OPENING
Look at this map. In Jindo, South Korea, something interesting takes place every year around April and July. Every year around April and July, the sea parts between Jindo and Modo Island. When the tide recedes, a path through the sea opens up. The width is about 30 meters, and the path is 2.8 kilometers long. This sea “road” remains fully revealed for about an hour before closing back up. In 1975, the French Ambassador to Korea Pierre Landy introduced this phenomenon to a French newspaper as the “Korean version of the miracle of Moses.”

But as you can see in the photos, it is nowhere near being a precise picture of what happened at the Red Sea in Exodus 14.

Rather, a bit more correct depiction is found at my wife’s alma mater; she attended a Christian university, and the school built a unique structure that depicts the parting of the Red Sea. I think these are more precise because, when the Israelites were crossing the Red Sea on dry ground, they saw the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left (14:22).

But modern people—even including many theologians and biblical scholars—do not believe that the Red Sea event really happened. But I believe it is a true historical event that took place when Israel left Egypt. I believe it because Exodus is the Word of God, who is almighty; there is nothing impossible with him.
しかし、現代の人々、さらには多くの神学者や聖書学者さえも、紅海の出来事が本当に起こったとは信じていません。しかし私は、これがイスラエルがエジプトを去ったときに起きた、真の歴史的事実であると信じています。私はそれが事実だと信じています。なぜなら、出エジプト記は全能であられる神の言葉であり、神に不可能なことは何一つないからです。
31 Israel saw the great power that the Lord used against the Egyptians, so the people feared the Lord, and they believed in the Lord and in his servant Moses.
This verse makes me jealous because these people saw this incredible miracle with their own eyes!
So, what happened to them after they left Egypt?
31 イスラエルは、主がエジプトに行われた、この大いなる御力を見た。それで民は主を恐れ、主とそのしもべモーセを信じた。
この人々は、この信じられないような奇跡を自分の目で見たのですから、この聖句を読むと私は羨ましくなります！

CONTEXT
They traveled from Rameses to Succoth. And camped at Etham. And when they were traveling, the pillars of cloud and fire of God were guiding them. And in Exod 14, they arrived in and camped at Pi Hahiroth, which was between a place called Migdol and the Red Sea.
彼らはラメセズからスコテへと旅立ち、エタムに宿営しました。彼らが旅をしていたとき、神の雲の柱と火の柱が彼らを導いていました。そして出エジプト記14章で、彼らはミグドルと呼ばれる場所と紅海の間にある、ピ・ハヒロトに到着して宿営しました。
And it was when the Israelites camped there that Pharaoh decided to disobey God again! He thought it was best time to attack Israel because they were now stuck between Egypt and the sea.
イスラエルの民がそこに宿営していたまさにその時、ファラオは再び神に逆らうことを決意したのです！彼は、イスラエルがエジプトと海の間に挟まれて身動きが取れなくなっている今こそ、攻撃する絶好の機会だと考えました。
So that was a very difficult moment to Israel, and you might want to ask this question: What in the world is the purpose of such a challenge? God had a clear purpose: I will harden Pharaoh’s heart again; I will gain glory for myself (v. 4); God brought them to this place to reveal something amazing about himself to Israel and to Egypt—God’s incredible power to part the Red Sea. For them to see that power of God, they had to be stuck there first.

Now Pharaoh is pursuing them with his 600 chariots; the Egyptian forces are chasing them to kill them or bring them back to Egypt. Israel cannot fight back. There’s nowhere to hide. Israel is stuck. And when you’re stuck, your true self comes out.
今やファラオは600台の戦車を率いて彼らを追跡しています。エジプトの軍勢は彼らを殺すか、あるいはエジプトに連れ戻すために追いかけてきています。イスラエルは戦い返すことができません。隠れる場所もありません。イスラエルは袋小路に追い詰められました。そして、行き詰まったときにこそ、人の本性が出るものです。
10 . . . and they feared greatly. And the people of Israel cried out to the Lord. However, they prayed with a loud voice but had no faith. Their voices were loud and strong, but their faith in God was lacking. And they soon turned to Moses and Aaron and complained to them: 11b What have you done to us in bringing us out of Egypt? 12 Is not this what we said to you in Egypt: ‘Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”
10 「…イスラエルの子らは大いに恐れて、主に向かって叫んだ。 」しかし、彼らは大声で祈りはしたものの、信仰はありませんでした。彼らの声は大きく力強かったのですが、神への信仰が欠けていたのです。そして彼らはすぐにモーセとアロンに向かい、不平を言いました。11b「エジプトに墓がないからといって、荒野で死なせるために、あなたはわれわれを連れて来たのか。われわれをエジプトから連れ出したりして、いったい何ということをしてくれたのだ。12 エジプトであなたに『われわれのことにはかまわないで、エジプトに仕えさせてくれ』と言ったではないか。実際、この荒野で死ぬよりは、エジプトに仕えるほうがよかったのだ。」
The Israelites were cowards, hypocrites, rebels, and most of all, hopeless slaves. They completely forgot about the God’s amazing acts of salvation for them in Egypt. The tenth plague and the Passover were just a few days ago! They all saw the work of the LORD, and now they say: 12b For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.
