you want to be a slave to Mr. Smith? No, you don’t. Do you want to be a slave to your company? You don’t think so. You don’t even want to be a slave to your own country, do you? Nobody wants to be a slave to anyone or anything.

What about Jesus? Would you be happy to be his slave? Absolutely! I would be more than happy to be a slave of Christ Jesus! Wouldn’t you?

C. T. Studd (1860–1931) came from a wealthy and prominent family in the UK. But he left everything behind and served as a missionary in China, India, and the Belgian Congo. He said, “If Jesus Christ be God and died for me, then no sacrifice can be too great for me to make for him.” What he meant was that he had no problem being a slave to Jesus if Jesus is God and had died for him.

Paul was a slave of Christ. So was Timothy. So am I. So are you. Please remember: This is not a burden—this is an absolute privilege and honor, because Jesus is God and died for us.

And Paul calls them “saints” (v. 1b): To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the overseers and deacons.

More than anything else, Christians are “holy people”—that is, people who are separated from the world. We live in the world; but we don’t belong to this world—we belong to God. That’s our identity. That’s why Paul calls them saints. And the Philippians were saints because they were in Christ Jesus, even though they were physically in this world (at Philippi).

Applying this to us, we are saints in Christ Jesus who live in Toronto. This is our true identity.

And as saints in Christ Jesus living in Toronto, what do we experience? We experience grace and peace: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. We don’t deserve God’s love, but God loves us in Christ. That is grace. And peace comes as a result of that grace. God gave us grace. So now we have peace with God. And if we have peace with God, we can rejoice in any circumstances.

A clear example is Paul himself. He says he is praying for the Philippians with joy! (v. 4). Let me remind you again that he is now in prison—to be precise, he is under house arrest in Rome. But he still doesn’t have his freedom, and it is possible that he could be executed soon. His death may be imminent. But with joy! he is praying for the Philippian church, not for himself. Paul has deeply experienced God’s grace given through Jesus and has peace with God. That is why he rejoices even in prison.

Furthermore, Paul urges the Philippian believers to remember that God will surely keep their salvation: 6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. Salvation work is begun by God and finished by him. God never loses his people. In Rom 8, Paul emphasizes that nothing can take his children away from the love of God in Jesus Christ.

Paul does say something about his difficult situation: 7b . . . for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. What he is saying is that he was accused, found guilty, and imprisoned, all because of his fight for the gospel. He didn’t commit crimes. He didn’t break any laws. He defended the gospel. He confirmed the gospel wherever he went. That was why he was accused and imprisoned.

To close this opening section, Paul offers prayers for the Philippian Christians.

His first prayer was so that their love, knowledge, and all discernment may abound (v. 9). First Corinthians 13 says that if you have not love, you are nothing and gain nothing. The final litmus test of your faith in Jesus is the love you have for God and for others. Do you love God? Do you love Jesus? And do you love your spouse? Are you willing to listen to your spouse’s voice without judging them? Do you love your brothers and sisters here? Are you willing to accept your brothers and sisters as they are, without trying to change them?

Paul’s prayer is that their love may be based on knowledge and discernment. What knowledge? It is the precise knowledge of the gospel. The gospel is the good news that Jesus Christ died in our place for our sins and was raised again, conquering the power of sin and death, so that whoever believes in him will be freely given forgiveness of sins and a right standing with God for them to have eternal life and everlasting joy. Without this knowledge, love cannot properly stand. Paul warns in Rom 10:2 that the Jews had a zeal for God, but their love for God was not based on knowledge of the gospel. Ironically, their zeal led them to reject the Messiah, Jesus Christ.

And his second prayer was that they would be able to approve what is excellent and be pure and blameless until Jesus returns (v. 10). One who knows the gospel and loves God and others will be able to approve what is excellent—in other words, he will be able to discern what the will of God is (Rom 12:2). And if he knows the will of God, he will strive to remain pure and blameless until Jesus comes back. Of course, this does not mean that he will remain perfect. Rather, it means that he will never stop growing as a genuine Christ-follower.

Paul’s third prayer for the Philippians was that they may be filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ (v. 11a). If you truly follow Christ, your life will—and must—be filled with the fruit of godly deeds and actions. This is an essential result of a right relationship with God through Christ (Peter T. O’Brien, NIGTC). This is how God accomplishes the gospel promise in v. 6: God began a good work in you, and he will bring it to completion by filling you with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ. Yes, this growth process will be completed when Jesus returns. But the growth of someone who has truly put his faith in Christ becomes “increasingly evident” (O’Brien) to others.

Brothers and sisters, let me remind you again that Paul is not writing this letter at a fancy desk in a cozy room. He is writing it while imprisoned. And he has done nothing wrong to deserve imprisonment. Yet the letter is full of joy and thanksgiving. Among all his letters, Philippians is one in which Paul uses the word “rejoice” most frequently. How is it even possible?

It’s because Paul had the joy of the gospel. He had received God’s grace through Christ and had peace with God. The joy of the gospel ruled his life, regardless of his circumstances. We will continue to see this theme throughout the letter. But let me ask these questions: (i) Do you have the joy of the gospel? (ii) Is it ruling your life, regardless of your circumstances?
