Exodus 19:1-8 Israel at Mount Sinai
OPENING
Have you ever ridden a camel? I have.
When my seminary classmates and I visited Mount Sinai, we climbed the mountain to watch the sunrise. We got up around 2 a.m., rented camels, and rode them for about two hours to avoid the steepest part of the hike. You cannot ride a camel all the way to the summit. After passing the steepest section, we got off the camels, continued on foot, and reached the summit. We watched the sunrise from the top of Mount Sinai. It was beautiful.
Mount Sinai is located in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula. It is a 2K-meter (2,285m) mountain. Cf. To put its height in perspective: compare Mount Fuji (3.7K meters) and Mount Sinai. Its landscape is harsh and very rocky, and as you can see, there are barely any trees. But it really is a beautiful place.
CONTEXT
And when you’re on Mount Sinai, you would think about two things: Moses and Israel.
That’s what I did.
I thought about Moses encountering God on top of this mountain and receiving the Ten Commandments and the Law from God. Just thinking about it would make you shiver with excitement.
I also thought about Israel—the people who had been chosen by God and yet repeatedly disobeyed and grumbled.
It’s been three months since they escaped from Egypt. And they have now arrived at Mt. Sinai. They didn’t climb up the mountain; they just encamped at the foot of Mount Sinai.
TEXT
And Moses went up the mountain, and the LORD God appeared to him and spoke to him on the mountain.
“You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself” (v. 4)
This is God’s reminder of his saving work for his people Israel: I punished your enemies, carried you, and brought you to myself.
God emphasizes that the Israelites could never deny this because they had all seen God’s saving acts for Israel.
They were only three months into this. But they had already experienced so many miracles of God: the ten plagues on Egypt; the parting of the Red Sea; the pillars of cloud and fire; manna and quails from heaven; water from the rock; and the battle with the Amalekites—it was literally one miracle after another. So, they could never deny God’s love toward them.
And God uses an “eagle” metaphor: I bore you on eagles’ wings (v. 4). What is an eagle? The eagle is the most powerful bird of prey; it is the king of the sky. If you could ride on the wings of an eagle, once you were flying, no one would dare to challenge you.
Let’s think about this for a few moments. I think this is more than just a metaphor because God himself said it. What I am saying is not that God was literally carrying them using an eagle’s wings—but that the reality that the metaphor describes is completely real. What is that reality? It means Gods protection and care for his people aren’t just poetic ideas but a tangible and real thing that can truly be experienced in the lives of God’s children.
And God says that he has brought Israel to himself (v. 4). It means that, when Egypt escaped from Egypt, Israel had a destination. Of course, God was leading them to the Promised Land. However, it was not their final destination; the ultimate destination of God’s people is God himself.
And God declared the beginning of his covenant: it has a condition and a consequence.
If you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, (v. 5), then what would happen?
#1. First of all, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples—because all the earth is mine (v. 5).
God is saying, “All the earth belongs to me; Egypt, Canaan, and all lands and oceans are mine. All peoples belong to me; the Israelites, Egyptians, Amalekites, and all people groups are mine.”
Although all peoples are God’s possession, God says he is now establishing a particular people as his treasured possession—and that was Israel. What an honor! What a privilege! Israel will be not only God’s possession but his treasured possession!
Was God in need of Israel? Not at all. God’s covenant declaration in v. 5 was the expression of his absolute grace stemming from his own goodness. Why did God choose Israel? God did so only because He took delight in His own will.
And this promise of the first blessing was about becoming God’s treasured possession—it had nothing to do with health, food, water, land, money, or power. The first and foremost blessing that Israel was about to receive and enjoy was belonging to God as his treasured possession, and that was more than enough.
#2. The next blessing God promised to Israel is in v. 6: and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.
e.g. Let’s imagine that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is visiting Toronto. There is a parade in the city. Let’s say I admire him very much, so I go to the parade to see him. His car passes by slowly. I think, “I admire him very much. I want to get a closer look at him.” I run toward his car, shouting, “Mr. Prime Minister!” with my arms open wide. What do you think will happen?
If I am lucky, the bodyguards will gently stop me. If I am not lucky, they may see me as a threat and respond accordingly (i.e. shoot me down). Why? Because I am not supposed to approach the Prime Minister. I am a stranger to him. I have no relationship with him. I am not even close to him. He does not know my name.