イスラエルの民は、臆病者であり、偽善者であり、反逆者であり、そして何よりも、救いようのない奴隷根性に満ちていました。彼らは、エジプトで神が自分たちのために行われたあの素晴らしい救いの御業を、完全に忘れてしまったのです。第10の災いと過越の祭りは、ほんの数日前のことでした！彼らは皆、主の御業を見たというのに、今になってこう言っているのです。12b「この荒野で死ぬよりは、エジプトに仕えるほうがよかったのだ。」
Where is their faith? It’s pure evil and wickedness because Israel is now rebelling directly against God’s act of salvation; in other words, they were screaming to God, Why did you save us? Who said we wanted your salvation?
彼らの信仰はどこへ行ってしまったのでしょうか。これは純粋な悪であり不義です。なぜなら、イスラエルは今、神の救いの御業に対して正面から反逆しているからです。言い換えれば、彼らは神に向かってこう叫んでいたのです。「なぜ私たちを救ったのか？私たちがあなたの救いを望んでいると誰が言った？」と。
Here is my question for you: If you were God, would you forgive and save them again? Honestly, If I were God, I would throw them into the sea. But again, God showed them mercy and grace, which is absolutely mind-blowing. This is our God; he is gracious and forgiving (Psalm 103:10 He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities).
ここで皆さんに質問です。もしあなたが神だったら、彼らを再び赦し、救い出すでしょうか。正直なところ、もし私が神なら、彼らを海に投げ捨てているところです。しかし、神は再び彼らに慈しみと恵みを示されました。これは全くもって驚くべきことです。これこそが私たちの神であり、神は恵み深く、赦してくださる方なのです（詩篇103:10「私たちの罪にしたがって私たちを扱うことをせず私たちの咎にしたがって私たちに報いをされることもない。」）。
But sadly, this is just the beginning of Israel’s unfaithfulness—since this time, Israel has never been truly faithful to God; from here all the way to Malachi, the final book of the Old Testament, and even to the New Testament, Israel was always rebellious and disobedient to God.
しかし悲しいことに、これはイスラエルの不信仰の始まりにすぎませんでした。この時以来、イスラエルが神に対して真に忠実であったことは一度もありません。ここから旧約聖書の最後の書であるマラキ書、さらには新約聖書に至るまで、イスラエルは常に神に対して反抗的で不従順でした。
Commanded by God, Moses spoke to the unbelieving and rebellious Israelites: Do not fear! Stand by and see the salvation of the LORD which He will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will never see them again forever. The LORD will fight for you while you keep silent (14:13–14).
神の命により、モーセは不信仰で反逆的なイスラエルの民に告げました。「恐れてはならない。しっかり立って、今日あなたがたのために行われる主の救いを見なさい。あなたがたは、今日見ているエジプト人をもはや永久に見ることはない。主があなたがたのために戦われるのだ。あなたがたは、ただ黙っていなさい。」“（14:13–14）。
TEXT
And now we enter today’s passage; God worked an incredible miracle for Israel: When Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, 21 the Lord drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night. Although it was Moses who stretched out his hand over the sea, it was the LORD God who divided the waters and made the sea dry land!
そして今、私たちは本日の箇所へと入ります。神はイスラエルのために驚くべき奇跡を行われました。モーセが手を海の上に差し伸ばしたとき、21 主は一晩中、強い東風で海を押し戻し、海を乾いた地とされた。海の上に手を差し伸ばしたのはモーセでしたが、水を分けて海を乾いた地とされたのは、主なる神だったのです！
What is the sea? If you are Japanese, you know the sea. It is the largest body of water on Earth. When we stand on the seashore, what do we feel? We feel so small because the ocean is too vast. Even with all of today’s technology, we don’t fully understand the sea yet. There are still so many areas in the sea that remain unknown to us.
