創世記 34章

Genesis 34
25 On the third day, when they were sore, two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, took their swords and came against the city while it felt secure and killed all the males. 26 They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the sword and took Dinah out of Shechem’s house and went away. 27 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister. 28 They took their flocks and their herds, their donkeys, and whatever was in the city and in the field. 29 All their wealth, all their little ones and their wives, all that was in the houses, they captured and plundered. 30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble on me by making me stink to the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites and the Perizzites. My numbers are few, and if they gather themselves against me and attack me, I shall be destroyed, both I and my household.” 31 But they said, “Should he treat our sister like a prostitute?”
Genesis 35
1 God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel and dwell there. Make an altar there to the God who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau.” 2 So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, “Put away the foreign gods that are among you and purify yourselves and change your garments. 3 Then let us arise and go up to Bethel, so that I may make there an altar to the God who answers me in the day of my distress and has been with me wherever I have gone.” 4 So they gave to Jacob all the foreign gods that they had, and the rings that were in their ears. Jacob hid them under the terebinth tree that was near Shechem. 5 And as they journeyed, a terror from God fell upon the cities that were around them, so that they did not pursue the sons of Jacob. 6 And Jacob came to Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him, 7 and there he built an altar and called the place El-bethel, because there God had revealed himself to him when he fled from his brother.
OPENING
In Psalm 23, David says this:
1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Such a beautiful poem by King David! What does he mean when he says, “The LORD is my shepherd” or “He leads me”? I’d like us to think about this question as we study today’s passage.
In many places of the Bible, God is pleased to be called the God of “Abraham,” the God of “Isaac,” and the God of “Jacob.” There is something special about these three men: (1) Abraham was called by God in Gen 12, and he became the father of the Israelites; (2) Isaac was Abraham’s son; (3) Jacob was one of Isaac’s sons. What’s important to know about Jacob is that he later had 12 sons. And these twelve sons became the 12 tribes of Israel. In other words, these three men (Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob) were the founding fathers of the Israeli nation, so to speak.
Today’s passage (Gen 35) is about Jacob. And as we know, he comes with a fascinating story.
CONTEXT
Last Sunday, we saw that Jacob and his family settled in the city of Shechem. Before we get to Gen 35, let’s first go back a little bit and think about Jacob’s past life.
When Isaac was 60, his wife Rebekah gave birth to twin boys; they’re Esau and Jacob. But God chose Jacob according to his pleasing will. God called him. And God began to lead Jacob’s life.
- Isaac tried to bless the older son Esau, but he ended up blessing Jacob instead. Isaac thought he was blessing Esau, but God made him bless the other one, Jacob. Esau was so close to being blessed by Isaac his father, but God didn’t allow it to happen because it was Jacob that God had chosen.
- After that blessing, did Jacob live happily ever after? Not at all. He had to flee; Jacob had to run away from his angry brother Esau.
- On his way to Haran, Jacob reached a certain place and decided to spend the night there. He had a dream. God appeared in his dream and blessed Jacob:
- “I will give you this land”
- “You’ll have many descendants”
- “All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring”
- “I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go”
- “I will bring you back to this land”
- “I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you”
- Aren’t these amazing blessings? Did Jacob deserve them? I don’t think so. Did he do something great to impress God? I doubt it. All things were given to him as an undeserved gift from God, and Jacob took them by faith. He put his trust in the LORD who had called him. And Jacob named that place “Bethel” (28:25), meaning the “House of God.”
- Then, Jacob finally arrived at his uncle’s place. He worked for Laban his uncle for 20 years. These twenty years must have been hard on him. He was away from his own parents and homeland. It was a tough time. But, in the middle of all this, God was working hard to keep his promises. Jacob established a large family; in fact, he was forming the Israelite nation without even knowing it.
- When Jacob left Laban to go back to his parents’ land, he was afraid of his brother Esau. But Jacob trusted in God’s promises at Bethel. He wrestled with God. And now God gave him a new name “Israel” and blessed him again.
- God answered his prayers. He protected Jacob from Esau. The encounter was peaceful. Instead of following Esau, Jacob moved to the west to Sukkoth and to Shechem.
And in Shechem, a tragic thing happened: A guy named “Shechem” raped Jacob’s daughter Dinah. Dinah’s eleven brothers heard about it and got furious. You know Shechem made a horrible mistake. Did he know that Dinah had 11 big brothers? Probably he didn’t.
Shechem’s father Hamor wanted to arrange a marriage (Shechem and Dinah). Hamor suggested intermarriages. Jacob and his family could settle and be prosperous in Shechem. And Dinah’s brothers pretend to agree, and they said: We’ll give you Dinah on one condition: circumcise all your men (34:15). And Hamor and every man were circumcised.