Do you know who can approach Mark Carney like that? His wife and his four daughters. His daughters, Cleo, Tess, Amelia, and Sasha, can go to their father at any time, and nobody will stop them. Of course, if he is in an important meeting, they may need to wait 😊. But once the official event is over, they can always see and talk to their father.
In v. 6, God declares that Israel can come closer to God—Israel shall be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation to God. Ps 148:14 says that the people of Israel are near to him. No other nations were allowed to approach God in such an intimate way.
What was the purpose of choosing Israel? First of all, God chose Israel to make them his treasured possession out of his grace. Second of all, God would make them a kingdom of priests and a holy nation (v. 6). What does a priest do? A priest will lead worship and sacrifice to lead people to God. Israel was to be a kingdom of priests because God would use Israel to lead other nations to God himself. God chose Israel out of his own grace and made them a kingdom of priests and a holy nation to bring his children from all nations to himself.
And when Moses came down the mountain to tell the people this news, they responded positively.
All the people answered together and said, “All that the LORD has spoken we will do” (v. 8a).
(8節a)
This is quite surprising, to be honest, even shocking, because we have seen their disbelief, grumbling, and selfishness so far. So, how can it even be possible that they answered in unison that they would obey God? It’s because God’s grace was once again working powerfully in their hearts. It gave them willing hearts to obey him.
APPLICATIONS
God’s Sovereign Grace (神の主権的な恵み)
Think for a moment about the greatest relationships in your life (e.g. husband and wife). Usually, a relationship requires two people meeting halfway; for any relationship to continue, there must be a mutual agreement and a shared effort. But when it comes to our salvation, it is a different story; it is God who takes the first step.
Who started the covenant we see today in Exod 19? It was not by the Israelites, for sure; they didn’t even desire to have one with God. This covenant relationship began solely from God’s goodness: God punished the Egyptians; he rescued the Israelites and carried them on eagles’ wings and brought them to himself. All the way, however, the Israelites never stopped grumbling against God. And now, God is once again gracious toward them and establishing a covenant relationship with this people to accept them as his treasured possession and make them a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.
Did they deserve it? Not at all—rather, Israel deserved God’s punishment for their disbelief and complaint.
So, what does Exod 19 teach us today? God loved Israel out of his sheer grace. Apart from that, there is no other way to explain Israel’s status.
The same applies to us. Exodus 19 is a powerful reminder that God loves us not because we deserve his love but because of his sovereign grace toward us. Before you asked, even before you were born, and even before the creation of the universe, God called your name and made you his treasured possession out of his amazing grace.
We are God’s Treasured Possession
But when Israel received God’s covenant and entered the covenant relationship with God, they completely misunderstood God’s true plan. When God said to them, 5 you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples . . . 6 and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation, they thought—and still think—that only Israel is God’s treasured possession. They drew clear lines dividing the world into Jews and non-Jews, determining who was in and who was out. To them, God’s covenant blessing belonged to only one nation: Israel.
But that was and is a serious misunderstanding of God’s bigger picture. When God said he would make Israel a kingdom of priests and a holy nation, he meant that Israel would bring God’s children from every nation back home to him. God never meant that he would only bless one nation. So, we should ask: How would it happen? And did it happen—did Israel become a kingdom of priests and a holy nation?
Do you remember what Jesus told the Samaritan woman in John 4:22? He said, “Salvation is from the Jews.” What did he mean by that? Did Jesus mean that the Jews would be the saviors of the world or that Israel would save the world? No. He meant that the Messiah would come from the Jews, from Israel. Jesus came from the tribe of Judah. So, yes, salvation came from the Jews because the Messiah came from Israel.
And when God said to them, 5 you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples . . . 6 and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation, God didn’t mean that he would accept and bless only one nation Israel. Who then is God’s treasured possession? Because Jesus came and paid the full price for your sins, the covenant is no longer defined by your ethnic lineage or your DNA; it is defined by your faith in Jesus. The promise is for all who believe in Christ—all who believe in Christ are God’s treasured possession.
That’s what the Apostle Peter says in 1 Pet 2:9: you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
Remember that you and I have received the very same royal titles once given to ancient Israel. Remember that we are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and God’s treasured possession—all because of our faith in Jesus, not because we are ethnically Jewish.
CLOSING
The greatest blessing a human being can ever experience is not wealth, fame, health, prosperity, or comfort. It is simply this: to belong to God.
You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself (v. 4)
Just as a father brings his children to himself, God brings his children to himself. This is the essence of salvation: God bringing his people to himself and rescuing them from eternal punishment.