海とは何でしょうか。もし皆さんが日本人なら、海がどんなものか知っているでしょう。それは地球上で最大の水域です。私たちが海岸に立つとき、何を感じるでしょうか。海があまりにも広大であるため、自分がとても小さく感じられます。現代のあらゆるテクノロジーをもってしても、私たちはまだ海を完全には理解していません。海には、私たちにとって未知の領域が今なお数多く残されているのです。
And who is the maker of the sea? Genesis 1 says that God created the ocean; he gathered the water to one place and called the gathered waters “seas” (Gen 1:10); and God created everything in the sea (Gen 1:20–21); Psalm 95:5a says, “The sea is his, for he made it”; and Acts 4:24 says that our sovereign God “made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and everything in them.”
では、海の造り主は誰でしょうか。創世記1章には、神が海を創造されたと書かれています。神は水を一つの場所に集め、その集まった水を「海」と呼ばれました（創世記1:10）。そして神は海の中にあるすべてのものを創造されました（創世記1:20-21）。詩篇95篇5節（前半）には「海は主のもの。主がそれを造られた」とあり、使徒の働き4章24節には、主権者であられる私たちの神が「天と地と海、またそれらの中のすべてのものを造られた」とあります。
If God is the maker of the Red Sea, parting the sea shouldn’t be a problem to him. God caused a strong east wind all night and drove the sea back. Although Israelites were complaining to and rebelling against God, he graciously opened a path for them in the sea!
もし神が紅海の造り主であるならば、海を割ることなど神にとって何の問題でもありません。神は一晩中強い東の風を吹かせ、海を押し返されました。イスラエルの民は神に不平を言い、反逆していたにもかかわらず、神は恵みによって海の中に道を切り開いてくださったのです！
Behind them stood the Egyptian army, determined to attack and kill the Israelites. What should they do? Of course, 22a the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground. And when they were walking in the middle of the sea, the Bible is very clear that the waters became like “a wall to them on their right hand and on their left” (22b). I believe this. That’s why I cringe every time I hear that Korean phenomenon described as a “miracle of Moses.” No, it’s not even close.
彼らの背後には、イスラエル人を攻撃して殺そうと執念を燃やすエジプト軍が迫っていました。彼らはどうすべきだったでしょうか。当然、「22a イスラエルの子らは、海の真ん中の乾いた地面を進んで行った。」そして彼らが海の中を歩いていたとき、聖書はきわめて明確に、水が彼らのために「右も左も壁になった。」（22b）と記しています。私はこれを信じています。だからこそ、あの韓国の現象が「モーセの奇跡」と表現されるのを耳にするたびに、私は当惑してしまうのです。いいえ、そんなものとは似ても似つきません。
And Pharaoh’s and the Egyptian’s anger and disobedience blinded them all, and they did what they never should have done: The Egyptians pursued and went in after them into the midst of the sea, all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen (v. 23). And when the Egyptian forces were still in the middle of the sea, God threw the Egyptian forces into a panic (v. 24). And it was then that the Egyptians finally came to their senses and began to cry, “Let us flee from before Israel, for the Lord fights for them against the Egyptians” (v. 25). What they finally realized was that the LORD God was on Israel’s side. But it was too late. On both sides of them were the walls of the sea; they were trapped in the middle of the ocean.
そして、ファラオとエジプト人たちの怒りと不従順は彼らの目を完全に狂わせ、決して犯してはならない過ちを犯させました。エジプト人は追ってきて、ファラオの馬も戦車も騎兵も、みな彼らの後から海の中に入っていった（23節）のです。そして、エジプトの軍勢がまだ海の中ほどにいたとき、神はエジプトの軍勢を大混乱に陥れられました（24節）。その時になってようやくエジプト人は正気に戻り、「イスラエルの前から逃げよう。主が彼らのためにエジプトと戦っているのだ。」（25節）と叫び始めました。彼らがついに気づいたのは、主なる神がイスラエルの味方であるということでした。しかし、時すでに遅かったのです。彼らの両側には海の壁があり、彼らは海の中ほどに閉じ込められてしまいました。
Then what happened to Egypt? Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to its normal course . . . (and) the Lord threw the Egyptians into the midst of the sea; . . . of all the host of Pharaoh that had followed them into the sea, not one of them remained (vv. 27–28).
その後、エジプトはどうなったでしょうか。モーセが手を海の上に差し伸ばすと、海は元の状態に戻り、…主はエジプト人を海のただ中に投げ込まれた。…後を追って海に入ったファラオの全軍勢の戦車と騎兵をおおった。残った者は一人もいなかった。（27-28節）。
But what happened to the people of Israel—remember what were they like? Just a few hours ago, they rebelled against God; they complained to God who had rescued them from their slavery. So, this people of Israel, what happened to them? 29 But the people of Israel walked on dry ground through the sea, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. 30 Thus the Lord saved Israel that day from the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore.