TEXT
And 3 days later, when those circumcised men were still sore, Simeon and Levi attacked and killed every male and rescued their sister Dinah.
It was not all. Jacob’s other sons all came and completely destroyed the city. But Jacob was not happy about this revenge. However, his sons (Dinah’s brothers) were confident that they had done the right thing: “Should he treat our sister like a prostitute?” (v. 31)
Indeed, it was a terrible and tragic incident. And Jacob was distressed. His heart was broken. He felt threatened. He knew that he and his entire house were now vulnerable to another attacks. He and his household could be entirely wiped out.
So, then, (i.e. after the tragedy in Shechem), God appeared again and spoke to Jacob: “Arise, go up to Bethel and dwell there. Make an altar there to the God who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau” (v. 1).
Remember? 20 years ago, the LORD blessed Jacob, saying:
- “I will give you this land”
- “You’ll have many descendants”
- “All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring”
- “I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go”“I will bring you back to this land”
- “I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you”
Now God is fulfilling his promise because he is bringing Jacob back to Bethel. It’s the place where God appeared to him and blessed him while Jacob was running away from Esau 20 years ago.
What’s surprising here is that Jacob’s family had been collecting foreign gods and idols.
Returning to Bethel, Jacob knew that he and his family must choose one: God Almighty? or the foreign gods? So, all his family members brought their foreign gods and their earrings, and Jacob buried them under the oak tree at Shechem.
There is no middle ground before God: you will either (1) obey God and go up to Bethel or (2) serve the foreign gods and stay in Shechem. It’s not a both/and- but an either/or-decision. Choose either God or idols. You cannot choose both.
Then Jacob says: “Come, let us go up to Bethel, where I will build an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone” (35:3).
According to Jacob, what is God like?
(1) God answered Jacob in the day of his distress
(2) God was with him wherever he went
Jacob’s understanding of God is truly amazing because we know that Jacob’s life was nothing like a walk in the park. His life was hard. And this is right after his daughter was defiled by a man in Shechem. But to Jacob, God was still one who answered his prayers. To Jacob, God was still one who was always with him wherever he went. This is an amazing confession of faith.
e.g. When we feel like our lives are good, we feel God is present in my life. God is good. But when things go wrong and the heavy load of life wears you down, you feel like yelling, Where is God? This is such a basic human attitude. It doesn’t take any training to think like that. Anybody can do that: When life is good, you praise God. When life is hard, you blame God.
But Jacob saw that God was with him in every situation in every moment. Even when he had to go through many hard things in his life. Even when he was grieving about his own daughter. He didn’t doubt the faithfulness of God.
And going up to Bethel was not an easy thing to do because of what happened in Gen 34. Jacob knew he and his household were surrounded by imminent violence and terror. People from another towns may strike back. There was no safe place to hide in. It seemed they were locked in Shechem forever.
But, with great faith in God, Jacob decides to obey to go up to Bethel. Jacob is again taking a step of faith. He will do what God tells him to do, no matter what. So, they set out (35:5). Then what happened? “The terror of God fell upon the towns all around them so that no one pursued them” (35:5).
Finally, Jacob and his family arrived in Bethel (35:6). He built an altar (35:7). And he called the place El Bethel (35:7) ‘God of Bethel’: “because it was there that God revealed himself to him when he was fleeing from his brother.”
APPLICATIONS
4 concerning what God does for us.
- GOD CALLS: Our God is sovereign. Just like he chose Jacob in his sovereignty, he has called you and me in his sovereign will, and here we are today.
- GOD LEADS: God called Jacob. God loved Jacob and blessed him. But it didn’t mean that his life would be just easy; it simply means God will be with us in whatever situation.
- GOD REVEALS: The LORD appeared to Jacob in Bethel in Gen 28. He revealed himself to Jacob although he wasn’t under [any obligation] to do so. In today’s passage, Gene 35, God revealed himself again to Jacob, telling him to go up to Bethel. We can never know God unless he first makes himself known. God is infinite but he is knowable—because he reveals himself to us. Even today, God makes himself known to us in our Scripture reading and prayers.
- GOD KEEPS HIS PROMISES: God promised to Jacob in Gen 28 that he will bring him back to this land. In Gen 35, God is faithfully fulfilling his promise by bringing Jacob back to Bethel. And during those twenty years, God made Jacob into a great household with twelve sons; the LORD was indeed creating the Israeli nation.
CLOSING
In Psalm 23:4, David says this: Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
So, when we say, “God is with us,” what do we mean by that?
It doesn’t mean the absence of troubles.
It simply means the presence of God in every moment, even when we walk through the valley of the shadow of death.
