OPENING

Many years ago, when I was in university, I shared the gospel with a senpai. He listened to my gospel presentation carefully but declined. His reason, however, was surprising: “If I become a Christian, I’ll have to quit smoking. I don’t want to do that. I will go to church in the future, once I quit smoking.” His thinking was this: God doesn’t allow smokers to come to him. I tried to explain to him that God was not like that, but it didn’t work.

Surprisingly, some Christians think along the same lines: “My prayer life is not good enough, so I don’t think God likes me”; “I skip Sunday services too often. I’m not sure what God thinks of me, so I’ll keep him at a distance”; “My family is not what it should be, so I think God is upset with me.”

Many non-Christians and Christians have one thing in common: They think they can approach God if they are good, and they think they can’t approach God if they are not good. But the Christian gospel subverts such common sense.

CONTEXT

We learned about the Ark of the Covenant last Sunday. The Ark demonstrated God’s presence among the Israelites and his mercy toward them. In Exodus 26–31, God commands them to build the tabernacle and establish the priesthood. And the Ark will be placed in that tabernacle.

TEXT

The tabernacle was a portable tent that represented God’s presence among the Israelites. The inside was divided into two sections: the Most Holy Place and the Holy Place. And the Ark was placed in the Most Holy Place. And the Most Holy Place and the Holy Place were separated by a veil (curtain) placed between them (26:33).

And this curtain is an interesting thing. It’s almost a paradox. Why? First, it means that you can enter the Most Holy Place because it is not a wall; anybody can easily go through the curtain. Second, however, it means that you cannot enter the Most Holy Place because the veil separates it from the Holy Place, keeping anyone from entering—it’s almost like God is saying, I am here, but you cannot come all the way in. So, it’s a paradox.

In Exodus 28, God commands the Israelites to make garments for the priests. The priestly garments consisted of the turban, the robe, the ephod, and the breastplate. One interesting object was the gold plate put on the turban. And the gold plate had the words: “Holy to the Lord” (28:36–37).

Who was the priest? He was a mediator between God and Israel. Even when the Israelites brought offerings to God, they would commit errors, and their offerings would be tainted by their sin. So, the priest had to put the gold plate, inscribed with the words “Holy to the Lord” on his forehead when he approached the holy God. Then God would accept their offerings.

And in Exod 29, God gave them an amazing promise: 29:45 I will dwell among the people of Israel and will be their God. 46 And they shall know that I am the Lord their God, who brought them out of the land of Egypt that I might dwell among them. I am the Lord their God.

This means that God didn’t just save Israel to get them out of slavery. Rather, he saved them to get them into a relationship with him. When God saves a man, he saves him not only out of darkness but also into an eternal relationship with him. So, there are only two kinds of people in the world: (1) those who live in a relationship with God; and (2) those who live without God. Israel was blessed by God’s grace to be part of the first group. So are we. And vv. 45–46 show God’s unrelenting pursuit of Israel: 45 I will dwell among the people of Israel and will be their God. 46a And they shall know that I am the Lord their God,

And in Exodus 31, God finishes instructing about the tabernacle. And he gave to Moses, when he had finished speaking with him on Mount Sinai, the two tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God (v. 18). And these tablets were to be placed into the Ark of the Covenant.

APPLICATION

The Veil Torn in Two

The veil’s message was clear: Sinful Israel could not come all the way in to the holy God. Undeniably, the curtain represented the separation between God and humanity.

But what happened when Jesus died on the cross? Matt 27:51 says, The curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The curtain that separated God from humanity was torn in two. The separation was removed. Jesus opened the way for us to enter the holy presence of God. That means those who are in Christ can draw near to God freely and without fear. If you have put your faith in Jesus, you have intimate access to God; you have immediate access to God in Christ.

However, it was not like that in Moses’ time. There was the veil, and it was to remain. Sinful Israel was not allowed to enter the presence of God.

Today, too often, believers act as if they are living in Moses’ time. That is, they treat God as if the curtain were still up. For example, some Christians keep relying on their own merits to go through the curtain; they feel like they must “cleanse” themselves before they can talk to God (just like the senpai who thought he had to quit smoking before he could talk to God); they think they must be emotionally and spiritually ready to approach God; they think they have to be “good” Christians for them to be able to approach God; or they feel that if their family is not in good shape, they don’t deserve to talk to God.

If there is anyone among us who feels like that, I want to encourage you today.

Hebrews 10:19 says, We have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus. It teaches us where our true confidence should be found: in our own merits, or in the blood of Jesus? It is in the blood of Jesus!

Please remember: When you put your faith in Jesus, you were justified by his blood. It is by the blood of Jesus that you can enter the presence of God gladly and confidently. When Jesus paid the full price for your sins, the curtain was torn in two, from top to bottom.

And no matter where you find yourself today, you can approach God in prayer. And God will surely listen when you approach him in Christ, because he honors his own Son.

The Perfect Mediator

Even the Israelites’ offerings were always tainted by their sin. So, God appointed a human mediator—the priest—and commanded him to put the gold plate that read “Holy to the Lord” on his forehead. Then God would forgive them and accept their offerings.

But this human priest was only temporary. And in fact, he was not holy at all himself. That’s why he had to wear the “Holy to the Lord” plate on his forehead. And Aaron, the priest, was far from being perfect. Next Sunday, in Exodus 32, you will see how terrible Aaron was.

But Jesus is our great High Priest. And he doesn’t need to wear the “Holy to the Lord” sign because he is holy to God forever.

The tabernacle system shows that God does not accept us based on our own strengths or merits. Our acceptance has always been based on the perfection of our Mediator. Jesus is eternally perfect and holy. That’s why God eternally accepts those who are in Christ.

Think about our own worship services. What we do during worship is, in many ways, imperfect. Do we always worship God in truth and spirit perfectly? I don’t think so. Too often, we cannot even stay focused on God during this one-hour service. The acceptance of our worship is never based on the quality of our worship, but on Christ, who is eternally holy.

CLOSING

In Exodus 25–31, it is truly remarkable to see how God continually advanced his plan to be Israel’s God and to dwell among them. Of course, Israel was far from being holy and obedient. Yet God never stopped pursuing his desire to dwell with them through the tabernacle.

John 1:14a says this: And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory. When John says, “The Word dwelt among us,” he means that Jesus “tabernacled” among us. What does it mean? It means that the tabernacle in Exodus is pointing to the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ.

In Moses’ time, God took up a post among the Israelites through the tabernacle. Today, through his Son, Jesus Christ, God is taking up a post among his people just as he had done for ancient Israel.