では、イスラエルの民はどうなったでしょうか。彼らがどのような状態であったか覚えているでしょうか。ほんの数時間前、彼らは神に反逆し、奴隷の身から救い出してくださった神に不平を言っていたのです。では、このイスラエルの民はどうなったのでしょうか。29 イスラエルの子らは海の真ん中の乾いた地面を歩いて行った。水は彼らのために右も左も壁になっていた。30 こうして主は、その日、イスラエルをエジプト人の手から救われた。イスラエルは、エジプト人が海辺で死んでいるのを見た。
Now, how can we make sense of this “nonsense”? I mean, what was it that distinguished the destinies of the Israelites and the Egyptians? Why did the Lord save Israel and throw Egypt into the midst of the sea? Why were the Israelites alive and the Egyptians dead on the seashore?
さて、私たちはこの「理不尽な話」をどのように理解すればよいのでしょうか。つまり、イスラエル人とエジプト人の運命を分けたものは一体何だったのでしょうか。なぜ主はイスラエルを救い、エジプトを海の中に投げ込まれたのでしょうか。なぜイスラエル人は生き残り、エジプト人は海辺で死んでいたのでしょうか。
If you think Israel deserved God’s favor, you should think again and read Exod 14:10–12 again. No, they were not worthy of God’s gracious favor. And yet The Lord saved Israel that day from the hand of the Egyptians. And Israel saw the great power that the Lord used against the Egyptians, so the people feared the Lord, and they believed in the Lord and in his servant Moses (vv. 30–31).
もしイスラエルが神の恵みを受けるに値したと思うなら、もう一度よく考え、出エジプト記14章10-12節を読み直すべきです。いいえ、彼らは神の過分な恵みを受けるに値する者たちではありませんでした。それにもかかわらず、主はその日、イスラエルをエジプト人の手から救われたのです。そして、イスラエルは主がエジプト人に行われた大いなる御力を見た。それで民は主を恐れ、主とそのしもべモーセを信じた（30-31節）。
Because God is absolutely sovereign and gracious, “he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills” (Rom 9:18). So, it was God’s gracious will to have mercy on Israel. That’s the only reason that Israel was saved from Egypt. I said this last Sunday and two Sundays ago as well: Unless God shows you mercy, you cannot even begin to love him; unless God softens your heart, it will always harden and disobey him. That’s why Israel was saved: God showed them mercy just because God chose to do so.
神は絶対的な主権を持たれ、恵み深い方であるため、「ですから、神は人をみこころのままにあわれみ、またみこころのままに頑なにされるのです。」（ローマ9:18）のです。ですから、イスラエルを憐れむことは神の恵み深いみこころでした。それだけが、イスラエルがエジプトから救われた唯一の理由です。私は先週も、そして先々週もこのように話しました。神が憐れみを示してくださらなければ、私たちは神を愛することさえ始めることができません。神が私たちの心を和らげてくださらなければ、心は常に頑なになり、神に逆らうようになります。だからこそイスラエルは救われたのです。神がそうすることを選ばれたという、ただそれだけの理由で、神は彼らに憐れみを示されたのです。
APPLICATIONS
When You Feel Stuck, Trust God.
行き詰まりを感じるときは、神を信頼しなさい。
When the Israelites arrived at the Red Sea, they must have been happy and relieved. But all of a sudden, they realized they were being chased by the Egyptian forces and that they were stuck between them and the sea.
イスラエルの民が紅海に到着したとき、彼らはきっと喜び、安堵したに違いありません。しかし突然、彼らは自分たちがエジプト軍に追われており、彼らと海との間に挟まれて身動きが取れなくなっていることに気づいたのです。
And we know how they responded; they rebelled against God and complained to him. The mentality of the Israelites was a victim mindset—the so-called “I told you so” or “I knew it” mentality (e.g. “I told you we should stay in Egypt”; “I told you to leave me alone”; “I knew this would happen”; “I knew we would die in the desert,” etc.)
そして、彼らがどのように反応したかを私たちは知っています。彼らは神に反逆し、不平を言いました。イスラエルの民の心理は、被害者意識、いわゆる「それ見たことか」あるいは「やっぱりね」というマインドセットでした（例えば、「エジプトに留まるべきだと言ったじゃないか」、「放っておいてくれと言ったじゃないか」、「こうなることは分かっていた」、「荒野で死ぬことは分かっていた」などです）。
But it was part of God’s masterplan; he put the Israelites between the Egyptian army and the Red Sea because he wanted to reveal something amazing about himself to Israel and to Egypt. What did he want to demonstrate? That he is a God who can powerfully save his own people, even by parting the sea! Therefore, being stuck between the Egyptian army and the Red Sea was a blessing to Israel because they saw the amazing miracle of the parting of the Red Sea! Whenever I read “Israel saw the great power that the Lord used against the Egyptians, so the people feared the Lord, and they believed in the Lord and in his servant Moses” (v. 31), I am jealous of them.
