OPENING

We began our sermon series on Exodus in January. We have been studying this book for almost nine months, and today, we conclude our sermon series.

The book of Exodus has three main parts. First, God delivered Israel from slavery in Egypt. Second, God gave Israel his law. Third, God commanded Israel to build the tabernacle.

These three parts beautifully demonstrate God’s saving work on behalf of his people. First, the deliverance shows that God saves his people. Second, the giving of the law shows that God makes his people holy. Third, the building of the tabernacle shows that God is with his people.

CONTEXT

In Exodus 35–39, Moses recounts some of the instructions given earlier in the book. For example, he talks about the Sabbath (ch. 35), the tabernacle (ch. 36), the Ark (ch. 37), other elements of the tabernacle (ch. 38), and the priestly garments (ch. 39).

And what is amazing about Israel is that they made everything exactly as the Lord had commanded Moses (39:1). This phrase “as the Lord had commanded Moses” appears nine times in ch. 39 alone. It is surprising because, so far, we have seen Israel repeatedly disobeying God. What happened to them? Their idolatry in ch. 32 brought about God’s anger. But Moses pleaded with God for forgiveness, and God accepted Moses’ prayer and forgave Israel. They experienced God’s forgiveness. Then, when the law was recounted, Israel was willing to obey. That was the foundation of their incredible transformation.

TEXT

39:42 According to all that the Lord had commanded Moses, so the people of Israel had done all the work.

The Japanese are well known for their attention to detail. This may be a wacky thought, but I sometimes imagine: What if God had chosen Japan instead of Israel? I am sure the people of Japan would have done everything exactly according to all that the Lord had commanded.

I am glad to see that Israel finally obeyed God and did what the Lord had commanded them. And they did it well: 39:43 And Moses saw all the work, and behold, they had done it; as the Lord had commanded, so had they done it. Then Moses blessed them.

In the final chapter of Exodus, the Lord commanded Moses to erect, anoint, and consecrate the tabernacle. And Moses obeyed. 40:16 This Moses did; according to all that the Lord commanded him, so he did.

40:33 And he erected the court around the tabernacle and the altar and set up the screen of the gate of the court. So, Moses finished the work.

Moses and Israel obeyed God. And it took almost a year for them to make and erect the tabernacle and all its furnishings.

Some people may wonder whether it was a waste of time because they were not moving any farther through the wilderness toward the Promised Land. They were still at the foot of Mount Sinai, making the tent.

But no one seemed to complain. Everyone obeyed. The one year spent building the tabernacle was never a waste of time. The time spent in obedience to God is never wasted because we experience God’s presence more deeply. I believe that the year Israel spent obeying God’s command to build the tabernacle was a time of joy and hope.

And when Israel finally obeyed, they saw the glory of God.

40:34 Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. 35 And Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud settled on it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.

Do you remember that God was with Moses alone on the top of Mount Sinai? But now, God has descended to be with the Israelites: the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle (v. 35).

Not only did God’s glory fill the tabernacle, but God also led the Israelites.

40:36 Throughout all their journeys, whenever the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the people of Israel would set out. 37 But if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not set out till the day that it was taken up. 38 For the cloud of the Lord was on the tabernacle by day, and fire was in it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel throughout all their journeys.

When I was in the army, in 1997, I took part in a training program called “LandNav,” short for “Land Navigation.” It was one of the core training programs in which soldiers learned how to use a map and compass to navigate unfamiliar terrain and reach a destination quickly and safely. I was given a map and a compass. My task was to go to seven locations identified by coordinates, write down the numbers at each location, and return to the base within three hours. Just an hour into my navigation, I got lost in the mountains! I failed my mission. The reason I failed was that I kept my eyes glued to the map and compass and ignored the little paths before me. So, I ended up getting lost in the middle of a thick winter forest. I was scared.

What do verses 36–38 teach us? They show us that God would never let his people get lost; he would lead his people by day, by night, and throughout all their journeys (v. 38). All the Israelites had to do was keep their eyes on the glory of God and follow it. If they didn’t, they would get lost, just as I got lost in the mountains because I ignored the paths before me. The tabernacle and the glory of God upon it were the visual symbols God gave Israel to remind them of his ongoing presence among them in the middle of the desert.

APPLICATION

If Israel had the tabernacle, a visual symbol of God’s presence among them, what do we have today? In the midst of our lives, what do we have to demonstrate God’s presence among us?

It is the Word of God, and Jesus Christ is the Word. John 1:1 says, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And John 1:14a says, And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory. The Word came down to “tabernacle” among us. In Moses’ time, God took up a post among the Israelites through the tabernacle. Today, through his Son, Jesus Christ, God is taking up a post among his people just as he had done for ancient Israel. Therefore, when Jesus was born, he was called “Immanuel,” which means “God with us.”

So, what is a one-sentence summary of the book of Exodus? It is this: God rescues, dwells with, and leads his people through the wilderness, and the tabernacle points forward to the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ.

Then, what is the most important act of obedience God is looking for in us? It is to rest in the Son of God and in him alone for your salvation.

Just as God dwelt among the Israelites through the tabernacle and faithfully led them through the desert, he calls those who receive Jesus as their Savior his “children” and faithfully leads them through their lives.

Another amazing thing is that, just as God showed his glory to the Israelites through the tabernacle, he also allows us to experience his glory through Christ.

How? In Christ, God gives us faith and strength so that, even when our lives lead us through the dark valley of the shadow of death, we are led into a deeper knowledge of God. And once we have come to know and experience God more deeply, we are captivated by his glory. And the more we experience his glory, the more we yearn for it. Ultimately, our chief end becomes to “glorify God and to enjoy him forever” (Westminster Shorter Catechism #1).

CLOSING

This is a lifelong journey; it does not happen overnight. Every day, every single moment, let us always remember that we are following God in Christ through the desert called “life.” It can be challenging at times, but it is incomparably satisfying because, in this journey, God reveals to us his glory.