しかし、それは神の壮大な計画（マスタープラン）の一部だったのです。神がエジプト軍と紅海の間にイスラエル人を置かれたのは、イスラエルとエジプトに対して、ご自身に関する素晴らしいことを明らかにしたかったからです。神は何を示そうとされたのでしょうか。それは、海を割ってまでも、ご自身の民を力強く救うことができる神であるということです！したがって、エジプト軍と紅海の間に挟まれて行き詰まったことは、イスラエルにとって祝福でした。なぜなら、彼らは紅海が割れるという驚くべき奇跡を目にしたからです！「イスラエルは、主がエジプトに行われた、この大いなる御力を見た。それで民は主を恐れ、主とそのしもべモーセを信じた。（31節）」という箇所を読むたびに、私は彼らが羨ましくなります。
This also teaches an important lesson about our lives as well because we too are stuck between the Egyptian forces and the Red Sea. Sometimes we feel stuck, as if all the doors are closed to us. For example, your health may be failing; your relationships in your workplace may be going nowhere; your family may seem to be falling apart; you may never stop worrying about money, etc. When we find ourselves in such hopeless situations, we may become bitter toward God and lose faith.
このことは、私たちの人生にとっても重要な教訓を教えてくれています。なぜなら、私たちもまた、エジプトの軍勢と紅海の間に立ち往生することがあるからです。時として私たちは、まるですべての扉が閉ざされてしまったかのように、行き詰まりを感じることがあります。例えば、健康を害しているかもしれません。職場の人間関係がにっちもさっちもいかなくなっているかもしれません。家族がバラバラになりそうに見えるかもしれません。お金の心配が頭から離れないかもしれません。そのような絶望的な状況に置かれたとき、私たちは神に対して頑なになり、信仰を失ってしまうことがあります。
But Exod 14 is teaching us that being stuck can also be a blessing to us. Why? Because, just as the Israelites did, we can experience God’s power as he rescues us from such a deadlock. He can either miraculously save us from that situation or give us strength so that we can endure that valley of darkness. Most of all, the Spirit of God will work powerfully within you, leading you to desire prayer. I think this is an even greater miracle than the parting of the sea. When we feel stuck, God invites us to the place of prayer; he makes us want to pray. And when we go to God in prayer, he hears, comforts, strengthens, and guides us. And when we pray, we realize that our troubles are not troubles before God and our sufferings are not sufferings before him. I think this is even more incredible than seeing the parting of the sea.
しかし出エジプト記14章は、行き詰まることもまた、私たちにとって祝福となり得ると教えているのです。なぜでしょうか。イスラエルの民がそうであったように、神がそのようなデッドロック（立ち往生）から私たちを救い出される際、私たちは神の御力を体験できるからです。神はその状況から奇跡的に私たちを救い出してくださるか、あるいは、その暗闇の谷を耐え抜くことができるように力を与えてくださいます。そして何よりも、神の御霊があなたの内で力強く働き、あなたを祈りへと向かわせてくださるのです。私は、これこそが海が割れることよりもさらに大きな奇跡であると思います。行き詰まりを感じるとき、神は私たちを祈りの場所へと招き、祈りたいという思いを起こさせてくださいます。そして、私たちが祈りをもって神のもとへ行くとき、神は聞き、慰め、強め、導いてくださるのです。私たちが祈るとき、私たちの悩みは神の前には悩みではなく、私たちの苦しみは神の前には苦しみではないということに気づかされます。これは、海が割れるのを見るよりもさらに素晴らしいことだと私は思います。
CLOSING
Do I truly believe that the parting of the Red Sea was a historical event? Yes, I do.
Do I believe that Exod 14 has lessons for today’s Christians? Yes, I do.
God saves his people and keeps them in his care no matter what—not because we deserve his mercy, but only because God is gracious and faithful. So, Do not fear! Stand by and see the salvation of the LORD which he will accomplish for you today.
私は、紅海の割れる現象が歴史的事実であったと本当に信じているでしょうか。はい、信じています。
私は、出エジプト記14章に現代のキリスト教徒への教訓が含まれていると信じているでしょうか。はい、信じています。
